Huangyaguan Great Wall

Located in the north of Ji County, it is an important pass of the Jizhen Great Wall in the Ming Dynasty and the only pass in the county.
The rocks on the east side of the cliff are mostly yellow-brown. Under the setting sun, they look golden and magnificent. It is known as the "Yellow Cliff in the Evening Sun", and the city wall got its name from this.
From the ancient sentry tower at Huangya Tianti to the Three Boundaries Monument, the area preserves the original Northern Qi Dynasty border wall, Ming Dynasty mountain walls, nearly complete pavilions, sentry towers, beacon towers, parapets, etc.

I drove to Huangyaguan on April 13th and found it rather ordinary and overly commercial. The parking lot charged 10 yuan, and people kept trying to sell me private cars to take me to the top. No staff tried to stop me, so I just bought a ticket and went in. The courtyards and eight trigrams formations at the entrance were all later constructions, so the only benefit was that they were less crowded. Once outside, there were a bunch of farmhouses trying to attract customers, which was really annoying. It feels like all the tourist attractions in Jixian are the same, with no other purpose but to make money. Not recommended!

The "Jibei Xiongguan" archway in front of the main gate is the cover shot on various postcards. First walk around the city wall to see the towering mountains and the main tower of Huangyaguan. Qi Jiguang, a famous general in the Ming Dynasty, once guarded this place. A small stream flows under the tower and has never dried up for hundreds of years. The bronze cannon on the wall made a circle around the city wall and began to head up the mountain. When you start to climb the mountain, you can see parts of the Great Wall that have not been opened to the public to this day on the distant ridge. The continuous Great Wall is built on a steep ridge. It is too dangerous to climb up. It makes you sigh at the difficulties that the ancients overcame to build it. The small stairs on the second floor of the beacon tower are steep and narrow, and you have to use your hands and feet to get up. The valley in the distance is in full view

Huangyaguan currently has only one route open to tourists. It's not very long, but the slope is very steep. You could have gone up to a beacon tower, but the steps on the wall get steeper and steeper, making it too difficult for children.

Huangyaguan Great Wall, located north of Jixian County, was originally built during the Northern Qi Dynasty, rebuilt during the Ming Dynasty, and renovated again in the 1980s. This section of the Great Wall, built on a mountain ridge, features a rich variety of elements, including walls, watchtowers, beacon towers, Bagua City, and a water gate, offering a high level of playfulness.

Huangyaguan Great Wall is located in Jixian County, Tianjin, 20 kilometers past Pinggu! I bought tickets online in advance. Since I was traveling with both elderly and children, I decided to take the scenic electric car to Taipingzhai, the top of the Huangyaguan Great Wall, and then walk back. This way, I could avoid backtracking. It turned out to be a good choice! The electric car at the ticket office costs 30 yuan per person, and anyone over 1.2 meters tall is charged. There were seven of us in our group! The electric car took us all the way up the mountain, passing many farmhouses. It took about 15 minutes to reach the summit! After passing the ticket gate, we ascended the Great Wall. If we were to ascend from the bottom, we would have had to climb a long way to reach the Great Wall, so this was a much easier journey! Besides, the one-way trip takes about two hours, so for those of us with families and non-hikers, it was better to be conservative!

Huangyaguan is quite dangerous, with many straight up and down stairs and some later built stone paths. My two children have been hiking every week recently, and after a period of exercise, they can complete the whole journey by themselves!

There are two options for entering the scenic area. We took the Huangya Ladder and the other team took the Taipingzhai direction, which is said to be steeper. A reminder for everyone to be careful when traveling! The only drawback is that the sky is not clear enough, without the blue sky and white clouds, but who cares? Standing on the city wall, you can see the stream, the flowing water, the small bridge, the RV, etc. Continuing to climb up is the Taipingzhai direction.

The Great Wall is not very long. There is a section that was built later as a decoration for viewing from a distance! There are also two caves in the Eight Immortals Cave, and the caves are not long.

Tianjin Blank Space

With my Aquarius-like, expansive mindset, I usually write about any place I want to explore. But when it comes to Tianjin, even though my favorite actor, Feng Gong, is from Tianjin, and even though my last name is Chen, I really don't have much to say. I truly admire those who can write such lengthy travelogues about Tianjin. I've been to Tianjin over 30 times, but sadly, I can't find a single photo that I feel truly represents the city. This is especially true for me, a Shanghai native. The height of the Tianjin Eye is to Lujiazui, the nightscape of the Haihe River is to the Huangpu River, the charm of the Five Avenues is to the Bund, and the flavor of Goubuli steamed buns is to Xiaolongbao (small soup dumplings). Ultimately, it's like a Xiali to a Santana.

After much deliberation, I finally chose the Great Wall at Zhanghuangyaguan, although Jixian County is closer to Beijing.

It is still worth a visit. It is neither too cold nor too hot in this season and there are not many tourists. It is recommended to find a farmhouse at the foot of the mountain and ask the owner to buy the ticket, which is also cheaper. The Great Wall is divided into two sections by a road with a large slope. After climbing, there will be obvious soreness in the lower body including the hips the next day. The most worthwhile place to visit is the Huangya Ladder, which has more than 300 steps. Persistence is victory. The higher you go, the more expensive the water is. It is recommended to prepare drinking water at the foot of the mountain. It is worth a visit and recommended.

The service in the scenic area is pretty good, but the scenery is greatly reduced due to the smog. I will go there again when the weather is good next time.

Although we arrived at 10:30 am on a weekend, the parking lot wasn't crowded, with plenty of spaces. Parking is 10 yuan, unlimited. Admission: 65 yuan per person for adults, 35 yuan per person for seniors, and 5 yuan per person for insurance. Electric carts are available to take you to Taipingzhai, on the east side of the Great Wall, and then down. We chose to climb up and conquer it, then take the cart back to the main gate. Directly opposite the entrance to the Forest of Steles is a sign indicating the entrance to the Great Wall. As you ascend and advance until you reach your limit, you can choose to head west or east. The west side of the Great Wall is shorter, while the east side is longer and more challenging. Huangyaguan, the heart of the Great Wall, is where we chose to head east. The climb from the foot of the Great Wall to the watchtower at the top of the first hill was the most tiring and demanding. Once you reach Taipingzhai, you can take the electric cart down the mountain. The cart costs 20 yuan per person and takes you directly to the parking lot.

The Great Wall, which was originally very good, was ruined by the extremely poor management. The Great Wall itself was not damaged much, and the brick and stone beacon towers were intact, but there were vendors near each beacon tower, and the trash cans were full. There were many illegal vehicles and vendors, and a forced market was set up at the exit. The Great Wall was very dirty and smelled all kinds of

A good place to climb the Great Wall, with few people and beautiful scenery.

The entrance fee is 65 yuan, insurance is 5 yuan, and the sightseeing bus is 30 yuan to the entrance of Taipingzhai. Entering the Great Wall from Taipingzhai is not very crowded. The Great Wall follows the undulating terrain, with mostly ups and downs, making the climb easy and avoiding backtracking. Some places have slightly steeper slopes and no formal steps, so be aware. I walked for over two hours each way, which is considered slow. It was much less crowded than at Badaling, and I had a great time. Although the Great Wall inside and outside was not green at that time, it still had its own unique beauty.

This section of the Ming Great Wall is located in Tianjin. Located in Jixian County, Tianjin's "back garden," the area boasts steep mountains and beautiful scenery, making it a popular tourist destination. Especially in late autumn, when the mountains are covered in crimson leaves and colorful trees, it's a perfect spot for photography.

By Mo Xiaoyan |

It is very majestic and the area is very large. Don't take the black cars that solicit passengers to go up the mountain. There are some places they can't go to.

I'd long heard that Ji County's mountains and rivers were beautiful, so during the Dragon Boat Festival holiday, I took my family on a two-day trip to Ji County. A friend recommended Huangyaguan Great Wall as a great place for a relaxing vacation, so we chose it as our first stop. I heard that Huangyaguan was originally built during the Northern Qi Dynasty, and that Qi Jiguang later stationed there for many years, so I still longed to visit it.

We set off early in the morning on June 10th. When we arrived at Huangyaguan, it wasn't crowded. Luckily, the staff gave us some Huangyaguan Great Wall scenery playing cards—they said it was a little gift for the Dragon Boat Festival! The morning weather was incredibly cool, and the fresh mountain air was something you couldn't get in the city. It really lifted my spirits.

We took a sightseeing bus to the top of the Great Wall. The sightseeing bus at Huangyaguan is very cute. It is a mini bus with air conditioning. It took more than 10 minutes to reach Taipingzhai while enjoying the scenery. I personally suggest that it is better to take the sightseeing bus to the top and then climb down. You can see the ancient Great Wall and the famous Qi Jiguang stone statue and the Widow's Tower. The most important thing is that it saves a lot of energy.

The scenery at Huangyaguan Great Wall is stunning. It rained last night, and the mist shrouded the wall, creating a fairyland-like atmosphere. Unlike the bustling Badaling, it's not crowded here, so you don't have to worry about your selfies being filled with other people. It's also incredibly clean. I think a scenic spot's sanitation truly reflects the care and attention of its management. I've been to many scenic spots, and I never recommend anyone with poor sanitation.

I have to admit, Huangyaguan Pass is quite treacherous. After passing a circular watchtower, everyone was exhausted. We found a shady spot to rest, took out the poker cards the staff had given us that morning, and played a few rounds of Landlord. The cool mountain breeze was so relaxing! In summary, the scenery at Huangyaguan Great Wall is beautiful, both majestic and precipitous. It's quiet and uncrowded. The parking lot is well-organized, and the staff are friendly—I never saw any rude faces. Most importantly, it's spotlessly clean, which I was very pleased with. There are also some drawbacks. Before entering the parking lot, a group of locals surrounded us, asking for food and accommodation, and asking for photos on horseback. The most annoying thing was the illegal taxi drivers, who chattered nonstop. I even saw their vehicles: they were all small vans, crammed with people for profit, some even sitting on small stools. They lacked proper operating permits, so it's hard to believe they have any safety guarantees.

When I bought my ticket, I asked the staff why the scenic area didn't regulate so many illegal taxis. The staff seemed frustrated, explaining, "Of course, there's no regulation." The scenic area has a dedicated integrated management team that works hard to address these illegal operations, but the scenic area lacks enforcement power and can only discourage them, not enforce them. This is incredibly frustrating. I'd like to know which department is responsible for illegal operations like taxis and horseback riding around the scenic area. Such a beautiful scenic area shouldn't be ruined by these shady solicitations. Jixian County has seen a boom in tourism in recent years, and I sincerely hope my hometown's tourism prospects continue to improve.

There is a very special section, which is made of stone instead of city wall bricks. It is a bit uncomfortable for your feet, but not very steep. However, if you climb all of it, you will still be very tired!

When ethnic minorities took control of the Central Plains, new ethnic minorities would emerge in their homelands. They would then build the Great Wall like the Han people to keep them out.

I went the day after May Day holiday, and traffic was still very congested from the train station. You had to drive to Limutai first and then back up. Overall, the steps at the Great Wall are a bit high, and the Huangya Ladder is very steep, unlike Mutianyu. There were also toilets inside each beacon tower. Could this be related to the lack of restrooms?

The Huangyaguan Great Wall extends southwest, passing through the village of Qianganjian in Xiaying Town. The village is nestled in a valley, where verdant pines and cypresses crisscross the mountainside, creating an evergreen landscape. Ascending along a path behind the houses, the ancient stone wall winds its way along the mountainside, its ruins visible. A beacon tower (although it's suspected, only the tower remains) displays the boundary markers for Tianjin, Beijing, and Hebei. Standing on a Tianjin mobile phone on the Beijing or Hebei side will result in a welcome text message from either Beijing or Hebei. With no entrance fee, this area attracts numerous hiking enthusiasts from around the world. Behind the village lies a cave, where it's said the light is the Pinggu Valley in Beijing. The villagers are friendly and welcoming, and there are farmhouses available for accommodation.

I bought a ticket and was told I could take a bus up, but I was too lazy to climb, so I bought a ticket for an electric car. It turns out I still have to climb even after reaching the back gate. With my kids, I didn't climb for long before we got down. I threw away my ticket. I wanted to take a photo of the front as a souvenir, but I couldn't enter without a ticket, o(╯□╰)o~ Future visitors, please enter through the main gate. Located in the Huangyaguan area, 30 kilometers north of Jixian County, the 41-kilometer Great Wall was first built in 557 AD during the Northern Qi Dynasty. When Qi Jiguang, a famous Ming Dynasty general, was appointed commander-in-chief of Jizhou, he redesigned the original Great Wall and renovated it with bricks. In 1984, a section stretching approximately 3,025 meters, from Banlagang Mountain in the east to Wangchangjing Mountain in the west, was restored. It's a World Cultural Heritage site and one of the first national 4A-level scenic spots.

By The Young Master is Unparalleled |

It is not as majestic as Badaling. Some places are already broken, but it looks more real and ancient. The terrain is very dangerous and ups and downs. It is very long and there are not many tourists. This is the original ecology of the Great Wall. It feels much better than Badaling to truly experience the Great Wall.

By Small building |

Most people who visit Huangyaguan Great Wall are self-driving tourists from Tianjin. This was my second time there. Because it was National Day, there were so many private cars visiting the area that a long line formed on Provincial Highway S101. The 20-kilometer journey took almost two hours. There are many farmhouse restaurants here, and during the National Day holiday, the price range is between 100-150 yuan per day, including accommodation and three meals. I recommend walking 1 kilometer north past the Huangyaguan scenic area entrance and entering the first restaurant outside the Hebei Pass. After comparing, I think this one is cheaper. Last year, it was 80 yuan, but this year it's 100 yuan. Children can enter free, and the food is good. There are 10 tables at noon and 9 at night, with chicken, duck, fish, and meat. Speaking of the Great Wall, there are two sections of Huangyaguan Great Wall: one on the left and one on the right after entering the scenic area. The entrance fee is 50 yuan (insurance is optional), and you can visit both sections. If you're in good physical condition, I recommend visiting the left section first, then returning the same way to visit the right section. After the right section, you can take a bus directly out of the scenic area and down the mountain (the scenic area bus is 30 yuan). I recommend avoiding the scenic area bus; there are many vans outside the scenic area gate, priced at 10 yuan per person. If you're lucky, you can bargain if it's crowded. When buying your tickets, they strongly recommend taking the bus up. The fare seems to be around 85 yuan, but I didn't ask specifically. You can choose based on your physical fitness. If you prefer to climb on your own, you can buy a walking ticket for 50 yuan. There are also many private companies outside the scenic area that will park you for free and drive you up. I don't know the exact price, so ask around and compare; it's probably cheaper than buying a scenic area pass. The left section takes about 2 hours round trip, and the right section takes 2 hours one-way. The right section is longer and steeper. Since you're climbing the Great Wall anyway, I don't think taking a bus to the top of the right section and then walking down is fun; it's better to go the hard way. The scenery is quite nice and worth a visit. Crowds are acceptable during the National Day holiday.

The Great Wall? Everyone knows it, it’s great!

There is a parking lot at the foot of the mountain, which is a bit far from the entrance of Taiping Village. According to my physical strength, I probably can't climb the Great Wall after climbing that section of the mountain road. It would be cheaper to find a car from a farmhouse, and it would be more expensive to find a car by myself.

By Mingmei |

We visited during May 1st, so the attraction was quite crowded. The distance from the entrance to Huangyaguan Great Wall was quite a distance, and the climb was uphill. We decided to hire a van from the entrance to take us to Taipingzhai. From Taipingzhai, we entered the scenic area and began our climb! The entire climb took about two hours, with frequent stops and photos. It's a strenuous endeavor! There was a particularly steep section of stone stairs, and even a short section without handrails. But we persevered and made it to the finish line, exhausted and leg-shaking! Despite the fatigue, we were able to take in the magnificent sight of the Great Wall. Even though we're used to seeing alpine lakes, Huangyaguan Great Wall felt uniquely beautiful!

The scenery is good. The surrounding environment is relatively clean. However, there is no luggage storage service at the scenic spot. It is a bit inadequate.

By Fantasy Mask |

Instead of going to the crowded Badaling in Beijing... it's better to go to Huangyaguan. There are very few tourists, so you can experience the feeling of having the Great Wall to yourself... If you are still physically fit, I recommend walking forward from the Taipingzhai gate at the back. It's a two-hour walk, which is not very far... The scenery along the way is spectacular... Of course, remember to bring plenty of drinking water and snacks...

By Angel Amelia |

First climb the built-up tower, not the ancient Great Wall. The entrance is completely a later-built tower. Unless you have good physical strength, it is not recommended to climb. The service at the gate is not good either.

Huangyaguan Great Wall is located in the mountains 30 kilometers north of Jixian County. Historically, Jizhou City had a total of 18 defense towers, Huangyaguan being one of them and the most important pass.

The Huangyaguan Great Wall from Taiping Village is very primitive and requires some physical strength, but it feels very good. Standing on the beacon tower, you will feel that you are not a true man if you have not climbed the Great Wall.

Huangyaguan is located in Jixian County, Tianjin. The ticket price is 60 yuan, and the online group purchase price is 45. It is very convenient to exchange tickets and you can book in advance.

We went there during the Qingming Festival. It wasn't crowded for a short holiday. From the parking lot, we could see people from Tianjin, Hebei, and Beijing.

The mountain was still relatively bare during the Qingming Festival, with only the beginnings of green emerging.

There are two directions to climb the Great Wall. If you are in good physical condition, you can consider entering from Ping'an Village and going all the way back to Huangya Main Pass. This way you don't have to go back. If you enter from the main pass, the Great Wall on the left and right sides is Ping'an Village on the right and the ancient Qi Great Wall on the left.

Huangyaguan Great Wall, located in Jixian County, Tianjin, is a very different Great Wall from the others I've visited. Because it's located in the county town below, public transportation isn't always easy to reach, so most people drive or join an outdoor tour group. I went with a tour group. Tickets to Huangyaguan Great Wall are 65 yuan, with student IDs offering half-price admission at 35 yuan. At the foot of the wall, vendors sell things like hawthorn slices and pear slices for drinking, which are quite affordable. There are also shops selling water. I feel Huangyaguan Great Wall differs from other Great Walls in its construction materials and style. Before climbing the wall, there's a small model of the Great Wall in a courtyard below, surrounded by stone carvings. Once you enter the scenic area, you'll find it's well-maintained, spacious, and undamaged. As you continue, you'll notice a different kind of Great Wall, resembling a series of white cement-paved stones. It's a unique and memorable sight. Continue straight ahead and you'll reach the famous Huangya Ladder. It's incredibly high and steep, especially in winter when the steps are covered in snow, making the climb quite dangerous. Be cautious when ascending. Once you've reached the Huangya Pass Great Wall scenic area, you'll find yourself outside the area. Further inside, you'll find small mountain roads with steep cliffs. For safety reasons, further exploration is discouraged. Driving directions: Take the Jinji Expressway, turn right at the end, and exit onto the Jixian West Outer Ring Road. Continue straight ahead, then turn left across the railway line to reach Huangya Pass. From Beijing: Beijing - Pinggu - Jinhai Lake - Wangzhuang Bridge - turn left to reach Huangya Pass. Jixian County is becoming increasingly popular, and we encourage visitors to protect the environmental heritage of Huangya Pass.

By I don't want to stop |

The stairs feel so high! I’m so tired!

By I travel at my own ease |

The dense crowds at Badaling Great Wall in Beijing during this year's May Day holiday were truly astonishing, leading tourists to joke, "Going to the Great Wall to see the sea during Golden Week." In contrast, the deserted scene at Huangyaguan better showcased the Great Wall's grandeur.

The Huangyaguan Great Wall, shaded by green and red, has distinct colors and prominent contrasts. It's a pity that the sky was not very blue that day.

We continued along a relatively flat stretch of road, and gradually began to see more tourists. We happened to be alone on this stretch, so we took some photos. The color of this section of the wall is quite unique, unlike the usual gray. I wonder if this is how the "Huang" in Huangyaguan got its name.

From here, the walk continued. Although it was downhill, it wasn't easy. I held onto the wall and trudged down, step by step. Only then did I realize that taking the bus up was a wise decision. The Huangyaguan Great Wall ticket entrance is right in the middle. Walking up and back down from there would be so much ups and downs that it would be really tough on my knees.

By Green green green tea |

I took a suburban bus and told the ticket seller where I'd get off in advance. The ticket office at the scenic area charges a fee for rides, something they generally don't tell outsiders. They also tell you how great the attractions are, but after visiting the Great Wall (about three hours), you don't have the time or energy to explore other attractions because you still have to take the bus back to the city, which doesn't allow for time. Of course, getting a refund for the recommended attractions is not easy.

By Er'er |

I went there during my internship in ancient architecture. I remember it woke us up in bed in the middle of summer. The view is great, but you might need to use all four of your paws near the top. There's supposedly a Bagua formation nearby, a modern artifact, so don't go there.

Huangyaguan is the main pass and passageway between Jixian County and Xinglong County in Hebei Province. It is the only pass in Jixian County. It's named Huangyaguan because the cliffs reflect a thousand golden rays of light at sunset. The pass consists of the main gate, water gate, east and west gates, and beacon towers. The Great Wall itself is quite spectacular and well-maintained. This area is uncrowded, quiet, and offers beautiful scenery. A full tour takes half a day, so bring your own food and drinks.

It seemed like we had the whole wall to ourselves. It was a completely different scene from the collapsed Great Wall in the imperial capital. Very nice.

The Huangyaguan Great Wall is built on the mountain ridge, with the cliff of Banlagang Mountain as a screen and the steep cliff of Wangmaoding Mountain as a support. The Baguaguan City is a maze, and its majestic, dangerous, beautiful and ancient features highlight its characteristics.

Because I was exhausted on the first day, my legs hurt terribly when I climbed the Great Wall on the second day.

The scenery at the Great Wall is stunning. I've visited Badaling twice, and the impression it left on me was of a winding, high path, with some sections quite steep and dangerous. However, this time at Huangyaguan, I felt something completely different: it was truly beautiful. The rolling mountains and the clouds blended seamlessly into one, making me feel like I was in a vast wilderness, very close to the sky... Photos can't do it justice... This section of the ancient Great Wall is said to have been a place where horse teams transported food and equipment in ancient times, allowing tourists to ride down the mountain to the village. I saw horsemen helping several tourists pack their luggage and train their horses. It must have been a unique experience for tourists to whip their own horses down the mountain, but I wouldn't dare to do that. The Huangyaguan Great Wall is very gentle and graceful, blending seamlessly with the surrounding mountains. I personally think it's much more beautiful than Badaling! The gardens and buildings at the main entrance square are so well-organized that it's hard to leave.
