Datong Ancient City Wall

The ancient city wall of Datong is located in the central area of Datong City. The ancient city covers an area of 35,000 square meters and has a square outline. The existing city wall was built by Xu Da, a general of the Ming Dynasty, on the basis of the old cities of Wei, Tang, Liao, Tianjin and Yuan. The city wall is 14 meters high, 12 meters wide at the top, 18 meters wide at the bottom, and 7.2 kilometers in circumference. There are four main city gates, Heyang Gate in the east, Yongtai Gate in the south, Qingyuan Gate in the west, and Wuding Gate in the north. At the same time, there are a series of military facilities such as moats, suspension bridges, towers, arrow towers, moon towers, watchtowers, corner towers, and military control platforms. It is a relatively complete ancient building in my country. Wenfeng Tower is located in the eastern section of Nancheng District. It was built in the fourth year of Tianqi in the Ming Dynasty (1624 AD). The tower is 37 meters high and is an octagonal seven-story hollow brick tower.

We need to find the "real" Datong ancient city wall first. Because there is a "fake" ancient city wall, which is only one street away from the real one. I don't know which "genius" designed it. If you come here to play at night, it will really make people scratch their heads. The original plan of the "fake" one was to build a commercial center. Unfortunately, even the real one was left unfinished, not to mention the fake one.

Then we walked up the city wall, rented a four-wheeler, and rode around the city wall as the sun set. A six-seater four-wheeler costs 120 yuan, which is not cheap; it takes 75 minutes to go around the city wall. The city wall is not flat, and there are ups and downs, which is a lot of physical work. Datong was formerly known as Pingcheng and Yunzhong, and was renamed Datong in the Liao Dynasty. Historically, this was an ancient battlefield where the Han people in the Central Plains and the nomadic peoples outside the Great Wall fought for the world. The existing Datong City Wall was built in the fifth year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty (1372). General Xu Da was ordered to build a new city based on the old cities of Liao, Jin and Yuan. It is slightly square in shape, 1.8 kilometers long from east to west, 1.82 kilometers long from north to south, 7.24 kilometers in circumference, and 3.2*** square kilometers in area. There are sightseeing rickshaws that can be ridden by three people. You need to pay a deposit of 100 yuan first, and 60 yuan for 2 hours. However, the staff said that the time limit will not be very strict, and it doesn’t matter if you have an extra half an hour or so. However, it is very strenuous for us to ride for 2 hours. The car can be ridden on the entire ancient city wall without restrictions. The four city gates in the east, west, south and north can be returned to the other three gates except the north gate.

In the south of the western section of the ancient city wall, there is the Ancient City Wall Museum. The museum is built inside the ancient city wall. You need to walk down the stairs from the watchtower to the bottom of the wall to see the internal structure of the ancient city wall. If you pass by, you must go and see it~

According to the Records of Datong Prefecture in the 10th year of Zhengde in the Ming Dynasty (1515), in the 5th year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty (1372), General Xu Da built a new city on the basis of the old earthen cities of Tang, Liao and Jin. The original city had four gates: Heyang in the east, Yongtai in the south, Qingyuan in the west and Wuding in the north. There were urn cities outside the four gates. In 2008, Datong City fully implemented the historical and cultural revival and ancient city protection project, and the ancient city wall of Datong was restored again. At present, except for the 185-meter west wall, the rest of the city wall has been restored according to the regulations of Datong City in the Ming Dynasty and is open to tourists. The project was rigorously researched and well-founded, and an important and complete display system of the historical relics of the ancient city wall has been established.

There has always been a question about Datong’s ancient city wall: is it newly built or restored?

This brings us to its history.

The existing ancient city wall of Datong was built by General Xu Da in the fifth year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty on the basis of the city walls of the Northern Wei, Tang, Liao, Jin and Yuan dynasties.

Since the Xinhai Revolution, the city wall has suffered the baptism of countless wars. The blue bricks that originally wrapped the rammed earth walls have peeled off. The walls cannot withstand the erosion of wind and rain, and many sections have collapsed.

In 2008, the Datong Municipal Government decided to repair the Datong ancient city wall and re-covered the original rammed earth wall with blue bricks. The restoration of the ancient city wall was completed until the western city wall was closed in 2016.

This involves a topic that has always been controversial in the academic community: should historical relics be allowed to weather over time or should they undergo vigorous protective repairs?

I think this question can only be answered by time. Time will tell us whether the treatment of Datong city wall is a good idea.

But from the perspective of ordinary people in Datong, re-covering the city walls with blue bricks of the original specifications and restoring the previously broken city walls will allow the ancient city of Datong to regain its former glory as an important city during the Ming and Qing dynasties. This is undoubtedly a good way to protect the city wall relics and develop cultural values.

The ancient city wall of Datong can be traced back to the Liao, Jin and Yuan dynasties. Later, in the fifth year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty, General Xu Da was ordered to build a new city wall on the basis of the old one. The magnificent city wall we see today is built on the basis of the original city wall of the Ming Dynasty with "three-in-one soil" and covered with blue bricks.

In the sixth year of the Shunzhi reign of the Qing Dynasty, Jiang Ge, a general of the Ming Dynasty, surrendered to the Qing Dynasty and then rebelled. Dorgon led his army to attack Datong. After nine months of attack, they failed to capture the city. Later, due to the lack of ammunition and food in the city, Yang Zhenwei, a subordinate of Jiang Ge, surrendered to the enemy and rebelled, killing Jiang Ge and letting Dorgon into the city. After entering the city, in order to vent his anger, Dorgon ordered a "massacre" and cut five feet off the city wall. Since then, Datong City has suffered serious damage and has lost its former glory.

In 2008, Datong City fully implemented the historical and cultural revival and ancient city protection project, and 70% of the remaining ancient city walls were restored by brick cladding. The restored ancient city walls are magnificent, especially when night falls and the lights are on. The night view of the ancient city is particularly charming. The colorful lights make the ancient city walls and pavilions handsome and beautiful, and the majestic outlines more attractive.

It was already 7:30 pm when we returned to Datong City. The tour group disbanded at Datong No. 10 Middle School. It was dark, and the lights on the ancient city wall opposite were on. The four characters "天下大同" were clearly visible. In just two days, I got to know Datong for the first time. It is a majestic ancient city, an ancient city that has stood firm despite the vicissitudes of life. The ancient city wall we see now is a reconstruction of the Datong City Wall of the Ming Dynasty. The Datong City Wall is 7270.7 meters long and can be visited for free with an ID card. However, the wall is too long and it is not realistic to walk the whole way. You can take a sightseeing bus on the wall or rent a bicycle.

If your city does not have a city wall, it is recommended that you take a walk around it. If your city has this kind of square city wall, such as tourists in Xi'an, you can ignore it if you don't feel like strolling.

The sunset and night view of the ancient city are great, but the disadvantage is that the transportation is not very convenient. It would be better if shared bicycles could be provided in the ancient city.

You can rent bicycles on it, but adhering to my usual stingy principle, we just walked to the next exit. From the city wall, you can see the inside and outside of the ancient city, and the modern and historical are in full view. Although it is a city wall rebuilt by a certain mayor, it is still very meaningful. However, the night view inside and outside the city wall is indeed much better than during the day.

Datong Sliced Noodles is delicious, Fenglin Pavilion is really worth the money. The ancient city wall is very bright in the sunset. If I had stayed for one more day, it would have been better to take pictures of the city wall in the morning light.
