The Bayi Glacier is located in Yeniugou Township, Qilian County, Haibei Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province, northwest China, on the southern slope of the southern mountain of the Qilian Mountains middle corridor. It is the source of the Heihe River Basin, the second largest inland river in my country. The glacier is an ice cap glacier developed on a gentle mountain top. According to glacier cataloging data, the Bayi Glacier is the largest glacier in the source area of the Heihe River mainstream.
The glaciers in the scenic area are like waterfalls hanging down from the mountains, which is very spectacular. If you just want to see the scenery or take pictures, you don’t need any special outdoor equipment. The scenery of the glaciers is slightly worse in summer, and the best season is September and October.

Bayi Glacier, also known as Xiaoshalong Glacier, is located in Yeniugou Township, Qilian County, Haibei, Qinghai Province. It is one of the sources of the Heihe River, the second largest inland river in China. Bayi Glacier is about 180 kilometers away from Qilian County. What is valuable is that many ordinary tourists have the opportunity to get close to the glacier by driving close to the glacier. The glacier is not polluted much. It is holy and crystal clear in the sun, like a hanging white waterfall, which is very beautiful. It is best to prepare a whole day to go to Bayi Glacier, and drive or charter a car to and from. One-third of the intersections are not very good, so it is recommended to find an experienced driver to drive. There are no shops near Bayi Glacier, and water and dry food must be prepared in advance.

Erga Highway is the only way to get to the Bayi Glacier, and the scenery along the way is breathtaking!
Scientific expedition to Bayi Glacier on August 29, 2018. Not open to the public.
The Bayi Glacier is closed, but it is beautiful on the way.
The road to the destination was blocked. I talked to the guard for a long time but he still wouldn't let me in. He said he would only let me in if the township head, bureau chief, or county head called him! I ran hundreds of kilometers and wasted most of the day. China-TravelNote doesn't even update.
It is super beautiful, with an altitude of about 4,700 meters. If you have the chance when you go to Qinghai, you must go there.
The glacier number of Bayi Glacier is 5Y425L2
Also known as the Little Sharon Glacier, elevation 4828

The car goes up
Here you can see towering iceberg structures like a wall and a house. Starting from Qilian County, head towards Yeniugou Township, along Erga Highway (S204), drive about 153 kilometers in front of the Heihe Bridge. There is a sign pointing to the Bayi Glacier Polar Experience Area. Currently, the road leading to the Bayi Glacier is a gravel road. On the way to the Bayi Glacier, you can see the beautiful scenery of the Qilian Mountains along the way.
We set out from Qilian at 4:00 in the morning and walked through Yeniugou Township. There is a private gas station in Yeniugou Township on the way. It is best to fill up the gas before entering. The guy at the gas station is very nice and gave us some advice on the road conditions. About 50 km into Yeniugou, there is a sign indicating the Bayi Glacier. Turn right and you will see the road. The first half is still asphalt road, and the second half up the mountain is gravel road. The road is still passable, but some roadbeds have collapsed and you have to walk on the side. There are also some roads blocked by earth piles and you have to detour. It is better to get a four-wheel drive car for stability. There are some big potholes on the road. The scenery is really spectacular. The whole journey took about 5 hours. Overall, it is still worth it.

The best time to travel to the Bayi Glacier is September and October, as the scenery is slightly worse in summer.
Continue forward in the direction of the sign for "Bayi Glacier Polar Experience Area" and begin to enter the 50-kilometer gravel road. It will be bumpy all the way. Students who are prone to motion sickness must pay attention and take motion sickness tablets in advance.
Against the backdrop of blue sky and white clouds, the vast white glacier hangs down from the snow-capped mountains like a waterfall, extending over the ridge and then being cut off, leaving behind a vertical wall with gullies. The glacier is covered with ice ridges, shining in the sunlight. The white ice ridges and yellow ice stains slowly spread out, making the sky even more blue and soft. The blue sky, light clouds, and the snowy world, at a glance, the world is vast.
Bayi Glacier is one of the easiest glaciers to walk on and the oldest glacier with the lowest altitude. It is definitely worth a visit.
The Bayi Glacier is a glacier about 2,200 meters long and 15 meters high. It is like a snow wall that appears out of nowhere, and in front of it is an open and flat grassland. The altitude here is about 4,600 meters, which is very high. Try not to do strenuous exercise. The scenic spots here are not fully developed, and the infrastructure is average, but I like this kind of beautiful scenery without human intervention! Natural and shocking.
Bayi Glacier is one of the important attractions of this National Day self-driving tour in Northwest China. We originally planned to go to Bayi Glacier from Qilian on October 3rd, but when we checked the weather forecast on the night of the 1st, we found that it would snow in Qilian on the 3rd, so we temporarily changed the plan to go directly from Zhangye to Bayi Glacier on the 2nd. In this way, we had to take a second-class highway with very poor road conditions - S213. From Zhangye to Sunan County, it was still a flat asphalt road. After Sunan County, it was a tragedy. It became a dirt road full of stones, and there were big potholes from time to time. Fortunately, the scenery along the way was still quite good, which made us feel that it was worth it even if it was broken!
The pure white of the ice and snow under the azure sky takes us away from the earth and into another surreal and beautiful ice and snow kingdom! Or maybe we have returned to the Ice Age tens of millions of years ago. At this moment, the world is silent, life is empty and ethereal...
Bayi Glacier currently does not charge admission. When we went there, private cars could drive all the way to the ice cap, but this year, self-driving vehicles are not allowed to drive up. You can only park 7 kilometers away from the ice cap and then hike up. So we caught up with the last good time. You know, hiking 14 kilometers at an altitude of 4,700 meters is tantamount to a life-and-death test for us!!!
A place you will definitely regret not going to. Although there are various restrictions and it is difficult to get there, when you stand in front of the glacier, you will understand that everything is worth it.
If you are a fan of American TV series, this is the perfect reproduction of the scenery of the Wall in "Game of Thrones".
In 2016, I was told that I needed to register with the Qilian County Tourism Bureau. In August 2017, the relevant procedures were gone, but the no-entry signboard had been erected, and the last 3 kilometers of the road to the glacier had been dug up, so I could only walk from the parking lot to the front of the glacier, and this section of the road was indeed a big challenge (4,700 meters above sea level). I don't know what it will be like in the future, so hurry up if you want to go.
From the Zhuoer Mountain Scenic Area in Qilian County, drive west and drive all the way uphill. You can drive up to 100 yards. It's very exciting! After passing the Wild Bull Valley, continue driving until you see the road sign to the Bayi Glacier. It's more than 100 kilometers. Go down the road and continue driving on the dirt road along the Heihe River (my college classmate's new car). There is no road for another 40 kilometers. The Bayi Glacier at 4,800 meters is here. The road is under construction. It is estimated that the scenic area will be built soon. Tickets will be collected! If you want to go, hurry up
At an altitude of 4,800 meters, it takes 2.8 kilometers to walk from the parking lot to the glacier. Even in August, you need to wear a jacket or even a thin down jacket. The air is thinner than that of Qinghai Lake. There is altitude sickness, dizziness and headaches. A few people are breathing oxygen, but the scenery is stunning. White clouds hang low in front of you, snow-capped mountains are continuous, and the glacier is like a huge roof that falls from the sky to your eyes. The world is so big that you feel as small as an ant. Supplement on October 4: Recently, many people have left messages asking about the road closure of the Bayi Glacier. We went there in early August and are not sure whether the road is closed now. If the road is closed, it is recommended not to risk going again, so as not to make a wasted trip and it is not safe. There must be another opportunity to go in the right season.
Can't go up. The road was deliberately dug up. Distance 50 kilometers
I happened to visit the Bayi Glacier on August 1, 2017. It was very meaningful. I set out from Qilian County in the morning. It was raining all the way and the weather was bad. I arrived at the Bayi Glacier parking lot at noon. It started snowing and it was very cold. I was about to give up because I still had to hike two kilometers. Later, I decided not to bring the bulky SLR camera bag, but only the necessary medicine, water, power bank and two Snickers. After hiking for an hour, the sky cleared up and the scenery was very beautiful. The ground was covered with snow, which was much more beautiful than no snow or thick snow. It was very shocking and worth going. The main purpose of my one-way trip to Qinghai and Gansu was to go to the Bayi Glacier. Although it was very tiring and hard, all the efforts were worth it.
The road is closed, and the four obstacles are blocking the way. I will miss the Bayi Glacier this time.
We set out from Qilian County on the afternoon of August 9. We were a bit pressed for time, so we drove very fast. The scenery on the road was picturesque, but unfortunately we couldn't stop. Half of the last 50 kilometers were paved with asphalt, but the last 20 kilometers of dirt roads were full of potholes, which was not easy to walk. The road was blocked by potholes more than 2 kilometers away from the Bayi Glacier, so we had to walk up. There were Tibetans on the side collecting parking fees. The altitude at the foot of the glacier was nearly 4,700 meters. Fortunately, there was no other altitude sickness except for some shortness of breath when walking up.
It is said that the scenic area is not open to the public at present in order to protect the glacier, but you can actually go there. There are guards about 7 kilometers outside the glacier. You are not allowed to drive in, but you can walk. There are local vehicles under the guise of inspections to solicit passengers. You can take a car to enter for 200 yuan round trip. People who have never seen a glacier will be shocked by its magnificence.
The 14-kilometer round trip hike is really not suitable for children (about 7 kilometers each way). They will really get altitude sickness! I must say it three times. You must prepare altitude sickness medicine in advance! You must prepare altitude sickness medicine in advance! You must prepare altitude sickness medicine in advance!
The Bayi Glacier was the most exciting part of the eight-day trip to the northwest. We drove from Zhangye to Qilian in the morning, and from Qilian to the glacier at noon, and then drove on the Erga Highway at full speed. The scenery along the way was beautiful, but it was a pity that we didn't stop to take pictures. I thought we were the only car, but when we arrived, we saw that many cars were parked, and then there were more cars coming. The weather changes quickly at high altitudes, sometimes it is sunny, and sometimes it snows. It is a good experience.
I went there in August, which is not the best season for viewing, but it was still very stunning and worth going!
It is spectacular and the road to the glacier is easy to walk on. But now cars cannot drive to the foot of the glacier. It feels like the road was dug by Tibetans, and then fenced off half an hour away from the Bayi Glacier to charge parking fees.
It's worth coming, it's very spectacular. We only reached a narrow ice wall under the huge ice sheet. It's more shocking than the Midui Glacier, and most importantly, it's within reach! No pass is required, and the road conditions are also very good. The car can drive to the front for now, but the last 2.5 kilometers need to be hiked (about 4600 meters above sea level, it's really bold to bring children here). The weather and altitude sickness are a test of one's character.
The scenery on the road should not be too beautiful, so bring one or two oxygen bottles and buy them on the spot.
On July 21, 2017, I visited the Bayi Glacier. It took at least 8 hours to go back and forth from Qilian County (reasonable speed + appropriate stops on the way). Starting this year, the Qilian Tourism Bureau no longer provides "training" for free, and nominally prohibits tourists from visiting the Bayi Glacier, so you don't have to go to the Tourism Bureau in vain. Erga Highway is very classic, with good scenery and good road conditions. There are many subsidence pits in the section away from the Heihe River. The first half of the scenic road is paved, and the second half is a rolled gravel road. The overall difficulty is not difficult. Unfortunately, it was foggy that day, with visibility less than 30 meters. Near the glacier, a parking lot was built, and there were also catering tents. Food, drinking water, oxygen cylinders, and oxygen pillows were available for sale, and the price was reasonable. In the last 2.5km, the road was blocked by artificial means (earth piles + deep pits), and vehicles could not pass and had to walk up, which was conducive to glacier protection and prevented some people from driving up and running around. However, tourists in poor physical condition may not be able to see the glacier. After all, hiking at an altitude of 4,700 is also a test. Near the glacier, the iPhone shows 4710 meters, in the thick fog, I came and I left. If you want to see the best scenery, don't come in summer_(:з」∠)_
Officials say it is closed, but you can go. Drive to the gate, pay 10 yuan for parking, and walk 1.5 kilometers to the bottom of the glacier.
On July 7, we were lucky enough to get up close to the Bayi Glacier. Only our family of three and four other people went up there in the morning. When you face it, you can only describe it in two words: "shocking".
The scenic area has prohibited any vehicles and individuals from entering since June 1, 2017. There are warning signs on the road, but no one is guarding it, so cars will go around the side. If there is no snow covering the road, you can drive all the way to the vicinity of the glacier. If it snows or hail, the car must be parked below and you can walk for a while to get to the bottom of the glacier. There is a row of snow peaks around the glacier. Going down the mountain, you will always walk towards the snow peaks. When you get to the front of the glacier, the glacier appears in front of you like a wall. The glacier is connected to the white clouds and blue sky, which is very shocking. Pay attention to safety when visiting, don't take wild roads, and don't walk far into the snow for taking pictures. Some places may be very deep. If you step on empty ground, the snow will reach the root of your thigh. It is recommended to bring instant noodles and hot water with you. There is no food along the way. There are no restaurants or shops to buy food.
To go to Bayi Glacier, you need to go to the local tourism bureau in advance to complete the formalities. There are checkpoints. You will see the Qilian Mountains on the way.
The scenery is great. It is one of the rare ice cap glaciers in our country. It looks exactly like the Wall of Despair in Game of Thrones. It is at a relatively high altitude of about 4,700 meters. There is snow all year round. When we went there in July in summer, there was still thigh-deep snow. It is best to bring your own crampons, otherwise you can't walk far and can't get to the front of the glacier. The Bayi Glacier is surrounded by snow-capped mountains and there are few tourists. It seems like a fairyland.
This is a temporary attraction. For people from the south, seeing the ice and snow will give them an inexplicable sense of excitement. It is so beautiful and really worth visiting.
The weather was great when we first arrived at the glacier, and we even saw two Tibetan antelopes on the road. Then a heavy snowstorm came, and it was a pity that we couldn't get close to the glacier. I will go again next time.
The scenery is very good. The snow is too thick for the car to drive in. I hiked for 5 hours and had a new experience. It is worth going. I hope everyone can protect the undeveloped places together. The glacier is spectacular, but it’s a pity that I couldn’t walk to the front.
Spectacular! Several dozen meters high, several miles long, the snow-white glacier looks like the northern wall. 180 kilometers from Qilian County (does it count as Zhangye? I'm a little confused), the 130-kilometer Erga Highway is in front, the scenery is very good. Turn at the 50-kilometer dirt road when you see the road sign, maybe it's almost repaired now. There is a row of snow peaks around the glacier, and you walk along the snow peaks when you go down the mountain. It's indescribable, it's so beautiful. You must go!!
Bayi Glacier, a destination not on the planned route. When you cross the Qilian Mountains and reach the foot of the glacier, you can see this towering white glacier up close. It never melts and connects with the white clouds. It is shocking! Spectacular! Bayi Glacier (39°01.00′N, 98°53.53′E, glacier number 5Y425L2), located in Qinghai Province, is also known as the Little Salon Glacier. It is located on the southern slope of the southern mountain in the middle corridor of the Qilian Mountains and is the source of the Heihe River Basin, the second largest inland river in my country. The snow on the Bayi Glacier never melts all year round. Even in midsummer, the ice is connected with the white clouds. The huge glacier stands silently between heaven and earth. After years of change, the New Year remains unchanged. Blue sky, clouds, ice and snow, and brown earth, there are only these three colors in sight. Everyone will be shocked by this incomparable spectacular scenery. Bayi Glacier is the lowest glacier in China, but it is also more than 4,800 meters.
It was perfect! Vast snow-capped mountains, super thick, super white snow, blue sky, white clouds, and no one. The lack of public toilets was a problem.
The Bayi Glacier is really nice. I took my clients there a few days ago. It was really beautiful. I won’t say more, just show you the pictures.
It's so beautiful, it's worth the trip. After many obstacles, I finally made the trip. It's so beautiful that I can't describe it in words. I will come again.
It takes three or four hours to drive from Qilian. The road is not as difficult as imagined. The scenery along the way is picturesque and more beautiful than other conventional routes. The Bayi Glacier is still relatively primitive. It is nearly 4,800 meters above sea level. I feel nauseous due to lack of oxygen after walking two steps. Even so, it is very enjoyable to sit quietly and look at the mountains in the distance.
It is a free scenic spot, especially spectacular, and it is best to go there at noon.
I went there on the summer solstice. The fog on the glacier was very beautiful. We were the only ones there, and it felt like we were in Antarctica.
It is really good, especially the scenery on the way to the Bayi Glacier is very stunning.
A very worthwhile attraction! Very stunning glacier!
There is no doubt that the Bayi Glacier is a masterpiece of nature.
We arrived at 11:00 am, and there were nearly ten cars parked in the small open space next to the post. We drove to the front with doubts, and the staff took my pass and told me that the Bayi Glacier might not be open today. We can wait on the side, but it is unknown whether it will be open or when it will be open. I was shocked, is this trip really so unlucky?
We also parked the car on the side, got out and wandered around, asking everyone about the situation. It turned out that due to the sudden drop in temperature and snow, the Bayi Glacier had been closed since yesterday afternoon, but the staff of the Tourism Bureau still did not stop processing passes and did not mention the closure of the mountain, which seemed to be more concerned with making money than working. One of the waiting tourists had been waiting at the Bayi Glacier since yesterday afternoon, spent a night in Yeniu Township, and rushed to the Bayi Glacier early in the morning and were still waiting. They came all the way from Beijing just to see the Bayi Glacier.
After half an hour of constant communication and negotiation, the staff also confirmed that the road conditions of Bayi Glacier were safe and passable and finally released us. Led by a modified Shepherd, everyone drove to Bayi Glacier in an orderly manner. (Of course, this is not the case. The process is very pornographic and violent, but how can I write it down as I am so upright~) In fact, the process of going up the mountain is still very dangerous. The winding mountain road is just a gravel road, without fences or protective measures, and some sections are steep. When we reached an altitude of about 4000m, the road began to accumulate snow. Our car was not a four-wheel drive, and we almost couldn't get up when we slipped when going uphill. Fortunately, we went up the mountain with more than ten cars. Knowing that there were people around, we didn't panic easily. Fatty quickly calmed down and we climbed up the glacier safely.
Friends who come in July should not encounter snow accumulation. However, after September, you should be prepared for snow on the roads and even mountain closures.
There was a fence about 30 meters away from the glacier. At first I thought it was to protect the environment. Later, when I was taking photos, I walked a little away from the main road and sank into the snow. The height of the snow was directly above my calf. The Bayi Glacier in October has already entered winter. The thickness of the snow cannot be measured with the naked eye. Everyone should pay attention to safety when visiting and do not take wild roads~
The moment we arrived, we were shocked by the glacier in front of us. Living in the south, we had never seen such a magnificent glacier scenery. We didn't care about the cold and just ran into the snow. Maybe because of the high altitude, the sky seemed particularly low, the blue sky, light clouds, white snow, a chaos.
We took the S213 from Zhangye Danxia and then took the Erga Highway to the Bayi Glacier. The S213 was a hellish road! We had to cross dozens of high-altitude mountains! We had to fight against altitude sickness, encounter gravel, cross ice gullies, get stuck in mud pits, and were almost trapped in the mountains thousands of meters high! Because 2/3 of the S213 road was dirt road, it took us six or seven hours to get out of that road. We drove an ordinary car, which really required driving skills and luck. But the Bayi Glacier was worth the risk. We were caught in a snowstorm that day, which was very thrilling. Also, now you can drive directly up the last section of the Erga Highway to the Bayi Glacier, the road is newly built.
The Bayi Glacier is so beautiful! After all, not everyone can go to a high-quality glacier with a professional expedition company, so it is especially rare to be able to drive to a place where ordinary people can experience the atmosphere of the glacier. Generally, you start from Qilian County and prepare for a full day of round trip.
We couldn’t go up to the Bayi Glacier because the mountain was closed, but we were satisfied on the way. Children from the south have never seen such a beautiful snow scene!
It was a wonderful feeling to be in close contact with the glacier for the first time. The road up the mountain is also very well built. If your physical condition allows, it is highly recommended!
The spectacular Bayi Glacier. The temperature on top is really cold. You must wear something thicker when you go up, otherwise you will not be able to hold on for a minute.
The Bayi Glacier is spectacular and beautiful, but the road is not easy to walk on. People who go there must wear down jackets. No tickets are required now, but you must fill out a form at the local hotel or tourism bureau.
Magnificent, clean, continental glaciers are simply different.
The ice cap glaciers developed on the top of the gentle mountain and the dirt roads for cooling down and climbing up the slopes are all worth seeing.
The altitude here is indeed very high, the temperature is very low, the scenery is very beautiful, the road has been repaired, part of it is paved and part of it is dirt road, but it is very flat. It is open to cars now, so you can go there.
The Bayi Glacier is quite spectacular. The glacier is beautiful against the blue sky and white clouds. It is best to eat some Rhodiola rosea before going to the glacier to prevent altitude sickness. It is best to wear hiking shoes or waterproof shoes. It is easy to sink into the shoes and get them wet. To go to the Bayi Glacier, you need to apply for an application form in Qilian one day in advance, which costs 100 yuan per car.
In fact, there are no public services. It is a purely natural, undeveloped tourist attraction with superb scenery.
The scenery along the Bayi Glacier is very beautiful. Come and have a look! If you are going there, please contact Mr. Ma at 1839776172.
Bayi Glacier, also known as Xiaoshalong Glacier, is located on the southern slope of Nanshan in the middle corridor of Qilian Mountain. It is the source of the Heihe River Basin, the second largest inland river in my country. The glacier is an ice cap glacier developed on the top of a gentle mountain. According to glacier cataloging data, Bayi Glacier is the largest glacier in the source area of the Heihe River mainstream, with a length of 2.2km and an area of 2.81km². The end of the glacier is 4520m above sea level and the highest point is 4828m above sea level. Here, the blue sky, white clouds and glaciers complement each other. It is an ice and snow world that makes people sigh, amazed and yearn for. The original goodness and natural ecological environment of the glacier are basically maintained.
It is said to be the only glacier that you can drive to the foot of the glacier. You can climb up the glacier. We didn't climb to the top, but only climbed about half of it, but it was worth it. There are some garbage thrown by tourists under the glacier. Each piece of garbage will form a pit on the ice. I picked up some as much as I could and threw it into the trash can, but the trash can was also very simple. I really doubt that the garbage will run out again. I hope everyone will pay attention to protecting the fragile natural environment while playing.
I went there on June 23, 2016. It is one of the few glaciers that can be driven up by cars. The scenery along the way is stunning.
There were only two of us going to the Bayi Glacier. Qinghai Guide International Travel Agency was very trustworthy and sent a Toyota Niutou off-road vehicle. The driver Xiaolin and the tour guide Xiaotan were very enthusiastic and explained the scenery along the way. The 180km journey took 3 hours to arrive. It was a rainy day when we went there. Looking at the direction of the Bayi Glacier, the top of the mountain was shrouded in fog and clouds. I was worried that I would not be able to see the glacier when I arrived at the destination. The off-road vehicle crawled in the fog and clouds, and suddenly broke through the fog and clouds. There was a clear sky in the distance. The tour guide said that we had arrived at the glacier. God has eyes, and we can see the glacier. The glacier is beautiful, but it is very worrying. The glacier is crying and is melting and collapsing. The melting of ice and snow has formed streams, ice springs, and small waterfalls. The tour guide said that more people came, and the ice wall was not as white as before, but turned black.
It was sunny when I first arrived, but it started snowing in July. Wearing a T-shirt on a snowy day is also super cool. It is said that in 15 years, for environmental reasons, it will be closed. If you can go, go earlier, the glacier will be reduced.
This place has not been officially opened yet, but the scenery along the way is really good,,,, very beautiful
Be careful when walking near the icy flakes. The snow is a bit loose. The snow is knee-deep when you step forward.
If you want to take photos of the sunrise and sunset at Bayi Glacier, you can bring your own tent and stay in the only small pavilion similar to the security pavilion. There are not many glaciers with such a large section and such a complete surface without charging admission.
Bayi Glacier (39°01.00′N, 98°53.53′E, glacier number 5Y425L2), also known as Xiaoshalong Glacier, is located on the southern slope of Nanshan in the middle corridor of Qilian Mountain. Bayi Glacier is an ice cap glacier developed on the top of a gentle mountain. It is the source of the Heihe River Basin, the second largest inland river in my country, and the largest glacier in the source area of the Heihe River mainstream. We saw the signpost and wanted to go in and take a look, but we drove away from Bayi Glacier along the signpost! Later, I checked on the Internet and found out that the road was not repaired and missed the path to the glacier. Starting from Qilian County, heading towards Yeniugou Township, along Erga Highway (S204), after driving about 153 kilometers, in front of the Heihe Bridge, there is a signpost for the Bayi Glacier Polar Experience Area pointing to Bayi Glacier. At present, the road leading to Bayi Glacier is gravel road. Qilian County is building a 33-kilometer scenic asphalt road.
It is still an off-road tourist attraction and will soon start charging admission. I really hope it will never charge admission, otherwise it will slowly disappear. It is such a beautiful place, this pure land has slowly been developed by people. If you want to go, go earlier, because you probably won’t be allowed to go under the glacier in the future.
There is no public transportation from Qilian County to the Bayi Glacier, so you can only charter a car. It takes about 4 hours from Qilian County to the destination. One-third of the road is very easy to walk on, and one-third is not so easy to walk on. An off-road vehicle with a high chassis is best. The scenery of the Qilian grassland along the way is very beautiful. Remember to bring snow covers when you go to the Bayi Glacier, otherwise your shoes will be soaked after walking around!
We chartered a car to get to the Bayi Glacier. This place is really worth visiting again! Next time I go there, I must go hiking.
It is about 200 kilometers away from Qilian County, and it takes about four hours to drive there. The road condition is good and cars can drive up there. It is a huge ice sheet that stretches for several kilometers and is the source of the Heihe River. Those who are capable can climb up, but I can't because it is too slippery. The altitude is about 4,500 meters, and the altitude reaction is not very strong. The scenery is extremely shocking, whether it is looking at the ice sheet or the surrounding Qilian Mountain snow peaks from a distance, it is spectacular. There is no charge. When I went there, the road was still under construction. I don't know if it has been repaired now.
