Shuimo Ancient Town

To be honest, I've never been particularly fond of ancient towns. Having visited many in China, most of them looked very much the same, and Shuimo Ancient Town is no exception. However, compared to other ancient towns, Shuimo has its own unique characteristics. The entire town is very spacious, unlike other famous ancient towns where the streets are crowded with people. Coupled with the lack of tourists, it's perfect for a leisurely stroll. Furthermore, Shuimo's location next to Shouxi River, a tributary of the Minjiang River, combined with the clear blue sky, adds a touch of beautiful natural scenery!

Taken yesterday, no filter! It started raining right after I arrived at Shuimo Ancient Town, but it stopped after about half an hour. Walking through this ancient town, I was reminded of a line from a song: "The sky is azure, waiting for the misty rain, and I'm waiting for you!" There were people touting for accommodation at the entrance, around 100 yuan per room, probably cheaper during the off-season. There weren't many shops open in the entire town, so we just wandered around and took some photos. The town is divided into two streets. One side is the normal ancient road with a school and a Wanniantai (Wannian Terrace). The other side has miniature buildings that reflect the characteristics of several counties, including Songzhou and Ma'erkang. It's quite nice. Besides being sparsely populated and having little to eat, it's still a quiet place to spend half a day!

In Shuimo Ancient Town, you can experience a slower pace of life, and of course it also has a strong Tibetan and Qiang style. The ancient town is not very big and can be visited in 1-2 hours. It is recommended to visit Renji Ximu Valley next to the ancient town, where you can enjoy the flowers all over the mountains, go hiking, and if you are tired, you can stay in a very elegant B&B hotel at the entrance of the Flower Valley: Shuimo Manor, which has a very high appearance and the accommodation conditions are among the best in the Shuimo area. It is also rated as the most beautiful B&B hotel in Wenchuan, which is definitely worth experiencing.

Shuimo Ancient Town is 76 kilometers from Chengdu, 25 kilometers from Dujiangyan City, and 19 kilometers from Yingxiu. It stands as a shining pearl nestled between Dujiangyan, Qingcheng Mountain, the Wolong Giant Panda Sanctuary, Jiuzhaigou, and Huanglong Valley. It is considered a World Earthquake Heritage Site within the World Heritage complex. With its advantageous tourism location, it is known as a "relaxation resort on the western Sichuan plateau" and a "famous town of Western Qiang culture." In 2010, Shuimo Ancient Town was recognized as a "Global Best Practice in Post-Disaster Reconstruction" by the Global Forum on Human Settlements and UN-HABITAT's Global Best Practices magazine. It was also awarded the title of "China's Best Cultural Tourism Scenic Spot" by the organizing committee of the Third World Cultural Tourism Forum.

Away from the hustle and bustle, it's peaceful and tranquil. From Dujiangyan, heading towards Wenchuan, the road splits at Zipingpu Reservoir, a two-hour walk and scenic vistas. I took my family there for a weekend in 2016. The air was fresh and the scenery was unique. The nights were beautiful, and strolling along the river with my family and DSLR was truly relaxing. Local dining and accommodation options are excellent, with hotels and farmhouses to choose from. It's not far from the Three Rivers Source, so you can also visit it. A must-stay for a few days to soak in the mountain atmosphere.

It's similar to other ancient towns in Sichuan, but walking through it creates a sense of tranquility. The town's main specialties are bacon and tofu pudding, with the bacon being smoked, making it rich but not greasy.

The Shuimo Ancient Town, which was rebuilt after the earthquake, not only retains the original style of the ancient town, but also adds a lot of new content, making it more attractive to watch.

Located on the banks of Shouxi River, a tributary of the Minjiang River in the south of Wenchuan County, Sichuan Province, it has enjoyed the reputation of "Longevity Town" as early as the Shang Dynasty. It was then called the Elderly Village and later changed its name to Shuimo.

Shuimo Ancient Town, once a gathering place for Qiang people, was razed to the ground by the Wenchuan earthquake. The current town was rebuilt after 2008. It's divided into three districts: Chanshou Old Street, Shouxi Lake, and Qiang City. We spent a day relaxing in the town. The fish hotpot and skewers hotpot are highly recommended. Both are buffet-style, with prices ranging from 25 yuan per person to 38 yuan per person. The food was delicious and filling.

The Shuimo Ancient Town, rebuilt after the disaster, reveals the commercial atmosphere that every tourist attraction should have: neat pedestrian streets, scattered vendors, and similar goods. All of this tells me that this is a newly built commercial district.

That time, we realized that death can be like this, piece by piece, and we can never come back.

That time, we finally understood that compared to death, living may be more difficult.



Now, 3,650 days and nights have passed. Each of us has moved on to a different life. The pain and tears we once felt have long since been drowned in the trivialities and struggles of life. And so, we have once again become numb and yearning, restless and deformed, unable to coexist in a shared reality.

Ten years later, on May 12, 2018, that collective memory was awakened once again, and the disaster once again erased everything else and became a common symbol for everyone.

So, we all want to ask from the bottom of our hearts:

It’s been ten years, Wenchuan, how are you?

I ran the 5.13 Wenchuan Marathon and was lucky enough to stay in Shuimo for two nights. Shuimo was incredibly charming in the evening, but unfortunately many tourists left by bus before dark. In the evening, many young people were dancing in the square, a great place to escape the hustle and bustle. Unfortunately, my foot injury prevented me from enjoying the event. The race took place in such a beautiful location, with many people cheering on both sides of the track. I didn't feel any soreness after the run, and I was so excited I couldn't sleep. I took a long walk along the river that evening, and I walked over 47,000 steps that day. 😄 The toffee they sell there is delicious.

It's a place to escape the summer heat. There's nothing beautiful about the scenery. You can actually go to Sanjiang inside to have fun.

The road was bumpy and my desire was reduced to normal when I arrived at the destination, but there were still many tourists.

On the way back to Chengdu from Wenchuan, I stopped by Shuimo Ancient Town. Along the way, heading towards Yingxiu, I could see traces of roads destroyed by the earthquake and landslides. The road conditions from Wenchuan were poor, with many areas under construction. From Shuimo Ancient Town to Chengdu, the road was in good condition, with the highway running smoothly. As for the ancient town, it sold standard national trinkets interspersed with local specialties. I ate tofu pudding rice, took tourist photos, and even paid 1 yuan for the restroom! But the cured meat in the ancient town was truly delicious, especially the cured pig's trotter soup, served with a few cold dishes. It was so refreshing...

It is not far from Dujiangyan, and it is very convenient to drive or catch a bus. The ancient town is not big.

Shuimo Ancient Town is nice and it's also good to go there for fun. We went to Yingxiu. It would be better if we could stay there.

It's average, not very special, but the bacon is delicious.

Apart from some Tibetan and Qiang characteristics in the buildings (built with aid from Guangdong after the earthquake), there are no other special features. Why go so far!

I originally planned to go to Zhaogong Mountain, but ended up going to Shuimo Ancient Town. Maybe it was the off-season, so there were very few people, but it was very pleasant. If you go there, you can take the high-speed rail from Xipu and then transfer to a bus.

A relatively large town where Han and Qiang cultures coexist. It is home to Aba Teachers College, is connected by mountains and rivers, and has a developed business.

If you haven't been there, I highly recommend it. But if you've been there, it's just like that! I went there twice. It's halfway up the mountain and has a strong Qiang style.

The water mill gives people a good feeling. There were not many people when I went there, so the commercial atmosphere did not feel so strong. However, it is only suitable for a one-day trip and you can't play there for long.

The weather is nice, so I can go for a walk. But my phone fell.

Sichuan 5A scenic spot, the scenery is still good

It's ok, it's still that big, and there's a specialty of tofu skin, which is like soap and tastes okay!

Shuimo Ancient Town is a replica of an ancient street rebuilt after the 5.12 Wenchuan earthquake. It's divided into two streets: the lower street, dominated by Tibetan-Qiang style buildings, and the upper street, which is home to Han Chinese dwellings. Shuimo Ancient Town offers a lot to see and eat. Every May, when cherries are in season, a market opens at the entrance to the upper street, where local growers sell their delicious cherries at reasonable prices, cheaper than in the city.

Why do all the newly built ancient towns look the same? They have lost their own unique characteristics.

Previously unknown, it gained prominence after the Wenchuan earthquake. It has the feel of a Qiang village, but in recent years, traces of human activity have become more apparent. In short, just as the phoenix remains beautiful but no longer resembles the landscape depicted in Shen Congwen's "Border Town," the water mill is no longer what it once was.

Over and over again over and over again over and over again

This is one of the most interesting ancient towns I've visited. There were fewer people there on Friday. Prices are low and the locals are very nice.

The newly built Qiangzhai Ancient Town, built at great expense after the earthquake, has also been heavily promoted. Chadianzi is easily accessible by bus and often joins Yingxiu as a day trip destination. It's pleasant to stroll around and take photos. However, the offerings are similar to those in other ancient towns, with few local specialties. There's also no real historical heritage.

I went there with my friends by chance. The ancient town is quite unique and worth a visit.

It's okay to play on the weekend, but it lacks characteristics overall. The post-disaster reconstruction project can be supported.

It is the same as many ancient towns around Chengdu. The only difference is that there are many exhibition halls of different counties in Aba Prefecture, each with different styles. You can go and have a look.

Shuimo is actually only about 30 kilometers away from Dujiangyan. After the Wenchuan earthquake, it was basically built into a bridgehead to showcase the ethnic customs of Aba to the outside world. Here you can visit the concentrated characteristic displays of each county in Aba. It is a typical holiday destination that integrates traditional ancient towns and Tibetan and Qiang customs.

The ancient town is in Tibetan and Qiang style, but most of the buildings are newly built, suitable for a day trip.

The city of Foshan rebuilt the square after the earthquake, which has a strong local flavor and has also added some Foshan characteristics, such as Feihong Square. It may be due to the high altitude, it feels a bit cold, and the surrounding mountains and rivers are also magnificent.
