It is said that Dashengci Temple was first built during the Tianbao period of the Tang Dynasty. It was known as the largest temple in Chengdu at that time. Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty bestowed the name of the temple. Master Xuanzang, the Tang monk, became a monk here. There are all kinds of legends. I was confused after listening to the introduction. In fact, I feel that this is a newly built modern version of the temple, made of poured concrete. The decoration materials are also very modern and new, but it is indeed built in a decent manner, so I will believe it for the time being.

There are beautiful scenery in the temple, cute monk dolls, twelve zodiac dolls, hydrangeas, a tree full of flowers of mandshurica (poisonous, don't touch), the wall with the red coat falling off, and the birds flying to the ground to pick up fruits at the exit street. In my eyes, they are all beautiful scenery.

The ancient temple in the downtown area has a different flavor. You can visit it while visiting Chunxi Road Taikoo Li.

Daci Temple is a perfect combination of tradition and modernity. As soon as I entered the temple, my noisy heart calmed down. There were not many people in the temple, which showed the solemnity and mystery of Buddhism. The temple is cleverly constructed, the sculptures on the roof are also unique, and there are all kinds of flowers and plants carefully cultivated by monks in the courtyard. The whole temple is full of poetry and Zen. Walking in, I heard Buddhist music, and climbed the steps to see a grand Buddhist meeting. Many old people, wearing Buddhist robes or plain casual clothes, lined up in a long line in the temple and chanted silently while following the Buddhist music. The whole song only repeats one sentence: "Namo Guanshiyin Bodhisattva." But it doesn't feel monotonous. Every time I hear a sentence, I feel different in my heart. The old people are very pious, with their hands clasped together and silently chanting in their mouths, closing their eyes and walking in unison. I was greatly shocked when I saw this scene for the first time. The Sanskrit sound seemed to cleanse my whole soul. I stood in front of the temple for a long time, and the whole person was completely empty. There was only one sentence left in my mind: "Namo Guanshiyin Bodhisattva." I don't know how long I stood there before I came to my senses and walked towards the center of the temple gate. Only then did I see the plaque "Daxiong Hall" and the huge statue of Guanyin. Guanyin Bodhisattva is made of gold and has a peaceful face. Her big palms seem to have some power to attract people to her palms. Her slightly narrowed eyes give a scrutinizing and compassionate look that tortures people's hearts. I felt vaguely that she was taking me somewhere. My feet were a little floating, but I seemed to be attracted by a magnet and couldn't leave. When I was a child, a Buddhist teacher said that I had a good affinity with Buddhism. At this time, I also had some vague understanding. I stood in front of the temple for a long time in a trance, and finally left the temple at the urging of my father. Before leaving, I took a last look at the people who were performing rituals in the temple. When you are old, whether you believe it or not, come to the Buddha often to calm your mind, recall the merits you have accumulated, and reflect on the sins you have committed. It is really a good choice to have a spiritual peace at the end of your life. The flower pots in the courtyard are planted with huge lotus leaves and lotus flowers, which are growing well. Lotus has always been a symbol of Buddha. I feel calmer when I look at the lotus flowers. It is the first time I have seen lotus flowers planted in the soil. From a distance, they look like they are growing in a lotus pond. Maybe it is because they listen to the Buddha's teachings every day in front of the Buddha, the lotus flowers here have a unique tranquil charm. Faith has such a magical power.

It is not suitable to take photos for religious reasons, so I did not take photos in Daci Temple. In general, Daci Temple is really a good place for meditation. It does not have the commercial atmosphere of most temples at all. It returns to its original nature. This is much better than many temples in China and is more suitable for feeling the solemnity of Buddhism.

Daci Temple is quite big and crowded. When you walk inside, you will see a group of people chanting. It is definitely a place to purify the soul.

The Buddha statues enshrined in each temple may be similar, but each has its own unique features.

People burn incense and pray, chant sutras and sit in meditation, visit and tour, or drink tea and listen to the zither.

People can not only enjoy physical and mental tranquility and peace, but also be enlightened by the wisdom of Buddhism and feel the profoundness of traditional culture.

The purpose of our visit to Daci Temple is to drink tea. Compared with Heming Temple, the environment here is quieter and more relaxing. The gaiwan tea here is 15 yuan per cup. The boss gave us a pot of boiling water and we made our own cups and refilled them. Haha, it was self-service throughout the process, but it made us feel more comfortable.

Although it is a Zen temple, it is full of endless fun. The cute big-headed monk is extremely adorable, and the row of cartoon animals next to him are also transformed into little monks, which are so cute and make this thousand-year-old temple lively.

Next to Taikoo Li, you can go in and take a look if you are interested, it's free. There are many photography subjects to shoot.

All the temples have been renovated. If you go to Taikoo Li, it is still worth visiting the Daci Temple next to it.

There is an old tea shop inside, with wooden chairs and covered tea bowls, which still has a bit of the old Chengdu feel.

Daci Temple is right next to Taikoo Li, enjoying peace and quiet in the midst of bustle. Walking into the temple is like walking from the bustling city into a peaceful paradise, bringing a touch of coolness to the hot summer days.

I really can't imagine that it is located in the city center. I seem to have entered from the back door (don't ask me why I know it is the back door 😂😂😂) because it was very quiet and peaceful when I entered, but when I walked forward, I found that I went to each house from the back to the front 😂😂😂, the flowers inside are really beautiful, and there are peppers, tomatoes and peanuts grown by myself. It's amazing! It's amazing that I went out of the main gate and found the most prosperous Taikoo Li! It feels like these two different worlds are harmoniously connected!

You can visit each hall, and the statues of Bodhisattvas enshrined in them are very exquisite. The teahouse is a must-go in Daci Temple, where you can experience the teahouse culture in the temple. It is basically self-service here, and there is no one serving tea and water. Maybe the volunteers in the temple only serve Bodhisattvas and not people. Go to the side to buy tea first. The price is about the same as that of ordinary teahouses, and there are many kinds of tea to choose from. Then take the tea bowl and the kettle to find a mottled square tea seat, sit on the bamboo chair that makes a creaking sound, and make a bowl of fragrant covered tea. You can cross your legs and chat, which is the authentic leisure life in Chengdu. For people like me who used to go to teahouses every day with my grandfather when I was a child, it is very familiar and I miss it very much.

After getting off the plane and checking in, I had a Sichuan meal and then went to Taikoo Li for a stroll. There is the ancient Dashengci Temple, which is where Xuanzang became a monk.

Daci Temple, also known as the Ancient Dashengci Temple, is located in Section 1, Dongfeng Road, Chengdu City, Sichuan Province. It was built between the 3rd and 4th centuries AD and is known as the "No. 1 Jungle in Aurora."



In 622 AD, Xuanzang officially became a monk in this temple. Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty granted it the title of "Imperially Built Dashengci Temple". It has experienced ups and downs and was destroyed by wars many times. The existing halls were rebuilt successively during the Shunzhi and Tongzhi periods of the Qing Dynasty.

We rode here, close to Chunxi Road and the youth hostel where we stayed. It’s quiet in the bustling city, and it’s nice to have a place to relax temporarily!

Daci Temple has always been a popular temple, but nowadays, hidden among the bustling Chunxi Road and Taikoo Li, it has lost its former grandeur and is now quietly solemn.

In many travel guides about Chengdu, people always mention Daci Temple after the flattering introduction of Sino-Ocean Taikoo Li, which can easily lead people to misunderstand that it is just a free small temple where people can rest after a hard time shopping. In fact, during the Tang and Song dynasties, this place accounted for 30% of Chengdu's prosperity.
