Emei Ecological Monkey Area

峨眉生态猴区

The Emeishan Ecological Monkey Area is located near the "One Line Sky" at the foot of Hongchunping and above Qingyin Pavilion. It is currently the largest natural wild monkey area in China.
The monkey area features plank roads, pavilions, and rope bridges for visitors to observe and interact with the monkeys. You can buy some monkey food in advance at the monkey food sales point at the foot of the mountain.
Most monkeys are not as friendly as you might think. They may snatch food from visitors or rummage through their bags. Therefore, do not leave the plank road easily and do not enter the park with food in your hands.

🔼A short walk from Qingyin Pavilion leads to the monkey area, which is where I saw the most monkeys🐒 on this trip. I didn't see a single monkey all the way to Hongchunping. What about the legendary wild monkeys that rule the mountains? Monkeys are far less aggressive than some people say. I've never seen a monkey get angry. If you don't tease them, they won't cause trouble. After all, they only show up to eat, so why bother? So don't worry or even be afraid of these little guys. Just don't provoke them or tempt them with food, but if they're stingy and refuse to share, they'll be fine😝.

🔼The so-called ecological monkey area is more like an artificial wild monkey paradise.

By Grand debut |

The ecological monkey area is only 15 minutes away from Yitiantian, and there are canyon scenery along the way. There are also some people selling monkey food, which is not expensive, but the quantity is not large. The key is that they will not tell you that there are no monkeys ahead, but will definitely tell you to buy some to feed the monkeys!

There weren't a single monkey in the monkey area. Later, the elderly couple we were traveling with said they'd left earlier than us and, when they got there, they saw the monkeys being stopped across the bridge by the caretaker for feeding, who wouldn't let them in. Before we left, the owner explained that the monkeys in the area were all well-behaved, used to being fed by tourists and therefore quite docile. The monkeys that showed up mid-route were rogues, and everyone should be wary.

By Danny |

As we walked and ran along the One-Line Sky Trail, we saw more and more signs warning us to beware of monkeys, signaling we were getting closer to the main group. Finally, we spotted monkeys on a wooden bridge, being controlled by a ranger. They were constantly shooing them away with firecrackers and bamboo poles, so we could only take photos from a distance... However, this wasn't the monkeys' largest concentration. Further up the mountain, we reached the monkey den (🐒🐒). Without further ado, here's the picture. The monkeys are incredibly intelligent, and watching them eat is fascinating. They say the monkeys of Mount Emei are ferocious and prone to attacking people, but the monkeys I saw were civilized and friendly with tourists. I offered the bread in my pocket to the monkeys, and it was quickly devoured. I wished I'd stayed longer, but I had to catch the evening train. With reluctance, I bid farewell to the monkey area and returned the same way.

By dry skiing |

Monkeys are naturally playful, but when pampered and nurtured by their owners, their playfulness can turn into ferocity. On the way to the Golden Summit, I witnessed a monkey leap onto a tourist's shoulder. The tourist crouched down, almost to his knees, but the monkey refused to dismount. The surrounding tourists were snapping photos, and the monkey seemed even more pleased. Unafraid, it remained there for a long, long time. It's said that the monkeys here are relatively civilized and haven't hurt anyone. Downhill from Wannian Temple, there's a path leading to the monkey area. There, the monkeys follow their owners' instructions, leaping onto tourists' shoulders to demand money. If they don't get what they want, they'll bite and scratch. Tourists who get injured are responsible for their own medical expenses and tetanus prevention. Monkeys are protected animals, so even if you don't provoke them, they'll still provoke you. Try to avoid them!

The Emeishan Wild Monkey Sanctuary is currently the largest in my country, located within the mountains at altitudes ranging from 800 to 2,400 meters. According to statistics, six relatively concentrated populations of over 1,000 monkeys are found, with the most intelligent monkeys found in the central and mountainous areas of Mount Emei. This area boasts flowing springs and waterfalls, lush forests and bamboo groves, abundant flowers and vegetation, and a mild climate, creating an ideal habitat for the monkeys. Visitors here can truly immerse themselves in the fairyland of the Flower-Fruit Mountain and Water Curtain Cave from the mythical world of "Journey to the West," and fully appreciate the ecological beauty of the Monkey King's descendants in the wild monkey sanctuary.

By lazy person |

This monkey seems to be domesticated, although the gardener who takes care of it feeds it monkey food.

I didn't see it rushing to grab food, as if it was spoiled.

We waited for a while, but still no monkeys appeared...

It is said that monkeys often appear in the area of Qingyin Pinghu.

We didn't see a single monkey when we arrived. Maybe we arrived too early and the monkeys weren't at work yet...

When we returned the same way, there was indeed a group of monkeys teasing tourists.

In life, people often describe thin people as monkeys and smart people as monkey spirits.

After seeing the monkeys in Mount Emei, I felt that this description was not appropriate.

Because some of the monkeys here are as fat as pigs

By scholar's spirit |

The monkeys in Mount Emei are a must-see. When entering the monkey area, I was a little nervous, worried that the monkeys would not come, and also worried that the monkeys would come and mess around.

By Wonderful News |

The scenery is still good on this mountain road.

By Children chasing stars |

The monkeys are very lively and will eat anything you give them. But don't tease them. They won't attack you if you don't. There are administrators who will drive the monkeys away appropriately. You can also see squirrels.

By Single young people |

There are several monkey areas on Mount Emei, but it seems that there are more monkeys in the morning.

By Xiaojuannan |

There were warning signs along the way. I've heard monkeys are very aggressive, but I didn't see any until the entire monkey viewing path. A little further along, the area became bustling. Hey, there were a lot of monkeys on the path. They looked quite cute. The monkeys on Mount Emei are different from those elsewhere; they're especially strong and chubby, and there was even a baby monkey.

By Beautiful Sheep |

This is the coolest monkey in Mount Emei. As soon as he came, he grabbed my chest and looked at my chest.

By Brave |

The monkeys of Mount Emei are world-famous for their savagery and predatory behavior. Our honest experience: They were okay. Remember, don't tease, don't feed, don't pick pockets, and don't handle plastic bags. Don't let them think you have food, or they'll snatch it! The monkey habitat, while somewhat dangerous, is well worth a visit!

From the monkey ecological area to the exit gate, the scenery along the way is endless, with clear mountains, gurgling streams, pavilions and towers, which are dazzling!

By Xu Ke |

Be careful!!! The monkeys can sneak up on you and are quite aggressive, so try not to tease them. Don't hold plastic bags or anything like that in your hands, because a monkey sneaked up on me from behind and snatched a whole bag of fruit. I was trying to take a picture of it with my phone, but another monkey snatched my phone away and... disappeared into the mountains. Mine, mine, the fruit it's holding is mine.

By sunflower |

I used to think monkeys were cute, very much like humans in every way, but also very adorable. But when a monkey walks towards you and asks you for food, it becomes a bit scary.

The ham given by tourists was skillfully opened and eaten. It was the first time I saw such a wild monkey and I was very happy.

By Groundhog |

Monkeys are very aggressive and will steal things. One monkey even jumped on my head and grabbed my hair, which was very scary.

By Mengmeng's Mom |

2018.7.17💔🐒Only saw a dozen or so on the other side of the mountain. So many tourists were sad.

By iYang Xiaoting |

Monkeys are cute, but be careful of being attacked by them

By Lobohuang |

Mount Emei's entrance and exit tickets (185 yuan) grant free entry to the monkey area, currently the largest natural ecological monkey sanctuary in my country. Hearing the monkeys here enjoy fruit, I brought plums with me, but... I didn't encounter any real monkeys. Still, the beautiful scenery along the way was delightful. Then I thought, there are all sorts of fruit and snack stalls along the way. If the monkeys were really around, wouldn't they be afraid of snatching their food? The monkeys probably hide in the woods, away from humans. Perhaps you'd be more likely to see them in winter, when they're sure to come closer to humans to forage for food!

By Suxian Jinlin |

Whether you can meet monkeys depends on your luck, but you can usually meet them. When you go to Mount Emei, you will inevitably have to fight with monkeys. The monkeys in Mount Emei are very wild. If they see you holding something, they will come up to grab it. You should put your things away. It is best to bring a bamboo pole and knock on the ground with it. The monkeys will be scared and dare not approach.

By Xiaoju |

The monkey area is very large, and it is not easy to see monkeys. It depends on luck.

By Cat Tea |

Most of the monkeys visitors see in the ecological monkey area are worldly-wise, accustomed to the daily comings and goings of people. They simply seek food. So, if you don't offend me, I won't offend you. Show your kindness, and they won't hurt you.

Once again, I want to emphasize that children must feed monkeys under the guidance of local people (those taking photos or selling monkey food). They are more familiar with the monkeys here and know which ones are more docile. However, please choose carefully based on the situation of your own children. We are not responsible for any accidents.

By Strong peach |

The walk from Wuxiangang to the wild monkey area took about 1.5 hours. Along the way, signs throughout the monkey area read, "The mountain monkeys are untamed, their wildness remains, please be safe." We suspected these monkeys might have been tamed by "someone." They showed no fear of people, charging into crowds to steal items from tourists' hands or bags. Their eyes betrayed neither fear nor awe of humans, but rather disdain and seriousness. Some even blocked the path until visitors purchased the designated food. This, in turn, made us lose interest in the monkeys, and we left the mountain.

By Taotao |

Along the way, we asked people heading out if they'd seen any monkeys, so we could decide whether to continue. Some said they had, while others said they hadn't. I guess those who said they had seen monkeys were trying to keep us hopeful. We eventually reached a less crowded area, but still hadn't seen any monkeys. Seeing that time was running out, we decided to turn around and head back. The bananas we'd brought for the monkeys were wasted.

Although we didn't see any monkeys, the scenery along the way was still very pleasant.

By Small tank |

The monkeys are in the ecological monkey area. It takes about 20 minutes to walk from the attraction sign to see them. It seems there aren't many monkeys around. The monkeys love to eat fruit, so bring some if you want to feed them.

By Orange Chen |

I heard that the monkeys in Emei Mountain are fattened up by tourists, but when I went there, I was a little disappointed.

The monkeys that came out were all very skinny. However, they looked very cute while eating and they didn't grab anything from people.

But be careful when teasing monkeys, just don't annoy them.

By On the road |

The original wooden plank road and cable bridge in the monkey area have been closed and unused. I remember that we were swinging on the cable bridge when we came here 13 years ago.

By l Kezi |

On January 18, 2018, my family visited Mount Emei Scenic Area. We walked from Leidongping on the cleared snow and ice plank road and passed by here. I guess the monkeys were full and strolling down the mountain; there were no monkeys begging for food.

By Runaway Youth |

That’s enough! 😡 A face full of food, but a heart full of joy!

By threezhang |

There are a large number of monkeys in the ecological monkey area. Visitors should not hold food in their hands, as the monkeys may attack people sometimes.

By Travel thousands of miles |

When you go to the monkey area, be sure to carry your bag in front of your chest and don't rummage through it in front of the monkeys. Don't scream too loudly.

By Beibei's Atlas |

Ecological monkey area: 🐒, it is actually a wild monkey, a Tibetan macaque, with a clear brown color, a short tail and a big body. I think its fur is also very thick. It grows in the mountains, so it must be big and have thick fur to keep warm.

By Yu Ge |

We didn't walk far because there were fewer tourists. We didn't even see anyone selling small bags of monkey food (5 yuan a bag, I recommend not buying it). For safety reasons, we walked for a while and then turned back. Monkeys are wild after all, with sharp teeth, so they are not to be trifled with. On the way, we saw a little girl being bitten by a monkey. Her cries could be heard throughout the valley. I hope she is okay.

By Seven sides |

If you want to see monkeys, please go to Emei Mountain in the morning, or hike up the mountain, you will definitely see monkeys. In the afternoon during peak season, there are too many people, and monkeys don't want to see people.

By Small melon |

I strongly recommend that you don't go there. I walked for more than two hours and only saw a few monkeys from a distance. The administrators didn't let the monkeys come over and often shot them with slingshots. The relationship between humans and nature was very disharmonious.

By Uncle Zhou |

Don't step on the wild flowers on the roadside, don't tease the wild monkeys on the roadside

By Ming Sun and Moon |

The monkeys may seem cute, but they will snatch tourists' bags and drinks.

By Mars User |

The ecological monkey area is a bit far, so if you have the energy and time, it's best to go inside and get up close and personal with the adorable monkeys. Before coming here, I heard the monkeys in Mount Emei are quite feral, and walking around the area was a bit daunting. I instinctively put away my phone and clutched my backpack, fearing they might attack me. But the monkeys are actually quite adorable, especially those sparkling eyes.

By Mu Yichangxi |

Monkeys are everywhere in the Emeishan Ecological Monkey Area. Be careful not to hurt people or steal things. Generally, do not provoke them.

By Trick or Treat Cabbage |

I still have to say that while enjoying the beautiful scenery, you still have to pay attention to safety. These monkeys are wild, some are somewhat aggressive, but they are all very smart and cute!

By Micro-ample and micro-sensation |

To see the monkeys, you need to be patient and go a little deeper.

By Aizi |

The scenery from Yixiantian to the ecological monkey area was beautiful. I didn't see any monkeys along the way, and even after reaching the monkey area, I saw very few monkeys; they were all confined to the suspension bridge. I was terrified on the way there. The guidebook said some monkeys are aggressive and will snatch things from tourists, but sometimes they are! My worries were unnecessary, haha. 😄 Fortunately, I did see monkeys at the Jieyin Temple in Mount Emei. 🐵

By Great Rivers and Oceans |

A major attraction of Mount Emei are the monkeys halfway up the mountain. Perhaps because tourists have spoiled them too much, they've become lawless. They're completely unafraid of humans, and if you're a woman, they might even try to snatch your food. Overall, the monkeys are the only thing worth seeing halfway up Mount Emei.

By Cappuccino |

The monkeys work from 9 to 5, and you can't control their lateness or early departure, so it's hard to see them at the wrong time. But the scenery along this road is superb, with gurgling mountain streams, chirping birds, strange rocks piercing the clouds, and towering ancient trees. Walking among them, you will naturally feel light and healthy.

By Leo Xiao Guozi |

You can't see monkeys during holidays, but people are everywhere. It's 4 kilometers from Wuxiangang parking lot to here. Along the way, I passed Shuangyin Bridge, Qingyin Pavilion, Yitiantian, and great scenery. However, I caught up with a little rain, but it didn't affect my mood. To be honest, there are a lot of monkeys in Malaysia, especially in Langkawi. You can often see them on the roadside, but I wanted to see if there are so many monkeys in Mount Emei. After a long journey, I arrived at the destination. As a result, I estimated that there were only four or five monkeys and one or two hundred people.

By Ninghai Xiaoyaoyao |

The scenery nearby is particularly beautiful. If you want to see monkeys, be sure not to bring plastic bags, wear brightly colored clothes, or search your pockets. Don't make eye contact with the monkeys! Monkeys can be bad-tempered and will snatch things away, so pack up your valuables in advance or you'll lose them. The monkeys go home in the afternoon, so it's best to go early if you want to see them.

By RIOrange Lu Feng |

Monkeys are really great. They are not afraid of people at all, but many people are afraid of monkeys.

By SHARPE |

I have to say that the monkeys here are really wild, and there is no excitement at all as I imagined seeing monkeys.

By Chubby |

While it's perfectly fine to visit Mount Emei to see monkeys, if they're running around, it can be frightening, especially for girls with bags. At Yixiantian, we saw staff holding slingshots, on high alert. We also saw staff holding safety sticks at the exit of the monkey area—all to prevent monkeys from appearing where they shouldn't be.

By lovers gray |

Monkey King is really super smart. He loves to eat and also loves to grab things from other people. But he is not that scary. He will not hurt others maliciously. He is just more interested in the food in your hand.

By Mr. Nice Guy |

Time problem, it takes six or seven kilometers to go to see the monkeys and come back, which is very tiring. In the end, I saw a few monkeys late.

By Safina |

It is best to prepare some food before going up the mountain to prevent monkeys from blocking the way and asking for it. There are a lot of "staff" in the monkey area who sell monkey food. It seems that they control the monkeys' diet reasonably, but in fact they want you to buy more. The more they sell, the happier they are. As a result, these poor monkeys are overfed and have a single nutritional diet. They are so fat that you would think they have encountered a brown bear if you saw them from behind. Remember not to take the initiative to attack the monkeys. If you are offended, the monkeys may attack tourists.

By It is nothing |

Just the night before, I was still reading guides for the ecological monkey area. Although I read a lot of guides, I was still careless and put half a bottle of water on the side of my backpack. Then the monkey saw it, snatched it away, and unscrewed the bottle cap with his teeth and started drinking.

By Cai Cai |

When you see this sign, you are almost entering the monkey area. As the name suggests, there are many monkeys here, but you still need to pay attention to safety.

By Hui Niyu |

The little monkeys are very cute, they are not afraid of people and will even reach out for food

By Dusk, Beauty |

The scenery in the monkey area is really beautiful. It’s a pity that it was raining when we came. We passed by the famous monkey area but didn’t see a single monkey. It seemed a bit regrettable.

By Sister Ya |

This is a monkey sanctuary. Specialized personnel are responsible for managing, caring for, and keeping an eye on the monkeys. The monkeys are not afraid of people and are very human-like.

By I chase the sun |

You will definitely encounter monkeys in Mount Emei, and the little squirrels will also bring you surprises. However, be careful to keep the food safe and don't tease them intentionally.

By Peach Fairy |

A few steps further up the Yixiantian Trail is the Ecological Monkey Area, home to the largest concentration of monkeys on Mount Emei and the largest natural wild monkey area in China. As you continue forward, you'll see a rope bridge on your left leading to the area, where monkeys sit, ready to rob visitors. If you're afraid of monkeys, you can skip the area, but the hike is long and you're sure to encounter monkeys.

We didn't go in because we were afraid of monkeys.

Tips: There are monkey food sold in the monkey area, 5 yuan a bag, which is actually peanuts, and it is not recommended to buy.

By Blueberry |

I've long heard how aggressive the monkeys of Mount Emei are. Tourists must avoid holding things like plastic bags, or else the monkeys will mistake them for food and snatch them away. Thankfully, I haven't encountered any monkey attacks or scratches, but I'm puzzled. There are many small stalls along the mountain selling snacks like corn and steamed buns, so why don't the monkeys snatch them? Do the monkeys here recognize humans? Don't they eat grass near their own nests? I think so.

By carving |

The tour guide was very good~~ and also very scary. He said there were a lot of monkeys and I should be careful not to get scratched... I climbed the mountain for a long time and only saw 4... Many people went back that day without seeing any monkeys~~ Maybe we were unlucky~~🙈

By Summer |

I didn't see any monkeys. I've been to Mount Emei numerous times, but this is the first time I haven't seen any. The monkeys work from 9 to 5, but they only work in the mornings. I saw a few distant monkeys, which I call "artistic monkeys." My September 2016 Mount Emei travelogue: http://www.mafengwo.cn/i/5698523.html. Lots of beautiful photos, including a super practical itinerary. Check it out! :)

By Yunyunwiny |

In fact, the monkeys are really spoiled by tourists. Don't show them any plastic. They will grab it.

By Rainforest snails |

The Emeishan Ecological Monkey Sanctuary, located in a narrow valley between Qingyin Pavilion, Yixiantian, and Hongchunping, covers 25 hectares and is currently the largest natural ecological monkey sanctuary in my country. Three families of wild monkeys are currently housed within the sanctuary, totaling over 300 individuals.

The monkeys of Mount Emei are the spirits of the mountain. Playful, adorable, and remarkably human, they are unfazed by people, friendly, and engaging, bringing countless joys to visitors and becoming a living spectacle. Playing with and feeding the monkeys, observing their diverse behavior, learning about their ecological habits, and engaging in close encounters with them are essential activities for visitors to Mount Emei.

The Tibetan macaque, a large, brown-green monkey with a short tail, is a nationally protected species. Also known as the Sichuan short-tailed macaque, the big green macaque, and the short-tailed macaque, it lives on a renowned Buddhist mountain and is nicknamed the "Monkey Layman." In the wild, these monkeys feed on leaves, flowers, and fruit. Three families of these monkeys exist within the Emei Mountain area, totaling approximately 300 individuals.

This is all hearsay. It rained heavily the night before our visit, and we didn't see any monkeys until 10:30 the next day. I'll leave it for next time.

By _Manny |

You have to walk! After reaching the sign for the monkey area, you have to walk up for another half an hour to see these cute monkeys. These monkeys are all wild and free-range, so they have a certain wildness, but they are not afraid of people at all after being in contact with tourists for a long time. They are very close to people and especially like to search tourists' bags for food.

By Falling leaves without wind |

I can only say that this monkey is really wild and clever. He knows how to scare tourists and then find food from the things dropped by tourists. He will also deliberately attack people. So in the end, he found a bamboo pole in advance to attack you, hit you with it, and then leave immediately.

By Afterglow |

If there are too many monkeys, and they are disobedient and even rush to grab things, it will no longer be fun...

By missangw |

Wild monkeys are indeed cute but they are very naughty. They snatched our bags and opened them to find food. After that, I became a little afraid of them. Friendly tips: If you encounter monkeys, don't take pictures at close range. Don't wear too bright clothes, as they will easily attract the monkeys' attention. It is best to travel with a group~~

By Mountains, seas, deserts |

We went too early, there were no monkeys, and the bridge was closed.

By Shi Xiaonvyy |

The monkeys were all full when I went there, so I didn't see many of them.

By Lisa's daughter |

Monkeys are really wild and a bit scary. Try not to wear red clothes, otherwise you will be easily targeted by monkeys.

By confused |

This is China's largest wild monkey sanctuary. The monkeys are incredibly aggressive and fearless, actively seeking out people to play with them. They'll even carry sticks and demand food from the roadside, creating a vibrant spectacle of Mount Emei. The ecological monkey area is located near the "One Line Sky" formation below Hongchunping and above Qingyin Pavilion. When observing and admiring the monkeys, maintain a safe distance. If you encounter monkeys blocking the path and demanding food, don't startle or run. Bringing a slingshot is highly recommended, and at the very least, a stick is recommended for self-defense.

By Tina Zhuojun |

I've always heard that the monkeys in Mount Emei are not to be trifled with, but at first I didn't think much of it. I just saw them walking around and drinking from their water bottles. Gradually, their true nature began to unleash, and I was no exception; my bag was opened and searched thoroughly. Fortunately, no one was hurt, but fellow visitors, please be careful!

By Saab X55 |

I visited once in 2006, and the mountain was teeming with monkeys. I was terrified of being stopped and "robbed." I went again in 2016, during a heavy snowfall. I had no idea where the monkeys had gone, but I could vaguely see them. Some roads had been built, and it felt easier to walk.

By perfect love |

I was robbed by a wild monkey on the way, and I've heard so many reports of robberies in monkey habitats along the way that I'm afraid to go. If you get bitten or scratched, you'll have to get vaccinated. Forget it, I'm not going to see it.
