The city wall is an important military fortification in ancient China. Pingyao City Wall has a long history and is well preserved. It is said that it was first built during the reign of King Xuan of the Western Zhou Dynasty, Ji Jing, and has a history of more than 2,700 years. At that time, the city wall was particularly low.

For the needs of military defense, in the third year of Hongwu (1370 AD), the wall was rebuilt and expanded on the basis of the old one, and the whole wall was covered with bricks. Later, Jingtai, Zhengde, Jiajing, Longqing and Wanli dynasties carried out ten repairs and renovations, updated the towers and added enemy towers. In the 43rd year of Kangxi (1703 AD), the emperor passed through Pingyao on his western tour, so four large towers were built to make the city more spectacular. During the more than 500 years of the Ming and Qing dynasties, there were 26 repairs and reconstructions, so the city wall style of the Ming and Qing dynasties has been maintained to this day. The total circumference of Pingyao City Wall is 6,163 meters, and the wall is about 12 meters high, dividing the Pingyao County with an area of about 2.25 square kilometers into two worlds with very different styles.

The existing Pingyao City Wall is one of the three intact county city walls in my country. It is the largest and most complete of the three cities. There are six gates around the city, one in the north and south, two in the east and west, and there are urn cities outside the six gates.

On some sections of the sidewalk on the city wall, the floor tiles are engraved with a unified font: "Pingyao Ancient City Brick", which looks very classical! A horse road was built on the inside of the city wall. The outer wall of the city wall is divided into sections and built with 71 battlements, each with a watchtower, wooden boards in the middle and arrow holes on the outside. The wall has a parapet 0.6 meters high and a battlement 2 meters high.

The urn city, also called the moon city, is built outside the city gate to enhance the city's defense capabilities. The urn city gates and the main city gates of Pingyao Ancient City are mostly at a 90° angle (except for the South Gate and the Lower East Gate). Even if the enemy breaks through the urn city gates, there is still the main city gate for defense. Since the space inside the urn city is narrow, it is not easy to launch a large-scale attack, which slows down the enemy's attack speed. The defenders on the top of the city wall can shoot from all directions from a high position, giving the enemy a fatal blow, just like catching a turtle in a jar.

After breakfast, we started shopping. Unfortunately, the weather was not good, it was cloudy, but it was more in line with the temperament of the ancient northern city in the Qing Dynasty.

The 6-kilometer-long ancient city wall is currently under repair. The only accessible section is less than 1 kilometer. If you want to take a panoramic view, you must go up the city wall to get a good view.

When you reach the corner tower, you have reached the east end of the city wall. There is a corner tower at each corner of the city wall to make up for the weak defense link at the corner of the city wall. The northeast corner tower is named "Qiyue Tower", the southeast corner tower is named "Ningxiu Tower", the southwest corner tower is named "Ruiai Tower", and the northwest corner tower is named "Xiadie Tower". It took two hours. The west gate section was under renovation, so tourists were concentrated on the road from the north gate to the east gate to the south gate. The east gate was the midpoint, and some tourists were stranded in a dilemma. The strong wind and yellow sand in the morning will probably be unforgettable for many people.

From the south gate of the ancient city wall, you can see the barbican. On both sides of the city wall are the old city and the new city. Time and space converge here. The width of the city wall is only 1/2 of that of Xi'an, but you can still walk around and take a look.

So if you want to walk on the city wall, you must be prepared. There are only four main gates to go up and down. But after passing the tower and the city wall, I didn't meet anyone, so it was suitable for taking pictures~

Pingyao in Shanxi is one of the only two ancient cities in China that have been successfully nominated as a World Cultural Heritage site. In ancient times, there were no large construction machinery such as excavators, bulldozers and cranes. Construction could only rely on people digging and carrying on their shoulders. Building this city wall was a huge project that required no money and effort.



In ancient times, when soldiers defended the city, they had to shoot or throw stones through the small windows of the enemy towers, corner towers and battlements to prevent the enemy from attacking with bows and arrows and earth cannons. However, once the enemy rushed to the outside of the city wall, it would be impossible to see and shoot the enemy, so a "blind spot" was formed here. To solve this fatal weakness of military facilities, the ancients extended a part of the city wall outward at a certain distance, and its appearance looked like a long face of a horse, so it was called "horse face".



The horse face of Pingyao Ancient City Wall has three functions: First, it strengthens the city wall. The common "corrugated paper" and "rebar" are typical objects that use the regular thickening of parts to achieve the same function of thickening the whole. Second, because the enemy tower built on the city wall is located outside the main city wall, the enemy in the "blind spot" outside the city wall can be seen clearly. After the enemy tower is moved outward, space is created for the limited main passage on the top of the city wall, which is convenient for the smooth passage of soldiers and chariots.



On the roof of the building we live in, different amounts of rainwater are generated every time it rains or snows and needs to be discharged in time, so downpipes are hung on the walls in front and behind the building. The purpose is to prevent rainwater from soaking the walls during the drainage process. Once the walls are soaked and wet, they will not only be damaged and their lifespan will be shortened, but they will also penetrate into the inside and cause secondary damage.



Let's look at the ancient city wall. In order to make the outer wall straighter and stronger and less vulnerable to digging, a layer of brick wall was built on the outer surface of the earthen wall. The way rainwater is discharged from the top of the city wall is also completely different from that of the building. In order to leave no traces of climbing and stepping on the outer wall, no drainage facilities are built on the outer wall, and only the accumulated water on the top is allowed to drain inward. However, the inner wall of the city wall is an exposed earthen wall, which cannot withstand the erosion of rainwater, so a water channel is built with bricks at each water outlet. A closer look will reveal that the water channel is not built with flat bricks, but in a flat plate structure. This allows the water to reduce pressure step by step and slow down the flow rate of water, thereby greatly reducing the erosion and damage of the foundation of the city wall by falling water, and plays a role in protecting the city wall.

A walk on the city wall is definitely the best place to relax after dinner!

If you want to go, go early. They will drive you down at a certain time. If you go down late, they will lock you up and you can only sleep on the city wall at night. This is unreasonable! In short, they only care about collecting money. A common problem in tourist attractions!

2017.7.23 Liangzi and I visited the Pingyao Ancient City Wall. It was well maintained and the spectacular wall was full of history. Unfortunately, the service and management were poor.

Judging from the fact that you can constantly meet foreigners, this is a famous place. There are many tourists, and the night view is a shopping scene. You are facing businesses. The ancient city is similar, just a list of shops. It is big, but it takes a long time to turn around. I feel like vomiting after turning around. I am tired of the aesthetics. You must buy a combined ticket. 130 yuan. There are a lot of fake beef, vinegar, and lacquerware inside, all of which are full of counterfeit and shoddy products. Personally, I feel that many lacquerware boxes are like something to hold foam and broken bones, haha. Don't buy blindly if you don't understand. There are a lot of vinegar, but no matter the price and quality, it must be the same as vinegar, either vinegar is diluted with water, or water is diluted with vinegar, so it is not recommended to buy. Go to regular supermarkets, which are available all over the country. The food inside is more expensive. The beef inside is even more expensive, and the taste is too general, so it is even more not recommended to buy. The ancestral tofu brain inside is just a paste, it is so unpalatable, it seems that the ancestors were also stupid. Noodles... definitely not as good as what most people make at home. Maybe I didn't eat the authentic ones, but from the noodle places I specifically found, they all want to make money and fool tourists - this is the case in Taiyuan, and even worse in Pingyao. I don't want to say more. The scenery is generally good, the ticket price is high, and the quality of the merchants is average. The main complaint is the Pingyao Ancient City Lion Head Restaurant (a designated spot for battery shuttle buses). The boss lady recommends high-priced and low-quality things - beef, the authentic one in my store, a 20-year-old store... Everyone would think that her family would make a fine beef. 58 a plate, a few slices, the same as outside. I dug deeper and questioned her, and she said, what I just said, didn't I say it was made by my family! Nonsense, take photos and complain! If any tourists see the comments, don't go there in the future, and let your relatives and friends who go there avoid this crappy store.

Pingyao Ancient City is one of the most complete old city districts in China, so its old city wall is a real antique, worth a closer look! In addition, when you come out of the West Gate, you can buy Pingyao Guanyun beef in a nearby supermarket, which is cheaper than outside!

On the first day on the city wall, I walked from the South Gate to the West Gate. There were not many people along the way.
