Pingyao Ancient City Wall

The city wall is square in shape, and the southern wall is slightly winding because it is built along the river.
It has maintained the shape and structure of the early Ming Dynasty and is the best-preserved county wall in China.
Two carriages can run side by side on the city wall, and there are also facilities to defend against enemies.
There was originally a corner tower at each of the four corners, but the current city gate corner towers no longer exist.

When you look at it from the outside, you can already feel its solidity and winding. After years of baptism, it is somewhat damaged but still able to stand firmly here to guard the entire ancient city. It is very admirable. It is one of the buildings with the most obvious historical imprint of Pingyao Ancient City. When you climb the city wall and feel it step by step, you will definitely feel its mottled and difficult. The 6,000-meter city wall, countless blue bricks with a century-old history, and some cracks in the wall have not affected its charm at all. It is always there, witnessing every ebb and flow of Pingyao Ancient City. It protects this thousand-year-old city full of ancient charm. Take care of it, remember it, and walk into it.

Pingyao Ancient City is located in Pingyao County in central Shanxi Province. It was built during the reign of King Xuan of the Western Zhou Dynasty (827 BC-782 BC).

Pingyao in Shanxi is known as one of the "four best-preserved ancient cities" and is one of only two ancient cities in China that have successfully applied for World Cultural Heritage status as a whole.

In 2009, Pingyao Ancient City was rated as the most complete ancient county town in China by the World Records Association. On July 13, 2015, Pingyao Ancient City became a national 5A tourist attraction.

The city wall is an important military fortification in ancient China. Pingyao City Wall has a long history and is well preserved. It is said that it was first built during the reign of King Xuan of the Western Zhou Dynasty, Ji Jing, and has a history of more than 2,700 years. At that time, the city wall was particularly low.

For the needs of military defense, in the third year of Hongwu (1370 AD), the wall was rebuilt and expanded on the basis of the old one, and the whole wall was covered with bricks. Later, Jingtai, Zhengde, Jiajing, Longqing and Wanli dynasties carried out ten repairs and renovations, updated the towers and added enemy towers. In the 43rd year of Kangxi (1703 AD), the emperor passed through Pingyao on his western tour, so four large towers were built to make the city more spectacular. During the more than 500 years of the Ming and Qing dynasties, there were 26 repairs and reconstructions, so the city wall style of the Ming and Qing dynasties has been maintained to this day. The total circumference of Pingyao City Wall is 6,163 meters, and the wall is about 12 meters high, dividing the Pingyao County with an area of about 2.25 square kilometers into two worlds with very different styles.

The existing Pingyao City Wall is one of the three intact county city walls in my country. It is the largest and most complete of the three cities. There are six gates around the city, one in the north and south, two in the east and west, and there are urn cities outside the six gates.

It is said that Pingyao is the most complete ancient city in China, and it is indeed worthy of its reputation. It is not only the city wall, not only the old houses and alleys within the city wall, but also the simple residents.

Walk under the ancient city walls and feel the journey through time.

Pingyao Ancient City Wall is a major attraction of Pingyao Ancient City.

The city wall is 6,157 meters long, 10 meters high, and has different widths. There are 72 battlements and 3,000 crenels. There are four gates in the city wall: the east, south, west, and north gates. The three gates have towers. The drainage system of the city wall is built inside. The width of the city wall is at least three meters. It is paved with bricks, and people can walk freely on it. There are fences on both sides of the top sidewalk. The height of the outer side is about two meters, and the inner part is about 50 centimeters. The outer fence is military-style. Walking on the city wall, you can see the entire Pingyao Ancient City. As a county-level city wall, the Pingyao Ancient City Wall has been preserved so well after the ups and downs of history. It is really a wonder of the world. The soil part inside the Pingyao Ancient City Wall has been damaged more or less due to the erosion of rain over the years, and is now under protection and repair. On some sections of the sidewalk on the city wall, the floor tiles are engraved with a unified font: "Pingyao Ancient City Brick", which looks very classical! Tourists who come here must walk a section of the ancient city wall in person to say that they have been to Pingyao Ancient City.

The towering ancient city walls are thick and deep. The streets, shops and houses in the ancient city still maintain the traditional layout and style. With a strong Shanxi merchant culture and the simple Jinzhong folk customs, Pingyao Ancient City exudes its quiet and restrained temperament.

The ancient city wall we see today was expanded in the third year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty (1370), and the city tower was built for Emperor Kangxi when he passed through Pingyao during his tour.

【Ancient City Wall】

Pingyao City is square in shape, with a circumference of 6,163 meters. The southern city wall was built along the winding Zhongdu River, and the other three sides were all surrounded by straight lines. The city wall is 8-10 meters high, 8-12 meters thick at the bottom, and 3-6 meters thick at the top. The wall is built of rammed earth, with straw laid in layers as reinforcement. The outer wall is covered with white bricks, and the top is paved with blue bricks. There are drainage channels inside. There are 6 gates around the city wall, two in the east and west, with upper and lower gates; one in the north and south. The gates are staggered, and a city wall is built outside the gate. Both inside and outside are paved with stone strips. There was originally a tower on each doorway. There are platforms at the four corners of the city wall, and originally there was a corner tower on each corner. Now the city gate tower and corner tower have disappeared. Kuixing Tower and Wenchang Pavilion were built in the southeast corner of the city wall, but they are also abandoned. Yin Jifu's command platform still exists on the east wall gate. A horse road was built on the inside of the city wall. The outer wall of the city wall is divided into sections and built with 71 battlements, each with a watchtower, wooden boards in the middle and arrow holes on the outside. The wall has a parapet 0.6 meters high and a battlement 2 meters high.

The urn city, also called the moon city, is built outside the city gate to enhance the city's defense capabilities. The urn city gates and the main city gates of Pingyao Ancient City are mostly at a 90° angle (except for the South Gate and the Lower East Gate). Even if the enemy breaks through the urn city gates, there is still the main city gate for defense. Since the space inside the urn city is narrow, it is not easy to launch a large-scale attack, which slows down the enemy's attack speed. The defenders on the top of the city wall can shoot from all directions from a high position, giving the enemy a fatal blow, just like catching a turtle in a jar.

After breakfast, we started shopping. Unfortunately, the weather was not good, it was cloudy, but it was more in line with the temperament of the ancient northern city in the Qing Dynasty.

The Pingyao Ancient City Scenic Spots Package costs 122 yuan, which includes various scenic spots in the city. We first went to the city wall tower to overlook the ancient city.

Pingyao in Shanxi is known as one of the "four best-preserved ancient cities" along with Langzhong in Sichuan, Lijiang in Yunnan, and Shexian in Anhui. It is also one of the only two ancient county towns in China that have successfully applied for World Cultural Heritage status as a whole ancient city.

The streets, shops and market buildings within the city wall retain the style of the Ming and Qing Dynasties; the area outside the city wall is called the New City. This is a wonderful place where ancient and modern buildings are integrated and complement each other, which makes people think endlessly. So when you come to Shanxi, you must visit this place.

Cars are not allowed to enter the ancient city during the day, and can only be parked in the parking lot outside the city at night. After having lunch at the tourist center, there was an innkeeper next to me soliciting business, which always made me feel uneasy. It happened that there was someone who had been there before and said that the inn was good. So I followed him into the city. This is a private electric car used as a shuttle bus. After entering the city, find the inn first and settle down first. Don't say it, this inn is really good. The two-entry courtyard is full of guest rooms. The owner is also enthusiastic and the service is thoughtful. This inn is located in the center. There is a street outside the door, which can be said to be connected in all directions. After a short rest, go out to play on the street.

You can see that the city walls are all made of earth, and some of the soil has been lost. The uncle on the roadside explained to me that the earth is the old city wall, and the brickwork was built later.

Warm reminder: The soil of the city wall has been soaked in rain for a long time and is very likely to slip. Please do not walk close to the city wall to avoid accidents.

Now the Pingyao ancient city wall is in danger of soil erosion and falling off, so the wall is not fully open to the public. Only the South Gate and the North Gate are open, and only a section of the wall can be walked on, and most of it is still under repair.

The lady who explained the story told us that the Pingyao Ancient City Wall has a long history and has been under continuous repair since the Ming Dynasty. Walking on the steps full of history and touching the ancient bricks and stones, it seems like going back to the past and feeling the joys and sorrows of the people at that time. At the same time, I was amazed at my own insignificance.

The city wall of Pingyao Ancient City has been preserved very intact. As long as you have the time and strength, you can still walk around the wall. The inside of the wall is rammed earth and the outside is made of blue bricks. Although it is not magnificent, it is still very tall.

Buy a ticket across the street outside the North Gate to enter the city gate. Taking advantage of the cloudy day, take a walk around the city wall first. The city wall of the ancient city was expanded and rammed earth in the third year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty (1370 AD) on the basis of the original Western Zhou old city. It was repaired in both the Ming and Qing dynasties. Climb up the steps along the horse path inside the Gongji Gate, and you can finally get close to the North Gate Tower. The Pingyao Tower was first built in the Ming Dynasty and repaired and rebuilt in the 42nd year of Kangxi in the Qing Dynasty (1703). It has a history of more than 300 years. Going east along the city wall, passing through battlements and watchtowers, looking at the houses outside the city from afar and the houses inside the city from close up, you can feel the vicissitudes of the past century. In the Ming and Qing Dynasties, this was just an ordinary county town. The towering city walls and the battlements with eaves reaching the sky were not much different from other county towns. Unfortunately, too many city walls and county towns have been lost in the long river of history for hundreds of years. Fortunately, Pingyao's city wall has survived the wind and rain and wars and has been presented to future generations. For this reason alone, it is worth our admiration and worship. When you reach the corner tower, you have reached the east end of the city wall. There is a corner tower at each corner of the city wall to make up for the weak defense link at the corner of the city wall. The northeast corner tower is named "Qiyue Tower", the southeast corner tower is named "Ningxiu Tower", the southwest corner tower is named "Ruiai Tower", and the northwest corner tower is named "Xiadie Tower". Go south past the corner tower and pass the Lower East Gate. Not far away, there are several bronze figures. This is the site of Yin Jifu's command platform. According to legend, after King Xuan of Zhou ascended the throne in 827 BC, he sent General Yin Jifu to lead troops to the north to fight against the Xianyun. He won victory after victory and was later ordered to station troops in present-day Pingyao, build additional city walls, train soldiers, and practice martial arts. Go west past the Upper East Gate to the south end of the city wall to Kuixing Tower.

Pingyao Ancient City Wall, although it is an ancient city wall at the county level, a small city of three miles, but there are low houses inside and outside the city, but it looks taller, longer and wider than other ancient city walls. Pingyao Ancient City Wall is also a unique city. The four walls of ancient Chinese cities generally have one gate or two gates each. There is one gate on each side of the north and south walls, and two gates on each side of the east and west walls. The city is built like a tortoise, so the shape is more lovely and vivid, and the meaning is more beautiful and interesting. Walking along the inner wall, a long section of rammed earth wall seems to be taking a wall anatomy class. You can see the rammed earth piled up layer by layer, and the texture of the rammed earth is compacted layer by layer. You can see how Pingyao City is refined and strengthened. The bottom of the wall is widened, with stone strips as the base and blue bricks as the outside to resist the flying arrows and stones of the siege. Climbing the wall, looking at the enemy tower, the battlements are like teeth, as if facing a big enemy, and the atmosphere of being ready for battle. It is said that there are 72 watchtowers and 3,000 battlements in Pingyao Ancient City, symbolizing Confucius' 72 wise men and 3,000 disciples. Although they are equipped with military equipment, they are also equipped with culture and virtue. They show people the way of being cautious in military and martial arts, "to keep people from being unconvinced, cultivate culture and virtue to win them over", "to win by fighting is not a good way, but to defeat the enemy without fighting is the best way". There is knowledge everywhere, and the craftsman's mind is used everywhere, and the cultural quality of the city is demonstrated everywhere.

From the city wall on the south gate, I walked half a circle by accident, which took about an hour, overlooking the ancient city and many living areas of the ancient city. There are many well-renovated buildings, as well as some dilapidated houses. On the contrary, it is very natural, and it is farther away from the commercial and bustling market on the ancient city wall.

The city wall is included in the pass and is open from 8:00 to around 18:00.

We got up early to climb the city wall, from the north gate up and the south gate down, which is equivalent to walking half of the city. It takes about an hour in normal weather, but on that day, while enjoying the beauty of the ancient city, we were also blown away by the wind from the heights, and it was almost impossible to stand. It took two hours. The west gate section was under renovation, so tourists were concentrated on the road from the north gate to the east gate to the south gate. The east gate was the midpoint, and some tourists were stranded in a dilemma. The strong wind and yellow sand in the morning will probably be unforgettable for many people.

It is not difficult to even walk a whole circle.

I got on the South Gate and walked to the West Gate. I didn't wear sneakers because I wanted to show off. I was very tired. I wanted to get off the city wall halfway, but there was no exit. So if you want to walk on the city wall, you must be prepared. There are only four main gates to go up and down. But after passing the tower and the city wall, I didn't meet anyone, so it was suitable for taking pictures~

Pingyao in Shanxi is one of the only two ancient cities in China that have been successfully nominated as a World Cultural Heritage site. The ancient city has six gates, forming the limbs, head and tail of a tortoise, and the streets in the ancient city form the lines on the tortoise's back. (xiao wu dui, ha ha ha!).

The ancient city wall has two walls, the inner and outer walls. The outer wall is a horse-blocking wall to defend against cavalry; the inner wall is a parapet wall to protect the soldiers on the wall; the people live in the city. According to legend, a father and daughter were repairing a wall. The father slipped and almost fell off the wall. The daughter was quick to catch her father, but she herself fell due to inertia and died. Therefore, in order to commemorate the daughter's filial piety, people named it "parapet wall".

The Pingyao Ancient City Wall is flat and spacious, with a total length of more than 6 kilometers and a side length of about 2 kilometers. It is quite tiring to walk around. We walked from the South Gate to the southeast corner. This section of the city wall is not a straight road, but a bit winding, which is very beautiful. You can overlook the courtyards of the residents below from the city wall, which is full of life. There are no bicycles for rent on the top, so you can only walk. There are no street stalls either.

After entering the city from the South Gate, walk along the ancient city wall and take a close look at the rammed earth and the straw reinforcements in the wall. This city wall was built in the Western Zhou Dynasty and was rebuilt in the third year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty (1370). The section near the South Gate is winding along the Zhongdu River, and the other three sides are straight. Because there are no special scenic spots around the South Gate, you can see some undecorated residential houses and quietly experience the scene of the ancient city in its original ecological state.

By Little Old Girl |

The city wall was an important barrier used by the ancients to resist foreign invasions. It included two lines of defense, the moat and the city wall, and used defense facilities such as watchtowers, corner towers and battlements on the city wall. The soldiers defending the city used bows and arrows, cannons and rolling stones to stop the enemy. In ancient times, there were no large construction machinery such as excavators, bulldozers and cranes. Construction could only rely on people digging and carrying on their shoulders. Building this city wall was a huge project that required no money and effort.

In ancient times, when soldiers defended the city, they had to shoot or throw stones through the small windows of the enemy towers, corner towers and battlements to prevent the enemy from attacking with bows and arrows and earth cannons. However, once the enemy rushed to the outside of the city wall, it would be impossible to see and shoot the enemy, so a "blind spot" was formed here. To solve this fatal weakness of military facilities, the ancients extended a part of the city wall outward at a certain distance, and its appearance looked like a long face of a horse, so it was called "horse face".

The horse face of Pingyao Ancient City Wall has three functions: First, it strengthens the city wall. The common "corrugated paper" and "rebar" are typical objects that use the regular thickening of parts to achieve the same function of thickening the whole. Second, because the enemy tower built on the city wall is located outside the main city wall, the enemy in the "blind spot" outside the city wall can be seen clearly. After the enemy tower is moved outward, space is created for the limited main passage on the top of the city wall, which is convenient for the smooth passage of soldiers and chariots.

On the roof of the building we live in, different amounts of rainwater are generated every time it rains or snows and needs to be discharged in time, so downpipes are hung on the walls in front and behind the building. The purpose is to prevent rainwater from soaking the walls during the drainage process. Once the walls are soaked and wet, they will not only be damaged and their lifespan will be shortened, but they will also penetrate into the inside and cause secondary damage.

Let's look at the ancient city wall. In order to make the outer wall straighter and stronger and less vulnerable to digging, a layer of brick wall was built on the outer surface of the earthen wall. The way rainwater is discharged from the top of the city wall is also completely different from that of the building. In order to leave no traces of climbing and stepping on the outer wall, no drainage facilities are built on the outer wall, and only the accumulated water on the top is allowed to drain inward. However, the inner wall of the city wall is an exposed earthen wall, which cannot withstand the erosion of rainwater, so a water channel is built with bricks at each water outlet. A closer look will reveal that the water channel is not built with flat bricks, but in a flat plate structure. This allows the water to reduce pressure step by step and slow down the flow rate of water, thereby greatly reducing the erosion and damage of the foundation of the city wall by falling water, and plays a role in protecting the city wall.

A walk on the city wall is definitely the best place to relax after dinner!

If you want to go, go early. They will drive you down at a certain time. If you go down late, they will lock you up and you can only sleep on the city wall at night. This is unreasonable! In short, they only care about collecting money. A common problem in tourist attractions!

2017.7.23 Liangzi and I visited the Pingyao Ancient City Wall. It was well maintained and the spectacular wall was full of history. Unfortunately, the service and management were poor.

When you go to Pingyao Ancient City, you must walk on the city wall. Walking around the city wall for about 6 kilometers, you will feel like a city. Except for a few towers where there are more people, most places on the city wall are so quiet that you can't bear to rush through.

The ancient city wall is a witness to the ancient history. It is strong and square, standing tall and majestic, giving people a sense of solidity, dignity and awe.

Every few dozen meters, there is a tower protruding from the wall. There is a watchtower on the tower, which is mainly used for military defense. The main weapons for siege in ancient times were bows and arrows and crossbows. The soldiers guarding the city dared not easily stick their heads out, which made the foot of the wall a blind spot for defense. In order to change this disadvantage, a powerful shooting network was formed on the tower, which greatly enhanced the defense capability. There are 72 watchtowers and 3,000 battlements on the wall.

Judging from the fact that you can constantly meet foreigners, this is a famous place. There are many tourists, and the night view is a shopping scene. You are facing businesses. The ancient city is similar, just a list of shops. It is big, but it takes a long time to turn around. I feel like vomiting after turning around. I am tired of the aesthetics. You must buy a combined ticket. 130 yuan. There are a lot of fake beef, vinegar, and lacquerware inside, all of which are full of counterfeit and shoddy products. Personally, I feel that many lacquerware boxes are like something to hold foam and broken bones, haha. Don't buy blindly if you don't understand. There are a lot of vinegar, but no matter the price and quality, it must be the same as vinegar, either vinegar is diluted with water, or water is diluted with vinegar, so it is not recommended to buy. Go to regular supermarkets, which are available all over the country. The food inside is more expensive. The beef inside is even more expensive, and the taste is too general, so it is even more not recommended to buy. The ancestral tofu brain inside is just a paste, it is so unpalatable, it seems that the ancestors were also stupid. Noodles... definitely not as good as what most people make at home. Maybe I didn't eat the authentic ones, but from the noodle places I specifically found, they all want to make money and fool tourists - this is the case in Taiyuan, and even worse in Pingyao. I don't want to say more. The scenery is generally good, the ticket price is high, and the quality of the merchants is average. The main complaint is the Pingyao Ancient City Lion Head Restaurant (a designated spot for battery shuttle buses). The boss lady recommends high-priced and low-quality things - beef, the authentic one in my store, a 20-year-old store... Everyone would think that her family would make a fine beef. 58 a plate, a few slices, the same as outside. I dug deeper and questioned her, and she said, what I just said, didn't I say it was made by my family! Nonsense, take photos and complain! If any tourists see the comments, don't go there in the future, and let your relatives and friends who go there avoid this crappy store.

Pingyao Ancient City is one of the most complete old city districts in China, so its old city wall is a real antique, worth a closer look! In addition, when you come out of the West Gate, you can buy Pingyao Guanyun beef in a nearby supermarket, which is cheaper than outside!

On the first day on the city wall, I walked from the South Gate to the West Gate. There were not many people along the way. Tourists were all watching the scenery on the city tower, but I liked to stay away from tourists. I took selfies on the city wall without any audience. Hahahaha. To add to my previous comment on Pingyao Ancient City: "On the last day in the ancient city, I got up early in the morning and walked around the city wall. It was perfect to end my trip in this way. If you see this comment, I also suggest that you spend some time walking around. It is more interesting and meaningful than shopping in the commercial street. (Walking around at a constant speed takes about an hour) O(∩_∩)O~"

The entire Pingyao Ancient City is surrounded by an ancient city wall, which was built by Liu Bowen in the past. The gate of the city wall is cleverly designed, and it is difficult for the enemy to attack. There are two gates, and even if you get in through one, you will be locked up and caught in a jar. One side of the city wall is made of rammed loess, which can be said to be very advanced in that era.

History is a wall. Standing on the wall and looking at history, you will feel a special feeling in your heart.

When you enter or leave Pingyao Ancient City, you can see the ancient city wall here, but the part that can be climbed is limited. Some places have been repaired many times, and some parts are simply not allowed to be climbed because they are very old and dilapidated.

Having seen the city walls of Xi'an and Nanjing, I feel that Pingyao's city wall lacks something in terms of scale and content. Just climb up the city wall from the south gate and walk a short distance to experience it.

It should be one of the most well-preserved city walls in China. Although it is small in scale, it has a lot of historical charm.

It feels good to be on the city wall. You need good weather to take good photos.

Although the city wall is not very spectacular, it retains its original flavor

Actually it's OK, well preserved, it seems that the tower is rebuilt

The sunset was very nice. It’s such a beautiful place, hahaha. I walked half a circle, which means I can’t walk the entire city wall.

The ancient city is surrounded by an ancient city wall built in the early Ming Dynasty. The circumference of the city wall is more than 6,000 meters and the height is about 12 meters, which separates Pingyao County into two worlds with different styles. The streets, shops and city buildings within the city wall retain the style of Ming and Qing Dynasties, which complement the modern buildings of the new city outside the city wall.

Pingyao City has six ancient city gates, among which a section of the ancient road at the gate that has not been repaired is enclosed by a fence. There are two deep ruts on the old stone pavement, indicating the prosperous scene of the city gate in the past with the flow of carriages and horses.

Pingyao City Wall is a national key cultural relic unit and is the best-preserved ancient city wall in northern China. Pingyao City was first built in the Zhou Dynasty. The existing brick-clad city wall was built in the Ming Dynasty, and the rammed earth inside the city wall can be clearly seen inside the city. Pingyao currently has six city gates, of which the towers on the west, north and south gates are preserved (the south gate was rebuilt in the 1990s), and only the city gates of the east gate and the other two small gates remain. Climbing the city is limited to the south gate and the north gate, as well as the three places of Yunlu Street in front of the Confucian Temple. Going up and down the east and west sides is not allowed, so this factor must also be considered when calculating the itinerary.

The tour guide said that the design of the city gate in the picture below has its own military strategy. When the enemy comes in from the gate on the left side of the picture, firstly, they will see the wall opposite and will be confused subconsciously and look for the exit to buy time for the defenders; secondly, the enemy can be trapped in this corner, and the defenders on the city wall can attack the enemy downwards.

There are rickshaws on the city wall. If you are interested, you can experience it.

Pingyao, the entire ancient city wall, has long battlements and towers. The Kuixing Tower, the Dianjiang Terrace, and the Wenchang Pavilion are dotted on it, and it is famous as the "Turtle City" in ancient and modern times.

To be honest, I have been to many ancient city walls in China. I have a deep memory of the one in Xi'an, but I can't quite remember the one in Pingyao... I really doubt who has eaten up my memory. I only remember that there were cannons on the city wall... and there was also a place below where the Japanese were annihilated; it seems to be an attraction included in the general ticket?

The ancient city is well preserved, with some walls made of brick and stone on one side and rammed earth on the other. In addition, some places on the ancient city wall are relatively low, so you should pay attention to safety when playing on the wall, especially those with children and those who look down at their phones.
