Datong Ancient City Wall

The history of Datong City is quite long. As early as when it was the capital of the Tuoba clan of the Northern Wei Dynasty, a large-scale city was built. In the early Ming Dynasty, as it was the shield of the capital, the military location was very dangerous. Therefore, in the fifth year of Hongwu (1372 AD), General Xu Da built on the basis of the old city, forming the Datong Town City that people see today. The final completed Datong Town City is roughly square. Although the Datong city wall is tall and solid, and the architecture is exquisite, it has been damaged due to wars, historical natural and human factors. However, as of the end of the 1980s, more than 70% of the complete adobe city was still preserved. After 2008, the original system and original technology were used to cover the adobe city wall with bricks when repairing the city wall, so that everyone can see the relatively complete form of the Datong city wall. The Datong city wall is not only majestic and spectacular during the day, but also can be appreciated from a distance or by climbing the city wall at night. The circular park under the city wall is full of greenery, birdsong and flowers. Stepping into it and reminiscing about the past and the present, it feels like a different world.

The ancient city wall of Datong is located in the central area of Datong City. The ancient city covers an area of 35,000 square meters and has a square outline. The existing city wall was built by Xu Da, a general of the Ming Dynasty, on the basis of the old cities of Wei, Tang, Liao, Tianjin and Yuan. The city wall is 14 meters high, 12 meters wide at the top, 18 meters wide at the bottom, and 7.2 kilometers in circumference. There are four main city gates, Heyang Gate in the east, Yongtai Gate in the south, Qingyuan Gate in the west, and Wuding Gate in the north. At the same time, there are a series of military facilities such as moats, suspension bridges, towers, arrow towers, moon towers, watchtowers, corner towers, and military control platforms. It is a relatively complete ancient building in my country. Wenfeng Tower is located in the eastern section of Nancheng District. It was built in the fourth year of Tianqi in the Ming Dynasty (1624 AD). The tower is 37 meters high and is an octagonal seven-story hollow brick tower.

We need to find the "real" Datong ancient city wall first. Because there is a "fake" ancient city wall, which is only one street away from the real one. I don't know which "genius" designed it. If you come here to play at night, it will really make people scratch their heads. The original plan of the "fake" one was to build a commercial center. Unfortunately, even the real one was left unfinished, not to mention the fake one.

Then we walked up the city wall, rented a four-wheeler, and rode around the city wall as the sun set. A six-seater four-wheeler costs 120 yuan, which is not cheap; it takes 75 minutes to go around the city wall. The city wall is not flat, and there are ups and downs, which is a lot of physical work. Everyone does it according to their ability.

Datong was formerly known as Pingcheng and Yunzhong, and was renamed Datong in the Liao Dynasty. Historically, this was an ancient battlefield where the Han people in the Central Plains and the nomadic peoples outside the Great Wall fought for the world. The special geographical location has created a history of war and ethnic integration in Datong that has lasted for thousands of years.

The existing Datong City Wall was built in the fifth year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty (1372). General Xu Da was ordered to build a new city based on the old cities of Liao, Jin and Yuan. It is slightly square in shape, 1.8 kilometers long from east to west, 1.82 kilometers long from north to south, 7.24 kilometers in circumference, and 3.2*** square kilometers in area. It is well-known throughout the country. The Datong City Wall is tall and solid, with exquisite architecture, but it has been damaged by wars, natural and man-made reasons in history. Very few of the walls are covered with bricks, but most of the rammed earth walls are well preserved.

Coming out of Shanhua Ancient Temple, opposite is the Yongtai Gate of Datong Ancient City, from here you can climb up the city wall. We rented a three-person bicycle here and rode for about 2 hours, and only visited the southwest part of the ancient city wall...

The ancient city wall is relatively well-repaired, and the city defense system is also well preserved. There are four city gates in the east, west, south and north. Each city gate has a barbican and a moon city. There are 62 gatehouses, corner towers and watchtowers on the city wall. Imagine how difficult it was to break through such a city in the past...

There are sightseeing rickshaws that can be ridden by three people. You need to pay a deposit of 100 yuan first, and 60 yuan for 2 hours. However, the staff said that the time limit will not be very strict, and it doesn’t matter if you have an extra half an hour or so. However, it is very strenuous for us to ride for 2 hours. The car can be ridden on the entire ancient city wall without restrictions. The four city gates in the east, west, south and north can be returned to the other three gates except the north gate.

In the south of the western section of the ancient city wall, there is the Ancient City Wall Museum. The museum is built inside the ancient city wall. You need to walk down the stairs from the watchtower to the bottom of the wall to see the internal structure of the ancient city wall. If you pass by, you must go and see it~

The rammed earth inside the ancient city wall of the Ming Dynasty is superimposed on the rammed earth of the Northern Wei, Liao and Jin Dynasties. It is easy to see the difference between the construction of different dynasties from the soil quality, soil color and ramming method...

According to the Records of Datong Prefecture in the 10th year of Zhengde in the Ming Dynasty (1515), in the 5th year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty (1372), General Xu Da built a new city on the basis of the old earthen cities of Tang, Liao and Jin. The plan is slightly square, 1.8 km long from east to west, 1.82 km long from north to south, 7.24 km in circumference and 3.28 km2 in area. The original city had four gates: Heyang in the east, Yongtai in the south, Qingyuan in the west and Wuding in the north. There were urn cities outside the four gates. The shape of the entire city is a rectangular city slightly longer from east to west. The city has gone through four eras: Northern Wei, Liao and Jin, Ming and Qing. The name of the city has changed repeatedly, and the layout and scale of the city have also changed due to political needs or military defense, but its location has not changed significantly, which is rare in the history of urban construction in my country. In 2008, Datong City fully implemented the historical and cultural revival and ancient city protection project, and the ancient city wall of Datong was restored again. At present, except for the 185-meter west wall, the rest of the city wall has been restored according to the regulations of Datong City in the Ming Dynasty and is open to tourists. The project was rigorously researched and well-founded, and an important and complete display system of the historical relics of the ancient city wall has been established.

There has always been a question about Datong’s ancient city wall: is it newly built or restored?

This brings us to its history.

The existing ancient city wall of Datong was built by General Xu Da in the fifth year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty on the basis of the city walls of the Northern Wei, Tang, Liao, Jin and Yuan dynasties.

Since the Xinhai Revolution, the city wall has suffered the baptism of countless wars. The blue bricks that originally wrapped the rammed earth walls have peeled off. The walls cannot withstand the erosion of wind and rain, and many sections have collapsed.

In 2008, the Datong Municipal Government decided to repair the Datong ancient city wall and re-covered the original rammed earth wall with blue bricks. The restoration of the ancient city wall was completed until the western city wall was closed in 2016.

This involves a topic that has always been controversial in the academic community: should historical relics be allowed to weather over time or should they undergo vigorous protective repairs?

I think this question can only be answered by time. Time will tell us whether the treatment of Datong city wall is a good idea.

But from the perspective of ordinary people in Datong, re-covering the city walls with blue bricks of the original specifications and restoring the previously broken city walls will allow the ancient city of Datong to regain its former glory as an important city during the Ming and Qing dynasties. This is undoubtedly a good way to protect the city wall relics and develop cultural values.

By Rise from Fire |

The ancient city wall of Datong can be traced back to the Liao, Jin and Yuan dynasties. Later, in the fifth year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty, General Xu Da was ordered to build a new city wall on the basis of the old one. The magnificent city wall we see today is built on the basis of the original city wall of the Ming Dynasty with "three-in-one soil" and covered with blue bricks.

In the sixth year of the Shunzhi reign of the Qing Dynasty, Jiang Ge, a general of the Ming Dynasty, surrendered to the Qing Dynasty and then rebelled. Dorgon led his army to attack Datong. After nine months of attack, they failed to capture the city. Later, due to the lack of ammunition and food in the city, Yang Zhenwei, a subordinate of Jiang Ge, surrendered to the enemy and rebelled, killing Jiang Ge and letting Dorgon into the city. After entering the city, in order to vent his anger, Dorgon ordered a "massacre" and cut five feet off the city wall. Since then, Datong City has suffered serious damage and has lost its former glory.

In 2008, Datong City fully implemented the historical and cultural revival and ancient city protection project, and 70% of the remaining ancient city walls were restored by brick cladding. The restored ancient city walls are magnificent, especially when night falls and the lights are on. The night view of the ancient city is particularly charming. The colorful lights make the ancient city walls and pavilions handsome and beautiful, and the majestic outlines more attractive.

It was already 7:30 pm when we returned to Datong City. The tour group disbanded at Datong No. 10 Middle School. It was dark, and the lights on the ancient city wall opposite were on. The four characters "天下大同" were clearly visible. In just two days, I got to know Datong for the first time. It is a majestic ancient city, an ancient city that has stood firm despite the vicissitudes of life. I selected a few photos of Datong and posted a message on WeChat Moments, about my thoughts at this moment: Xijing is the key to the capital, and it has forged a glorious chapter for thousands of years; the important town guarding the border plays the song of prosperity - this is my deepest feeling when I visited Datong on the 70th anniversary of the National Day.

After visiting Shanhua Temple, we climbed up the city wall of the ancient city. We walked around the city wall and took some interesting photos. We had a lot of fun.

By angelatxl1026 |

It should have been extensively repaired. Some parts are newly built, right? There are several other scenic spots in the ancient city. If you have time, you can go around. I only went to the mosque, a Chinese-style mosque.

Datong was the capital of the Northern Wei Dynasty and the secondary capital of the court during the Liao and Jin Dynasties. The ancient city was surrounded by high walls. However, since the walls were made of rammed earth, most of them were destroyed later. Since 2008, Datong City has fully implemented the historical and cultural revival and ancient city protection project, and 70% of the remaining ancient city walls have been repaired with bricks to reproduce the appearance of the ancient city of Datong.

The current Datong ancient city wall is square, 14 meters high, 12 meters wide at the top, 18 meters wide at the bottom, and 7.2 kilometers in circumference. There are four main city gates, the east gate is Heyang Gate, the south gate is Yongtai Gate, the west gate is Qingyuan Gate, and the north gate is Wuding Gate. There are towers on the four gates, with moon towers, arrow towers, watchtowers, and corner towers standing at intervals. Outside the four gates are urn cities, moon cities, and moats. A major feature of the city wall is that the outer contour is like a gear, the city piers are protruding, and the trapezoidal structure is a special shape for the defense of Datong city wall.

By A green plum |

The ancient city wall we see now is a reconstruction of the Datong City Wall of the Ming Dynasty. The Datong City Wall is 7270.7 meters long and can be visited for free with an ID card. However, the wall is too long and it is not realistic to walk the whole way. You can take a sightseeing bus on the wall or rent a bicycle.

By rrrock |

If your city does not have a city wall, it is recommended that you take a walk around it. If your city has this kind of square city wall, such as tourists in Xi'an, you can ignore it if you don't feel like strolling.

By CJ |

The sunset and night view of the ancient city are great, but the disadvantage is that the transportation is not very convenient. It would be better if shared bicycles could be provided in the ancient city.

By Sad Onion |

The whole family had a lot of fun riding bikes on the city wall, and there was no entrance fee~

The green belt around the ancient city wall of Datong City further beautifies the city wall.

Climbing the city wall at night, I felt like I was dreaming of returning to Yunzhong County. The night view is amazing

By Lavender_Young |

The ancient city wall is too new... There is nothing special about it. In addition, demolished buildings can be seen everywhere in Datong City. There is nothing to see on the ancient city wall. No entrance fee is charged, and you can enter with your ID card.

Although I know it is a retro attraction, it is built very imposingly ~ It is suitable for taking photos. The day I went there was May Day. There was a musical fountain in the square of the ancient city gate. It was the first time I saw a fountain spraying for an hour and it was not over yet. It must be so rich.

By The Wind in the Quiet Valley |

The ancient city wall of Datong is well maintained, and the several city gates and the moat look very imposing.

By Ice and Snow |

The city walls are basically newly built, but they are not yet completed, and the supporting facilities are still far from complete. Maybe it's because I just went to Xi'an not long ago, the difference between the two is too big. The only advantage is that there is no ticket.

By Mountain and sea view |

We really have to thank the great Communist Party and Mayor Geng for the planning for the restoration.

By China-TravelNote users |

The city wall is very majestic and tall. Although it is newly built, you can still vaguely see the ancient city wall style. The city wall is very wide, probably with two lanes wide, and you can rent bicycles on it. It is worth a visit.

By NBA |

In late April 2013, we drove to Datong in Shanxi. At that time, the city wall was undergoing large-scale renovation and had begun to take shape. The city wall was tall and solid, and the architecture was exquisite. Although it was newly built, it was still possible to see that the city wall of Datong, as the capital of the Northern Wei Dynasty, was magnificent and domineering.

By China-TravelNote users |

It is said that the ancient city wall of Datong was restored later, but when you arrive in Datong, looking from afar, the city wall of Datong is still very domineering and spectacular.

Especially the night view is very beautiful. Worth a visit.

In the afternoon, we returned to Datong City and took a walk inside the city wall. I had prepared the money, but I didn't expect that it was free to visit. It is very big, several miles long, but the scenery is basically the same. It is suitable for friends to take a walk or take a walk when they are bored.

By An ordinary boat |

The city wall is very good and open to the public for free. The night view is especially beautiful. It is really pleasant to walk around after dinner. However, you must be mentally prepared before walking. The distance is still quite long, so you must plan in advance how to walk, which gate to go up and which gate to go down.

By 王倆吉 |

Not bad. I went there in May 2017. There were fewer people. The entire city wall was still under repair and there was not much commercialization. Although it is not as good as the Xi'an City Wall, it is also very distinctive. I recommend going there in the evening to watch the sunset.

By Youth never ends |

It’s my first time walking in such a long ancient city. The whole journey is about 7.5 kilometers. You can rent bicycles and ride on the city wall. I walked 30,000 steps. The night view is beautiful. Sign in.

In the evening, there are not many tourists visiting here, only two or three, which makes people feel mysterious and empty.

By Wuyuan Peaceful Residence |

By A Hao can't get fat |

The ancient city wall of Datong has a long history, but the existing city wall was newly built in recent years because the old one has been in disrepair for a long time and really needs maintenance and renovation.

By Yoyo |

The ancient city wall rebuilt in Datong is really recommended to everyone. The 9-kilometer city wall can be cycled and played. The night view is especially beautiful.

By Wandering Potatoes |

After I climbed up the city wall and walked from the South Gate to the middle, the sky gradually cleared up, just like a magic trick. The clouds and fog disappeared in an instant, and the blue sky and white clouds were in sight. With the setting sun as a backdrop, the entire city wall became extraordinarily beautiful. All the photos I took of the city wall did not need to be retouched. I walked like this until the sun went down and was still reluctant to get off the city wall. I walked all the way from the South Gate to the East Gate.

By Koan |

You can visit it during the day or at night, and the tickets are free. You can rent a bike and ride around the city wall during the day, which is very fun. If you have time, I suggest you go there at night. The night view of Datong is beautiful, with brilliant lights, numerous temples, and tower shadows, as if you have traveled back to ancient times.

Originally, only the rammed earth wall remained of the ancient city wall of Datong, and a small section of the rammed earth wall is still preserved. The current city wall was rebuilt on the original site, and the city wall is magnificent, especially the south gate's urn city is extremely wide. You can rent a multi-person bicycle on the city wall to ride around the city. It takes about 2 to 3 hours to walk around the city. I went upstairs in the early morning, afternoon and evening. Some sections of the building were almost empty. The key point is that it is still free! Free! Free! Good things are said three times! ! !

By Nine Realms - Walker |

The ancient city wall is really nice. My family and I rode around it for less than 90 minutes (walked 3/4 of the way). The night view is beautiful.

By Phoebe xiagang |

The city wall is super wide and you can ride a bicycle, which is very interesting. The four city gates and corner towers are very distinctive. I like the city wall and look at it carefully.

By Impression of the site |

My impression of Datong is that the sky is gray and black dust is floating everywhere. This time, I came here and was amazed. The blue sky and white clouds, fresh air, and the majestic ancient city wall added more color to Datong!

By Du, Tanhua |

The night is slightly cool. It feels like entering the era of cold weapons.

By alan chan |

I have seen many city walls, but I have only seen the complete city walls in Xi'an and Datong. The city wall in Xi'an is magnificent, and although Datong is smaller, it has distinct characteristics and personality. I climbed the city wall at 7:30 in the evening. The weather was cool, and walking along the wide city wall was very free and easy.

By Jin Dabao |

The city wall was advocated by a very courageous mayor to rebuild. It has indeed improved the urban scenery of Datong and added to the charm of the ancient city. In the past two years, the advertisements of Datong Blue have been spread farther and farther. However, the city wall is still in a mess, various projects are still under construction, and there are still many bungalows that have not been demolished. The layout of the city is not perfect, and it is far less prosperous and lively than the built-up area outside the southern city wall. I am not sure whether the city wall is open for sightseeing, mainly because I really didn’t see any tourists on the city wall. It is said on the Internet that it is open, but we have not found the entrance until we rode from the west to the north and finally found the entrance to the city wall. It is free to visit with an ID card, and it is particularly hot on the high city wall. The city wall is nearly 10 kilometers in one circle, and it is unrealistic to walk. You can rent bicycles on it, but adhering to my usual stingy principle, we just walked to the next exit. From the city wall, you can see the inside and outside of the ancient city, and the modern and historical are in full view. Although it is a city wall rebuilt by a certain mayor, it is still very meaningful. However, the night view inside and outside the city wall is indeed much better than during the day.

Datong Sliced Noodles is delicious, Fenglin Pavilion is really worth the money. The ancient city wall is very bright in the sunset. If I had stayed for one more day, it would have been better to take pictures of the city wall in the morning light.

By Let your steps think |

The ancient city is relatively small and commercialized, and many buildings are later-built to imitate ancient styles. The city walls are well-preserved and can be visited from the top. There is also the local "Little Wife's Jelly" which is not much except that it is slippery and spicy, but it is expensive and the portion is small!

By Little mud painting travel |

After entering the ancient city, antique buildings come into view one by one. If I had not been to Datong, I would have thought they were old buildings left over from the Liao and Jin dynasties. The exquisite construction does not feel out of place in this ancient city.

Climb up the city wall and look out to imagine the bloody battles hundreds of years ago, which will make your blood boil. From the city wall, you can have a good look at the ancient city of Datong, and you can also understand the structure of the ancient city wall, which is the wisdom of the ancient people's defensive fortifications.

The free city wall allows you to walk on it for a whole day. It is larger than many other city walls. If I were from Datong, I would definitely walk on it sooner or later. Although it is free, you must bring your ID card with you. You can only go up with your ID card to get a ticket.

As early as when it was the capital of the Tuoba clan of the Northern Wei Dynasty, a large-scale city had been built. In the early Ming Dynasty, as it was the defensive vassal of the capital, the military location was very dangerous. Therefore, in the fifth year of Hongwu (1372 AD), General Xu Da built on the basis of the old city, forming the Datong Town City that people see today. The final completed Datong Town City is roughly square. Although the Datong city wall is tall and solid, and the architecture is exquisite, it has been greatly damaged due to wars, historical natural and man-made reasons. Very few of the existing city walls are well preserved, and most of them are only ruins. There are four sections of the city wall that are well preserved: the four corners of the city wall, and the northeast corner is the best preserved section in the city.

The ancient city walls are now newly built, but you can still climb up the walls to get a panoramic view of Datong. It is also nice to climb the city tower at night to see the night view.

By Melon-cutting customer |

The city wall is free and you can walk on it for a whole day. On the day I walked on the wall, I walked until dark, and the moon came out. The lights on the towers on the wall were lit up, which was a beautiful sight. Datong is a very leisurely city with good air. When I went there, the train was hung with small Datong blue flags.

The antique building is very imposing, but the protruding modern drainage pipes and high-rise buildings on both sides destroy its beauty and make it look out of place.

The history of Datong City is quite long. As early as when it was the capital of the Northern Wei Dynasty, a large-scale city was built. In the early Ming Dynasty, as it was the frontier of the capital, the military location was very dangerous. Therefore, in the fifth year of Hongwu (1372 AD), General Xu Da built on the basis of the old city, forming the Datong Town City that people see today.

The Datong Ancient City Wall is a modern imitation of an antique building. The remaining real ancient city wall is wrapped inside it, and the building feels very similar to the ancient city wall of Xi'an.

The Datong City Wall was built by General Xu Da of the Ming Dynasty in the fifth year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty on the basis of the old cities of the Han, Wei, Tang, Liao, Jin and Yuan dynasties. There are four main city gates, namely Heyang, Yongtai, Qingyuan and Wuding, as well as a series of military facilities such as moats, suspension bridges, city towers, arrow towers, moon towers, Qianlou watchtowers, corner towers and military control platforms. However, they were basically destroyed after the founding of the People's Republic of China. Liang Sicheng's surveying and mapping data of the Datong City Tower are complete, the photos and documents are detailed, and the foundation stones of the city wall and the brick walls of the horse face foundation are all preserved, which provides a detailed basis for restoration. Therefore, after Bogo arrived in Datong in 2008, he carried out large-scale restoration to ensure the authenticity of the building. The urn city, moon city, city gate tower, etc. are very distinctive and worth seeing.

Visiting time: Spring and autumn: 6:00-24:00

Tickets: Free but not free of charge. You can exchange your ID card for a ticket to enter the city, but there is still a fee for riding a bike on the city wall.

This is an important achievement of the controversial mayor. For tourists from other places who did not bear the cost of relocation, this project is quite good. The landscape is good and it effectively distinguishes the old city as a tourist attraction from the new city as a support for future development.

As a Datong native, I am proud of Datong Ancient City. On a sunny day, a few friends go up to the city wall, or take a bicycle or electric car to take a tour of the ancient city. It is so happy to enjoy the natural scenery while commenting on the changes inside and outside the city wall. The most important thing is that no matter who you are or where you come from, you can visit for free with your ID card.

The width is similar to the Xi'an City Wall, but it's completely free! There are also sightseeing buses and rental bicycles.

The Key to the North

The circumference of the ancient city wall of Datong is 7270.7 meters, and the shape of the city is square. There are 54 watchtowers, 96 shelters, and 580 pairs of battlements representing the villages under the jurisdiction of the time. Corner towers are built at the four corners, each controlling a military platform.

The existing city wall is a relatively complete ancient city wall building that was built by Xu Da, a great general of the Ming Dynasty, in the fifth year of the Hongwu reign of the Ming Dynasty on the basis of the old cities of the Han, Wei, Tang, Liao, Jin and Yuan dynasties.

There are four city gates: Heyang in the east, Yongtai in the south, Qingyuan in the west, and Wuding in the north. Above the four gates, there are moon towers, arrow towers, watchtowers, and corner towers. Outside the four gates, there are urn cities, moon cities, and moats.

The ancient city wall of Datong is tall and solid, with exquisite architecture, steep and majestic, tight defense, complete facilities and a self-contained structure. It is a distinctive important city in the history of ancient Chinese military architecture.

In 2008, the protection of the ancient city began, and the east and south city walls have been restored in accordance with the regulations of Datong City in the Ming Dynasty. The lights are on, the lights are colorful, showing the charming charm of the ancient city walls.

The construction of the strip parks along the west and north city wall moats is nearing completion. Strolling along the moat, the city wall, moat and strip parks complement each other, and you can enjoy the autumn colors of the ancient city and the new look of the thousand-year-old capital.
