Dongguan Grand Mosque

The largest mosque in Qinghai Province, it has a magnificent architecture that combines Han, Tibetan and Islamic styles. The prayer hall in the middle is the largest building in the mosque.
Whenever there is a worship service here, the number of people is usually large and the scale is grand, but the scene is very pious and quiet, which is very shocking.
After night falls, green lights will be lit outside the mosque. The whole mosque is beautiful and magical. It is very nice to watch and take pictures outside the mosque.
Since this is a mosque, there are certain etiquette requirements. Please keep quiet and respect each other when visiting.

Dongguan Grand Mosque is the most famous mosque in Xining. We walked to it from Mojia Street in about ten minutes. No tickets are required here, you can go in directly, but you need to pay attention to the religious customs here and keep quiet. There will be special people in the mosque responsible for visiting and explaining the history and some doctrines of Islam. It is recommended to listen to them, which is much better than wandering around aimlessly.

The architectural style here always reminds me of Florence, probably because of the "big domes" and the large number of geometric patterns that make up the buildings, which exude a strong Islamic style. It happened to be a gathering time, so I watched a wave of Islamic rituals and asked the Muslims next to me for advice. I found out that they also have Abraham and Jesus. In other words, Islam is the Old Testament era of the Bible. Before Jesus, it is the same as Christianity~

Looking at this minaret, I always think of how magnificent this holy place must have been decades ago when there were no tall buildings around. Decades have passed, and people's lives have changed dramatically, but they still have a pious faith in their hearts. Every time they gather, they will gather in such a mosque that is no taller than the surrounding tall buildings, and continue to pray for thousands of years. Thinking of this, a feeling of reverence arises spontaneously.

Dongguan Grand Mosque occupies a small area and has a simple architectural layout. It is a place of worship for Muslims and a school where imams teach the Koran. There are two main places to visit. One is the exterior wall, which is built completely in the Arabic architectural style; the other is the chapel, which is obviously in the style of a Buddhist temple. Just looking at this building, you would think you are in a Buddhist temple. It not only reflects the architectural style of a Buddhist temple, but also has auspicious items such as a vase and a Dharma wheel given by the Panchen Lama on its roof.

It has been destroyed many times in history and has been rebuilt repeatedly. Today, this mosque is not only a holy place of worship for Islam, but also a famous tourist attraction in Xining City.

In a corner of the temple, there is a "Xining Dongguan Hui Nationality Folk Culture Museum". The gatehouse is decorated in a simple, elegant and ethnic style. The museum is not large and introduces the local customs of the Hui nationality with photos, texts and physical exhibits. There are free explanations.

Dongguan Mosque is one of the most magnificent mosques I have ever seen. It is also the first time I have seen Muslims praying devoutly on such a large scale. Dongguan Mosque is one of the most famous mosques in Northwest China. It is a must-visit place for tourists visiting Qinghai to learn about Islamic culture.

The Dongguan Mosque is so beautiful at night with its shining lights. I arrived in Xining by plane at 17:00 in the afternoon on the first day. The Dongguan Mosque I visited that night was so beautiful and spectacular. I was deeply attracted by the building in front of me and shocked from the bottom of my heart.

This mosque was first built during the Chenghua period of the Ming Dynasty (1465-1487). The existing buildings were rebuilt in later generations. It is one of the four major mosques in Northwest my country. The main gate of the mosque is an Islamic building with polygonal attics dozens of meters high on both sides. In the middle of the building, there are several golden words "Xining Dongguan Mosque". Across the hall is a Chinese classical style archway, which also has the words "Xining Dongguan Mosque". There is an empty courtyard at the back, and the rooms on both sides of the courtyard are for believers to live and recite scriptures. The Chinese palace-style building in the deepest part is a place for Muslims to worship. The temple is simple and quiet, in sharp contrast to the noisy downtown outside.

One of the four largest mosques in Northwest China. It is located in the urban area of Xining, with convenient transportation. It does not look very large. From the inside to the outside (that is, from the old building to the new expansion), the buildings are roughly in three styles: ancient, Western, and modern. It is worth seeing. There are free guides at regular intervals, which is helpful for tourists to understand Islamic culture. Friday is the Islamic day of worship, and there will be more believers in the mosque for worship. It is recommended that tourists avoid Fridays as much as possible to avoid mutual interference.

The Grand Mosque is very beautiful inside. It has different views. You can sit inside and read books, learn different characters and languages. It is also very large inside. You can play inside and enjoy the life there. There are also different foods to taste. The taste is very good, and the service is also very good. It is worth visiting. The Grand Mosque is located next to Dongguan Street, Dongcheng District, Xining City. It is a courtyard composed of several buildings. It takes about an hour to visit the entire temple. The current building here was built in 1913. Just standing outside the temple, you can see a magnificent Islamic-style round arched building. This is the gatehouse of the mosque. There are two minarets on both sides, which are also typical Islamic buildings. Walking into the interior are several Han-style palaces. There are also Tibetan Buddhist-style roofs on the top of the palace, which are very unique. After entering, you can visit various buildings. Tourists are not allowed to enter the prayer hall, but they can watch and take pictures from the door.

In addition, after nightfall, green lights will be lit outside the mosque. The entire mosque is beautiful and magical, and it is great for watching and taking pictures outside the mosque.

Although Xining has a strong Islamic flavor, it is easier for people to accept it. Starting from the train station and heading towards the famous Dongguan Grand Mosque, you will also pass by the Yudaiqiao Mosque on the way. The towering prayer tower has a unique flavor. Locals do not regard these mosques as places of interest, but as part of their lives. Behind the Dongguan Grand Mosque is a food street in the Islamic world, such as beef, mutton, and sweet mash, all with their own flavors.

I didn't come here when I was a child. Compared with the mosque in Lanzhou, non-religious people are not allowed to enter! It is not open to outsiders. The small streets behind the mosque are all Muslim shops, similar to the feeling of a vegetable market.

This spectacular and solemn Islamic building is the Dongguan Mosque, where hundreds of thousands of Muslims in Xining conduct religious activities. Dongguan Grand Mosque is the largest mosque in Qinghai Province and one of the four largest mosques in Northwest China.

Recommended visit time: 30 minutes

Ticket information: Free

Some of my companions are Buddhists and don’t go to the mosque, so they sent me alone to take two check-in photos.

Some travel notes mentioned that you cannot wear revealing clothes when entering the mosque, and women need to wear headscarves to enter. In fact, I went in smoothly without a headscarf, and no one stopped me. But I did not enter the main hall in the middle of the temple, maybe you need to wear a headscarf to enter the main hall.

There are free tours in the mosque, where you can learn about the history of the mosque, its architectural features, and some religious customs of Muslims.

In the square in front of the main Buddhist temple, we encountered an activity for explaining things to groups of tourists. A group of Han Chinese aunties and uncles followed the guide and loudly chanted the words used by Muslims when they prayed... emmmmm... How should I put it? It felt a bit strange. After all, the group of people who kowtowed and prayed for blessings from the gods and Buddhas when visiting Buddhist temples seemed to be Han Chinese of the same age as the aunties and uncles... This behavior was somewhat inexplicably contradictory and weird...

If you have religious beliefs, don't visit casually.

Free to visit, Chinese-style mosque. It was prayer time when I visited. The square in the mosque was full of "white caps", people of all ages. Tourists were quietly waiting for the prayer to end at the entrance. After the prayer, I briefly visited the square and the main hall. The main hall is not allowed to be visited. It is difficult to park nearby, you can find a paid parking lot. The parking fee in Xining is not high, 5 yuan/2 hours, and there is a discount for WeChat payment. It is very cost-effective, better than parking randomly and getting a ticket.

By Sleepwalking Fairy |

After entering, there is another door. I walked around and saw a small Hui "museum" inside, where I learned about some of the customs of the Hui people.

By Dimethicone Pentoxide |

We visited the nearby Dongguan Grand Mosque, a national protected unit that combines Chinese and Western elements. The outermost Arab-style building shell was added in recent years. It happened to be the time for Muslims to pray (one of the five commandments in the Koran, Muslims must pray five times a day). The Hui people took off their shoes and went into the main hall to pray. The small square that was crowded at the beginning suddenly became much emptier, just right for tourists to pose. Some tourists were very curious and stretched their necks on the steps outside the temple to take pictures of the praying people. There is a Hui Culture Exhibition Hall on the side. If you come by chance, there will be someone to give an explanation. However, now the people who give the explanations go into the main hall with the imam to pray. The exhibition hall is not big, and the exhibits are very detailed. You can visit it by yourself. The only thing missing is the explanation of Islamic culture. I mentioned it a little when I watched "Jerusalem for Three Thousand Years" before. I was looking forward to hearing the explanation of the top students who practice here.

Dongguan Grand Mosque is very friendly to women. You can visit freely. Just pay attention to your appearance and clothing. Don't wear too cool. Wrap yourself in a scarf and you will have an exotic look.

The vermilion pillars, the goose yellow gate, and the small white hats blend into one, creating a pleasing sight.

The sound of chanting scriptures can be heard from the quiet square, and no matter how noisy the tourists are, they will involuntarily fall silent here.

Dongguan Mosque is unique. The prayer hall is an ancient Chinese palace-style building with a vase donated by Labrang Monastery on the top. The wing buildings on the north and south sides are hip-and-gable style. The scripture barrels on the top of the two pavilions in front of the hall were donated by Ta'er Monastery. The five arches in the middle are Chinese-style built during the Republic of China period, and right in front is a Byzantine-style onion dome building. It is a fusion of multiple styles, elegant and generous, and can be said to be inclusive and accommodating.

Every day, staff members give free explanations about the history, style, and teachings of Islam of the Grand Mosque, which is very informative.

Dongguan Grand Mosque is the largest mosque in Qinghai Province and is also very famous in the entire northwest region. There are several small shops selling Qinghai specialties on the back street. When chatting with the shop owner, he said that during major festivals, Muslims from all over Xining come to Dongguan Grand Mosque to pray, and the crowds line up outside the mosque. On such days, no vehicles are allowed on the street, all to ensure that people can pray smoothly.

Dongguan Grand Mosque is open to tourists for free, and there are imams who explain Muslim culture for free. When we went there, the imam was wearing a long robe and a small white hat without a brim. He was talking about "Ramadan" to tourists. The wireless speaker worked well, and I could hear it clearly even if I was standing outside the crowd.

On cloudy days, there are some black birds whose names I cannot remember, hovering low over the solemn and majestic Grand Mosque.

TIPS: Ladies are not allowed to wear short skirts and off-shoulder tops when entering the mosque, which is also a kind of respect for Muslim culture.

Xining Dongguan Grand Mosque is a fusion of Han, Tibetan and Islamic architectural styles. It is large in scale and unique in style. The Muslims in the mosque, whether adults or children, are very pious when they stand up to worship and bow.

Our chartered driver told us that the worst food is in Mojia Street, and the authentic and delicious food is all in Dongguan Grand Mosque. Dongguan Grand Mosque is only a few bus stops away from Mojia Street, and it costs one yuan to take the bus. After entering, we found that the prayer hall was blocked and no one was allowed to enter.

The architecture of the mosque is very beautiful and suitable for taking photos, but if you want to visit inside, you need to buy a 25 yuan ticket. At night, the Dongguan Mosque is decorated with lighting projects, and the beauty becomes more and more intense, which is especially suitable for taking photos.

Dongguan Grand Mosque is a relatively large mosque in the northwest. There are guides inside who will explain in detail the culture of Islam, the daily life of Muslims, weddings and funerals, etc. It is still worth a visit and it is free. Because it is in the urban area, the supporting facilities are very good.

If you don’t visit the largest mosque in Xining to learn about its religious culture, it would be like going to Beijing without visiting the Forbidden City.

Dongguan Grand Mosque is located on Dongda Street in the center of Xining City. It is listed by the Chinese Islamic Association as the mosque with the largest number of worshippers in the country. During major Islamic festivals, tens of thousands of Muslims gather here, and there are two to three thousand people worshipping every week. Dongguan Grand Mosque is free to visit, and there will be imams in the mosque explaining Islamic culture for free. When we went there, we were fortunate to hear the legendary Internet celebrity's explanation, and his eloquence was so good that it was admirable!

The building is very beautiful. It appears light green during the day. At 21:31, when it is time for the Evening Prayer, music starts playing and many Muslims wearing white hats and robes gather in the hall.
