The ancient city of Dali is located at the foot of the beautiful Cangshan Mountain. It was the capital of the ancient Nanzhao Kingdom and the Dali Kingdom.
The streets in the city are arranged in a typical chessboard pattern, and it is the core tourist area of Dali.
The weather in Dali is fine in March and April of the lunar calendar. It is the best time to visit Dali to enjoy the scenery and experience the local customs.
Here, bees can grow flowers and plants, pet cats and dogs, visit small shops, hang out in bars, and enjoy a literary, fashionable and slow life.

I came here with high expectations, but was disappointed. The city is too commercialized, the shops on every street are similar, and the architectural style is not very distinctive. I got bored after walking for a while. I wanted to find the aboriginal area to see how they lived, but I still couldn't see any aboriginals in any corner. Maybe the aboriginals rented out their houses to outsiders to open shops.
Of course, some of the scenery in the ancient city is also pretty good, and it is very beautiful against the backdrop of Cangshan Mountain. In any case, it is a must-visit place when visiting Dali
If Shuanglang is suitable for living (provided you stay in a waterfront room) but not for sightseeing, then Dali Ancient Town is really suitable for sightseeing but not for living. When I first booked accommodation online, I paid special attention to whether the inn was in the ancient town. I always thought that there would be a big difference between the inside and outside of the city. I also wondered if this inn would have a high rooftop terrace, where I could see the roofs of the entire city.
After arriving at the site, both of these assumptions were broken. First, there is almost no difference between the city and the outside. Because the homestay is just outside the four gates of the ancient city, and it is just a step away to enter the city. In addition, there is no need to think about climbing up to see the roofs, because everyone's floor height is about three or four floors, but on the one hand, the houses are built very densely, and on the other hand, some people have to install solar water heaters on the roof even if the house is not very high, so don't imagine the rooftop view. Maybe when there are not many people, you can see some when you climb up to Wuhua Tower.
There are no good ones, and when it comes to the peak tourist season, staying in the city has some disadvantages. Not to mention the large number of tourists, it is also very troublesome to park for self-driving tours. Although there are two or three parking spaces in front of each inn, you have to come back early to grab a spot. In addition, the alleys in the ancient city are narrow, and even if you can park your car, it is very troublesome to get in and out.
If you live outside the city, it is especially recommended to stay outside the South Gate near the distribution center for the direct bus to the scenic area, because it is not far from the ancient city and it is also very convenient to take the direct bus to other attractions.
But it is suitable for sightseeing. Although there are many people during the Spring Festival holiday, it is such a big ancient town and the cultural center of the region. Compared with other ancient towns around, it has many things. There is Wuhua Tower where you can climb up and have a distant view, there are large-scale Confucian Temple and Martial Temple, there is the gurgling water on Honglongjing Street, there is the Marshal Du Wenxiu Mansion which is now the Dali State Museum, and many other historical sites. I didn’t make time to visit it this time, but I can still come back to visit it later.
"I have seen thousands of mountains and rivers in the world, and have measured every inch of land with my feet, but my heart is more attached to the ancient town, which exudes a charming temperament of peace and tranquility at any time and anywhere, as if the hustle and bustle of the outside world has nothing to do with this place. Dali attracts countless people to come here, but behind it is an ancient city known as "the last piece of pure land for daze in Yunnan."
I spent 3 days in Dali this time. It was not the peak season, so there were not many people. It was a rare quiet place. I ate the most distinctive local snacks, bought flowers and many local specialties, and rented an electric smart car to go around the lake. Erhai Lake is still under renovation. The accommodation and catering in Shuanglang Town are closed. Some sections of the road are also under construction. It is not very convenient, but the scenery along the way is still very beautiful and does not affect the fun. Before leaving, I searched online and read other people's guides saying that some sections of Erhai Lake are under renovation, so I found a customized free travel guide on Taobao. It is more professional and detailed. If you want to travel independently but are not good at finding your way and are worried about getting lost, you can search on Taobao. The store name is [Light Butler]
Dali Ancient Town
I came here originally to find a courtyard to stay in.
Because I have already had the experience of running an inn in Lijiang,
Therefore, there must be a comparison between the ancient towns of Lijiang and Dali.
My initial impression of Dali Ancient Town was not very good. Few houses were made of wood, and the shops lacked the characteristics of Lijiang Ancient Town.
But over time
Gradually began to appreciate the simplicity of the Bai people
Just like the white building structures used in every household
Pure and clean
After getting off at Renmin Road Station, I walked into the Honglongjing Gate and wondered if I had come to the wrong place.
The deserted Dali Ancient Town, is this a fake Dali?
There's really no one.
On Renmin Road, all the shops were still closed, but the moon could still be vaguely seen hanging over Cangshan Mountain.
There are also some very artistic and colorful shops on the street.
It is better to visit Dali Ancient Town at night, as it has a better atmosphere. It is still too quiet in the morning. Many shops are not open yet, and there is nothing to visit. So I just wandered away~
Valentine's Day Holidays 2017
This time I chose to stay in Dali Ancient Town to spend a long vacation.
Accommodation: I carefully selected a very unique inn, which was quite good in all aspects. Being able to sleep warmly in February is very important for a northerner. The food there was delicious. I could set an alarm to get up and eat the rice noodles in the morning.
Walking: Dali Ancient Town is larger than Lijiang, and the streets are very long. You will have different experiences walking along each street. Because it is the off-season, there are not many people on the street, and it is very leisurely. It is worth mentioning that the cinema in the ancient town has been arranged as a museum, and many old posters and old objects are exhibited. This is a beautiful encounter.
Buy: I prefer traditional crafts, so I bought a lot of hand-embroidered pieces of cloth this time. On a small street, I also came across a hand-made shoe workshop and bought two pairs of embroidered shoes of the right size. This was the biggest gain of this trip.
Food: The restaurants and street vendors in the ancient city have their own characteristics. We ate local snacks according to our prior preparations, and tried hot pot and spicy hot pot... Rushan was our favorite. We were the first wave of customers of the eldest sister that day. We hid in the small room where the eldest sister made Rushan and tasted the Rushan she fried for us. It was more fragrant than the roasted ones.
On Valentine's Day, I took the prepared postcards to the post office early to get them stamped with the day's scenery date stamp. The stamp pattern was the same as the stamp pattern on the postcard, and with the special date, it was perfect!!!
Dali is really beautiful. The layout of the ancient city is better than that of Lijiang Ancient City. It is more regular. The prices of shops are not particularly expensive, and tourists are coming in an endless stream. Warm reminder: Dali Ancient City does not have an ancient city maintenance fee. There are many tourists. When we arrived at Dali Ancient City at around 9:00 am on New Year's Eve, it was already crowded. The shops have also started business and it is very lively. But it is really difficult to find a place to take pictures. In addition, there are two ways to get from Dali Station to the ancient city. The first one is the express bus (Dali Station-Three Pagodas Special Line) with a fare of 3 yuan. The second one is: after leaving the station, there is a Dali Tourism Distribution Center next to the exit. There are tourist buses that go directly to Dali Ancient City. The fare is 5 yuan. On the bus, the staff will give you detailed introductions on how to travel to each scenic spot and travel precautions, which is very comprehensive.
I stayed in Dali Ancient Town for just two or three days and had a great impression. Prices are not expensive. We stayed at Yunshang Four Seasons for only 200+ per night, and rented a double bicycle with a canopy for 40 yuan per day! This Selem is a halal restaurant recommended by locals. The taste is a bit strong for Cantonese people. After eating a few mouthfuls of noodles, it was so salty. I thought I would drink some soup to slow down the taste, but the soup was even saltier... But Yunnan rice noodles are really delicious! Any restaurant you find there is super delicious!
TIPS: The main streets are Fuxing Street, Yangren Street, Renmin Road and Honglongjing; staying there from afternoon to night is the best option; people are handing out fried dough twists for tasting all along the ancient city; the sun in Dali is not too hot, but the ultraviolet rays are still very strong.
Recommended play time: half day (afternoon + evening)
Recommendation index: 4 stars
The style of Dali Ancient Town seems to be different from the ancient towns I have visited before, although it is also formal and unified. It feels brighter here, and the streets seem to be wider. This seems to inadvertently give the sun a chance to run wild.
The signposts in the ancient city are very responsible, although I didn’t really look at them during those days as I was just wandering around.
I feel that traveling this way will be more pleasant and comfortable.
You can ride an electric bike in the ancient city.
But this road is so steep that I felt my hands were about to be shaken off when driving.
The temperature in Dali does not drop sharply at night like in Lijiang. Although it is a little colder than during the day, the temperature difference between day and night is not that big.
The bustling pedestrian street in Dali Ancient Town is just a straight one, and it looks like an ordinary small town during the day.
Dogs in Dali are all so leisurely, listening to the wonderful music in the bars at night. The wifi symbol on the head is destined to be a dog followed by someone~
I didn't come across this Da Bing restaurant in Lijiang, but I found it in Dali. The seats inside were full and there was a line of people waiting to go in outside.
Mottled city walls, time that has stopped.
I have always loved ancient city attractions. Although life is always about daily necessities, I think life in ancient cities is a little different.
Kaidi has been to both Dali and Lijiang. He feels that the ancient town of Dali is rather rough, like a rough man? ? The ancient town of Lijiang is exquisite and graceful, while the ancient city of Dali has a very solemn and large gate. However, the small disadvantage is that the shops in the city are quite overlapping and lack characteristics.
There is not much to write about in detail about the ancient town, because it is all the same, with the same traditional costumes, crowds, bars and dogs ~ but when you are there, you feel that it has a lot of different flavors.
If you like the hustle and bustle, then you must come in the evening. The shops are bustling with tourists, and it is easy to enjoy the delicious food, such as the sour and spicy rice noodles, the browned milk fans, the fragrant flower cakes all over the street, and the rose crisps pounded by two handsome guys with their buttocks twisted. Although it is a bit spicy, it is full of spring.
At first glance, the whole capital seems to be well preserved. After the construction of later generations, the ancient flavor is no longer strong. The crowds of tourists and the flashing neon lights at night make the ancient and modern elements intertwine with each other, and some international elements are mixed in. The overall feeling is hard to describe. I can only sigh that if you want to go to some places, you should go early. However, without prosperity, will the ancient city wither? Without the development of tourism, how many ancient buildings will be overturned under the tracks of excavators?
Enter from Wuhua Tower. The pedestrian street is very lively, with shops lining the streets and water flowing under your feet. The Bai people thrive here, and tourists find themselves here, each taking what they need, which is very similar to other ancient towns.
Practical Tips
Cost: There is no ticket for Dali Ancient Town, it is completely free
Time: You can enter and exit 24 hours a day, but I personally think the best time is dusk.
Eat: Ersi, Rushan, Flower Cake, Mushroom Hotpot outside the Ancient City
Accommodation: It is recommended to stay in an inn outside the Dali Ancient Town, because parking is not allowed inside the ancient town. If it is more open during the peak season, the price here is moderate. I have also stayed in an inn inside the ancient town, the conditions are slightly worse, and the parking fee is expensive.
About buying: What other ancient cities have, we can also find here. Souvenirs are ok, but if you want to buy silver jewelry, you need to be calm. At least you haven't seen what works the craftsmen hammering on the street have made. As for whether the silver jewelry comes from local or somewhere else, you can't tell.
In addition, the flower cakes can be shipped nationwide and are available for tasting. There is also traditional brown sugar, which is really good.
Flower cakes are indispensable in Dali Ancient City. Many streets and alleys in the ancient city are under renovation during the New Year, but this does not affect the shops making flower cakes, which spread the fragrance to every corner of the ancient city. The raw materials for making flower cakes are placed in front of the shops, with traditional fillings and new styles such as matcha.
Under the night sky, the ancient city of Dali, which is crowded with tourists, has gradually lost the political majesty of the ancient Nanzhao Kingdom and is more like a unified ancient town with bars, barbecues, and postcards. Instead, the small alleys in the corners, the flowers and plants under the eaves, and the few early cherry blossoms that fall in a mess in the breeze represent the "greatest reason".
The entrance to Dali Ancient Town is right next to it, with some eye-catching big words on it.
Next to it were some small vendors selling some odd and corner items that I didn't need at all. There were also vendors selling hats and sunglasses, the designs were not very good. They were dark-skinned, wearing dark-colored clothes of military green or dark gray that looked a little old, and their Mandarin was not so standard, but we could communicate.
Looking inside through the large plaque that read "Dali Ancient Town" at the entrance, I saw a one-way street with shops lined up on both sides, and many bright red signs saying rental business.
I was wondering... Is this really the ancient city of Dali? I think it's definitely not.
The ancient city might be inside… I continued to walk inside, looking for some interesting little scenery, but I saw a few uncles digging up the 20-centimeter-thick stone slabs on the ground and repairing the water pavilion under the stone slabs. There was dust all around… I saw the silver shop full of silverware, and just when I wanted to pick up the SLR to take pictures, the shopping guide ran out and said, "Sorry, you can't take pictures." I saw the business halls of China Mobile, China Unicom, Huawei, etc. I saw the bright and eye-catching glazed tiles and heard high-decibel music from a distance, but I still walked in to see it because I didn't know where to go. There were aunties dancing square dances inside, and next to them was a vendor selling rental electric vehicles. I still walked in, thinking that the ancient city should be inside…
Until I reached the end of the road, I looked up and saw Cangshan Mountain. A strange aunt next to me came up to me and recommended a group tour of Cangshan Cableway around Erhai Lake. When she talked about Cangshan Mountain, she pointed to the mountain in front of me. I was very confused, but I subconsciously had the answer, "Auntie, is this the ancient city of Dali?"
Auntie smiled and said, "Of course this is the ancient city of Dali."
I wandered aimlessly, walking in every alley, and accidentally came to a row of flowers for sale. At first I didn't pay attention, thinking it was still a vegetable market. He excitedly pulled me forward, and I realized that the place in front of me was full of flowers...
I like the flowers in Dali Ancient Town. Three bunches for 10 yuan, tied in bundles, not at all pretentious, and in the most original appearance. Unlike most flower vendors who have to carefully insert, cut, and even exquisitely package the flowers, they use grass rings to tie the flowers, and the display flowers are also in woven bamboo baskets, which have become dark in color after being used for a long time. Most of the flower sellers are grandmothers, who are also very simple, with their apple cheeks squeezed and their smiles kind and amiable. Buying flowers feels like going to the vegetable market, and you don't have to worry about money. This is a luxury for us who grew up in an area where flowers are hard to find.
Walking along the wall of the ancient city, the surrounding buildings are all old houses with Chinese characteristics. Although there are similar houses in Guangzhou, there are really not many of them. Unlike here, the entire ancient city is full of such buildings, giving people a very old feeling.
You can visit the scenic spots at will, but you must not miss the food. You must try the roasted milk fan and bait cake in Dali.
Rushan - It is best to bake it fresh. Rushan itself has a strong milky aroma, and with the special rose sauce, the taste will linger in your mouth for a long time.
I think the ancient city is more lazy during the day. Maybe everyone is enjoying the leisure of slowing down life.
The shops that impressed me the most in this place are silver jewelry shops, flower cake shops, music bars, and various handicraft shops, but there are few shops selling daily necessities. The tour guide of the Airport Express said that this is because Dali is divided into a living area and an ancient city area. Generally, the office buildings and homes of residents are in the living area, while most of the people in the ancient city area are tourists, so there are very few daily necessities shops in the ancient city area.
The paradise in my heart. With Cangshan Mountain on the left and Erhai Lake on the right, coming here is as beautiful as a dream coming true. From Caicun to the ancient city, you need transportation, and there are tuk-tuks, bicycles, and electric cars to choose from. This is the bad thing about Dali. There are traffic chaos everywhere, and the charging standards are all "negotiated". If you don't cut it well, you will be slaughtered. There is no way, who made Dali follow the footsteps of Lijiang, and more and more people come here for its reputation. It is said that on the third day of the Chinese New Year, 100,000 troops crowded in Dali. Because many tourists did not book accommodation in advance, a sofa in Dali's inn was fried to 300 yuan/night. I just want to say that these tourists are really big-hearted, and it is even more difficult to imagine how crowded Lijiang will be during the Chinese New Year. Fortunately, we didn't drive, but took a tuk-tuk to the ancient city. It was very happy to walk around in the crowded ancient city. There are many specialty shops and bars on Renmin Road and Foreigner Street. We had an authentic Bai family dinner in the ancient city. Gege's father picked out dishes that he had never tried before. As for the taste, we can only say that the local climate and soil nurture the local people. As a guest from the Central Plains, we just need to taste it. I promised Gege to choose a toy for her as a souvenir, but after walking around for a long time, I found that there was no business for children in such a big ancient city. The most popular ones were various ethnic costumes and dazzling jewelry. There were many specialty shops that attracted people to stop and look up at night. The sky of Dali was really star-studded.
In Dali at night, there are more people and the night view is still very beautiful.
However, there are only one or two bustling streets. Apart from those, dim street lights and deserted streets are what locals see Dali at night.
The whole Dali feels the same as when I came here a few years ago. There is not much change. If there is any, it is that the online celebrity marketing thinking of merchants and inns has become stronger. But in general, when you come to Dali, the accommodation you experience is not much good or bad, but the style and pace are similar.
The ancient city is one of the most famous attractions in Dali.
Living here, you can go to Cangshan Mountain, Erhai Lake, Chongsheng Temple, etc. It is very convenient.
There is no shortage of delicious food here, such as Fuxing Courtyard, I'm Waiting for You in Dali, and so on.
While playing here, there is a mature commercial circle, as well as the Foreigner Street, Dali Museum, etc. The unique clear sky makes taking photos beautiful no matter how you take them.
Compared with Lijiang Ancient Town, I prefer the ancient charm of Dali Ancient Town. Although both of them are commercialized to a certain extent, walking on the streets of Dali Ancient Town will make people feel like they are in an ancient town.
Walking in the ancient city, although it is in the off-season, the streets are still bustling, but compared to the crowds, I am already satisfied. There are many types of shops in the ancient city, selling both traditional snacks and modern Western fast food, with a strong sense of fusion of Chinese and Western.
There are four major city gates in Dali Ancient City. We strolled to three of them, namely the West Gate (Cangshan Gate), the North Gate (Three Pagodas Gate), and the South Gate. Only the North Gate can go up to the tower to view the scenery of the entire ancient city. Traditional buildings are everywhere. After being accustomed to the high-rise buildings in Guangzhou, this ancient city is indeed unique.
While visiting the ancient city, it started to drizzle. The ancient city wet by the rain had a unique flavor. The air was very moist, with an indescribable fragrance. There were many pedestrians on the road, passing by each other, with different walks.
We ate and walked around. Although it was raining, our enthusiasm was undiminished. After walking around the ancient city, we found a bar to rest. So, we drank some wine, watched the rain, listened to the songs, and emptied our minds. The singer's voice was particularly comfortable, like a melodious flute in the rain, catching the ears and touching the heart. He sat there quietly, holding a guitar, singing lazy love songs. I don't know what he was thinking about, maybe his hometown, maybe life, maybe his lover, but all I can think of is the distance.
There are not many people in the ancient city at night. The wet bluestone road reflects mottled light and shadow. Occasionally, pedestrians pass by, crushing the light and shadow and disappearing into the hustle and bustle. The evening breeze is a bit cool but very comfortable. There are many old people selling flowers at the city gate.
Em...there's really nothing to see, it's just an ordinary ancient city or town, just eat and drink.
The food at Duan Gongzi Tianlongbabu restaurant is pretty good, the food is good, and the waiters are very cute.
Some streets are under repair, and they are the main places. There are still many people in the ancient city.
I mainly walked around Renmin Road and Yangren Street. I passed by many pubs, but I didn't seem to be interested in going in for a drink.
The ancient city of Dali is quite different from Lijiang. After all, it is the "imperial city" of Dali Kingdom. It has wide roads, flat land, and a sense of being connected in all directions. It is not as winding as Lijiang, where you can easily get lost. Looking around the ancient city buildings, the houses are low in a row, not so close to each other, and there are not so many commercial shops. The mottled walls, broken bricks and tiles, and the old age are the impression of the ancient city. It is not so exquisite that it has a simple flavor.
There are four gates in Dali Ancient City. The East Gate faces Erhai Lake, the West Gate faces Cangshan Mountain, and the South Gate is the first of the four gates. The word "Dali" on the gate was written by Guo Moruo. As for the North Gate, the Three Pagodas of Chongsheng Temple are not far away.
Although it was raining, there were still many people in Dali Ancient City. It was pleasant to walk leisurely through the small streets and alleys of the ancient city, enjoy the scenery of the ancient city, and savor the leisurely and slow-paced life of the ancient city. The blooming flowers were hung with raindrops, which made them more beautiful than before. Various umbrellas were floating in the streets. Walking in the rainy Dali Ancient City, in the drizzle, there was a hint of sadness in the romance. The ancient city in the drizzle was indeed a special artistic conception.
The ancient city under the night sky is a mixture of light and shadow, colorful, and the towers with flying eaves and pointed corners appear even more beautiful than during the day.
When we first arrived at the ancient city of Dali, my mother was a little disappointed. It didn’t seem as grand and magnificent as it was on TV. Roads were being built and new houses were being constructed everywhere.
Fried milk slices, one of the 18 wonders of Yunnan, used to be 2 yuan a piece but now they are 5 yuan a piece everywhere.
It is recommended that you go to the vegetable market near the ancient city to buy it and cook it back home for better taste.
Yunnan's tie-dyeing technology is getting better and better. The prices vary depending on the technique and size. Ladies can take their time to choose, as there are so many patterns.
Fuxing Road is full of shops and noisy, just like most ancient towns in China. When we arrived at Wuhua Tower, we saw a stone bridge and flowing water on the left, which was a nice view, so we turned left. This is the Honglongjing Street District. There are white stones and shallow streams all the way, winding and twisting; there are green trees above and bluestone roads below. When we arrived at the intersection of Boai Road, we turned left again. Boai Road is very quiet and has no special features. Restaurants and shops are lined up in loneliness. If you walk into an alley on the side of the road, you will find five or six inns hidden in the winding alley. Including the ones on the street, there are more than a hundred inns in the entire Dali Ancient City.
Outside the South Gate of Dali Ancient Town, there are many stalls selling things, and the things are very cheap~
The ancient city of Dali was once the capital of the Nanzhao Kingdom and the Dali Kingdom. Today, the main streets are all filled with shops and restaurants. It doesn't have the temperament of a capital city at all. Frankly speaking, I don't like it very much. However, the only Bai Catholic Church in the world is very beautiful.
Many photos have been lost. The most beautiful part of Dali Ancient Town is its streets. The stone pavement has long been smoothed out, and it is natural and pure. The shops and decorations next to it retain most of the Chinese characteristics, and some newly opened shops are also basically based on the new Chinese style. There are some indigenous people in the area, but after all, the commercial development is relatively mature. At night, apart from tourists and merchants, it is rare to see local people who live ordinary lives.
Wandering around the ancient city without any purpose or map, just going wherever you want.
There were many Jinhua in Dali who asked me if I wanted to braid my hair. A braid cost 5 or 10 yuan. I braided a braid for 10 yuan. Jinhua thought I was too small a customer and kept urging me to become a big customer. For example, I could braid several more braids on the side and spend another 30 yuan to make it look better. But I couldn't bear to spend money, so I refused to take off this small dirty braid even when I washed my hair. I wore it all the way to Lijiang.
The fruit sold at an old golden flower shop is said to be a small fruit grown on a cactus. It tastes average and not very sweet. I have never eaten it before, so I tried it. The snake skin fruit is so sour that I asked the boss to give me one. The perfumed pineapple is really delicious and sweet. I ate a small box in one go.
I always have an indescribable feeling of intimacy with the dogs in the ancient city. It seems that I like every one of them, hahahaha.
I love tofu, so I have to stop and eat it when I see it. But I am not used to the tofu with coating, which is a bit smelly.
Flower cakes cost 1 yuan each, and I ate 1. Flower cakes cost 10 yuan each, and I ate 3.
The houses in Dali Ancient Town are very distinctive. These houses are built with soft stones. The first floor is high and the second floor is low. It is said that the first floor is where people live and the second floor is where gods live.
The roller-dyed cloth is actually quite nice-looking. I really want to buy a piece to take home, but after studying it for a long time, I still can’t think of what I can do with it, so I’ll just appreciate it.
Dali Ancient City is very quiet, full of life, majestic, and convenient for traffic. There are tourists and local residents, their own houses, and inns and small shops.
The history of Dali Ancient City can be traced back to the Tianbao period of the Tang Dynasty, when the Nanzhao King Geluofeng built Yangzhumie City as his new capital. During the 500-year history of the Tang and Song dynasties, Dali Ancient City was the political, economic and cultural center of Yunnan. It carries the historical culture, religious culture and ethnic culture of Dali. It is the core area of Dali tourism and a must-see for tourists to Dali.
The most beautiful thing about Dali Ancient City is probably the night view. When I first arrived at the ancient city, the lights were already on. There weren't many people inside. One reason was that it was the off-season, and the other was that Dali was managing the environment, so many people skipped the Dali itinerary, which allowed us to leisurely visit the ancient city. Walking in the ancient city, you either go uphill or downhill. You have to walk slowly, look slowly, and eat slowly when visiting the ancient city. Before you know it, you will feel full. What you can't miss is rice noodles. Both rice noodles and rice vermicelli are made from rice, but the process is different and they are made into different things. The taste varies from person to person. Rice vermicelli is also a must-eat in Yunnan. There are many flavors and many ingredients. The taste is very heavy and the soup is thick. There are many taverns in Dali, where you can tell your own stories and listen to other people's stories.
The ancient city is a must-visit in Dali. It may not be the most beautiful ancient city, but it is definitely the most popular one. Whether it is the Cangshan Mountain standing quietly beside or the rippling Erhai Lake, or the Bai-style buildings, the artistic foreigner street, the delicious food street or the leisurely and leisurely life in the ancient city, they are all enough to keep you moving.
Although it is the National Day, there are not as many tourists in Dali Ancient Town during the day as at night. Maybe many of them went to play around Dali. The reason why we didn't go to the surrounding areas during the day was that we couldn't buy tickets for the right time and were afraid of playing too hastily, so we could only stay in the ancient town. The snacks in Dali Ancient Town are very unique, including baba, carved plums, milk fans, bait blocks, rice noodles, bean powder, flower cakes, papaya water, rice cold shrimp, etc., mainly concentrated in Fuxing Road and Renmin Road. For the first meal in the ancient city, we chose to look back to the cold chicken rice noodles and chicken wings wrapped in rice. There are also many kinds of fruits in Dali Ancient Town, including dragon fruit, sugar apple, figs, mango, pomegranate, etc. The most special one is the small pineapple imported from Thailand, which is only the size of an apple, but it is sweeter. The first time I saw the real thing, I saw it in other people's travel notes. Dali Ancient Town, for foodies, the happiest thing is that fruits can make you eat very happily, because some fruits are more affordable.
There are too few public transportations from Dali Ancient Town to the surrounding areas. For example, there is no public transportation from the ancient town to Xizhou. I originally planned to take a tourist through bus, but the route between the ancient town and Xizhou was suspended during the National Day holiday (according to the ticket seller, there were not enough buses).
There are dogs everywhere in the ancient city. But maybe they have seen more people than I have seen dogs. So, the dogs in the ancient city are super cool. They don't pay attention to people. Dali's ancient city is relatively quiet. The prices are not expensive, but you must bargain. The safest way is to bargain in half. There are many snacks. But there is a snack city that I don't recommend. The prices are quite high. It is next to McDonald's in the ancient city. If you don't braid your hair, it's like you haven't come to Dali (10 yuan for 6 strands is very cheap). Dali Ancient City is not big. I didn't go to places with few people. I avoided other places.
We took the bus to the entrance of Dali Ancient City, and then my suitcase began a long and torturous journey. The roads in the ancient city are paved with stone slabs, which are really good-looking but not practical. To put it nicely, they are well-arranged, but to put it bluntly, they are full of potholes. My arms are almost broken after walking all the way. Fortunately, the dazzling array of shops along the way distracted our attention. There are many exquisitely decorated small shops in the ancient city, selling all kinds of accessories, specialties, food, and clothes, which is really a pleasure for us. And we met a lot of dogs, changing various sleeping positions, so leisurely. The next day, after washing up and going out, I found that many shops were not open yet. It is indeed a city with a slow pace of life. Everyone is lazy and casual. They will not open the door too early to do business. Unlike Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, they go out early and come back late. Maybe this is life. Some people choose to stay in a city like Dali, maybe they just fall in love with this lifestyle.
The bluestone roads, cobblestones, antique buildings on both sides, some of which are covered with moss, and the doors and windows are carved with exquisite patterns, making Dali City look simple and unique. There are also small stalls on both sides of the street selling some artistic handicrafts. More shops are shrouded in a strong commercial atmosphere, with all kinds of ethnic handicrafts and tourist souvenirs, people coming in and out, a prosperous scene.
Dim lights, long folk songs, I can't help but stop when I hear beautiful songs~
Dali Ancient City is located at the foot of the beautiful Cangshan Mountain. It was the capital of the ancient Nanzhao Kingdom and Dali Kingdom. It is a good place to live. Locals work from sunrise to sunset and grow flowers and plants and bask in the sun in their spare time. In addition, the sunny weather and suitable temperature attract countless tourists.
Many people like Dali at night, but I prefer the freshness of the ancient city during the day.
Only at this time can you avoid the hustle and bustle of the crowds and appreciate the remaining charm of these ancient Bai buildings.
The ancient city of Dali is divided into four gates: East (Erhai Gate), West (Cangshan Gate), South (Dali Gate), and North. The interior is very square. As long as you walk in the order of the gates, you can find where you want to go.
When night falls, the ancient city of Dali seems to have just woken up from a dream. The moving melodies and bustling crowds on the streets become unique under the light.
I personally like visiting Dali very much. Every shop has its own characteristics. I especially like the Bai embroidery pieces, which are rich in colors and exquisite in workmanship.
My first impression of the ancient city was that it was a bit messy. There were fewer people in the city than I expected. It didn't seem to be packed like it was during the National Day holiday. This might be the reason why I arrived a day earlier.
As there were not many guides, I just walked around randomly. Dali Ancient City is divided into four main gates and two side gates. I walked around randomly and went into any interesting attractions I saw. Although it is the largest ancient city in existence, due to the premature commercial development, it gave me the intuitive feeling that it is too commercialized. My ideals and dreams are still so tacky here. I didn't think too much about strolling around carefully. I just stopped there to pass by because I knew I would be disappointed.
I was walking around and before I knew it, it was already past 8 o'clock. The ancient city of Dali became completely lively. The streets were crowded with people. Renmin Road and Yangren Street were very lively. Looking at the prosperous and lively commercial street, I didn't feel like I liked it at all. The bars on the street were all soliciting business. I shuttled through them, occasionally stopping at the door to listen. There were girls sitting alone in the bar, but I never dared to go in alone. Besides, I came here to immerse myself better. I really don't like such a lively scene. I can also feel that life here is actually no different from Beijing and Shanghai. I just changed a place to indulge myself, nothing else.
We walked straight along Renmin Road. We didn't deliberately go to any shops in the ancient city to check in, so we just let our eyes stop wherever they attracted us. There seemed to be more people in the city than when we came in the afternoon. The closer we walked to the central street, the denser the crowds became. Only then did we slowly feel the liveliness of a "scenic spot". In fact, during the few days in the ancient city, whether it was sunny or rainy, wherever we looked, in addition to the dazzling array of shops and the bustling crowds, what attracted me the most from beginning to end was the dark blue mountains in the distance with smoke and clouds.
Although most ancient cities with flowing water are the same, we were not disappointed when we first saw the ancient city of Dali. The ancient city has two faces during the day and at night. One is peaceful and quiet and not quite real, while the other is a bit charming and a bit sentimental. The hawking in front of the food store, the live singing in the bar, the overly familiar drums, and the sometimes rumbling and sometimes sparse human voices...are all real sounds of the ancient city.
The ancient city of Dali is bordered by Erhai Lake in the east and Cangshan Mountain in the west, forming a city pattern of water surrounding Cangshan Mountain and Cangshan Mountain embracing the ancient city. It has a construction history of 1,200 years. The existing ancient city of Dali was restored on the basis of Yangzhumie City in the early Ming Dynasty. The city is square in shape, with four gates, towers built on top, and the outer layer of the city wall is made of bricks; there are five streets running from south to north in the city, and eight streets and alleys running from west to east. The entire ancient city is laid out like a chessboard.
Free admission, open all day
Tourist attractions: South City Gate - Fuxing Road - Presidential Military Commander's Mansion - Honglongjing - Wuhua Building - Renmin Road - Foreigner Street - Yu'er Road - Cangshan Gate, etc.
The ancient city of Dali is crowded with people at night, and it is occupied by more young people. The ancient city of Dali is crowded with people at night, and it is occupied by more young people. This is a scene rarely seen during the trip. The ancient city is full of vitality because of the increase in young people. This is a scene rarely seen during the trip. Maybe because I was in a hurry, I didn't have enough time to explore the place. It felt like a place with a strong commercial atmosphere, full of various shops. There was nothing special or that could reflect the local culture. I hope I can go there again next time and take a good look around.
Located at the foot of the scenic Cangshan Mountain, Dali Ancient City was the capital of the ancient Nanzhao Kingdom and Dali Kingdom. The streets in the city are arranged in a typical chessboard pattern and it is the core tourist area of Dali.
The South Gate of Dali Ancient Town is the most conspicuous landmark building in the ancient town, and it is also a place where many tourists must check in and take photos.
Wuhua Tower was the "No. 1 Tower in the World" of ancient Nanzhao. It is also the most conspicuous landmark building in the middle section of Dali Ancient City and should not be missed.
The same old town, a bigger version of Lijiang Old Town, but it feels much more grand than Lijiang Old Town, and not as rip-off. Not as shady as Lijiang. It's large and lively, you can live here, and it's suitable for eating and staying.
Compared with Lijiang and Dukezong Ancient Town, Dali has a very lively atmosphere. Cangshan snow, Erhai Lake moon, here you can find the mountains and seas you want to go to, as well as the cozy rooftops and delicious food.
Compared with the Dali Ancient City five years ago, the commercialization here is obviously higher. The smoky barbecue on the street, the deafening bars, and the colorful Yiwu tourist commodities seem to make this place gradually "Lijiang". However, as long as you are willing to find a sparsely populated path at the right time, you can still feel the soothing atmosphere of human life and the simple beauty left by the ancient city. I recommend the vegetable market at the north gate of the ancient city. You must get up early so as not to miss the first flower fragrance in the morning!

In 937 AD, Duan Siping established the Dali Kingdom. In the 15th year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty (1382), the Ming Dynasty captured Dali and built the Dali Ancient City. The word "Dali" on the ancient city is engraved with Guo Moruo's handwriting.
The ancient city of Dali, also known as Yucheng, is located at the foot of the beautiful Cangshan Mountain, 13 kilometers away from Xiaguan, Dali City. Dali Ancient City was built in the 15th year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty (1382) and is one of the first batch of historical and cultural cities in China. Dali Ancient City faces Erhai Lake in the east and Cangshan Mountain in the west. The city tower is majestic and the scenery is beautiful. Dali City is magnificent, with a square area of 12 miles. The original city wall was 7.5 meters high and 6 meters thick. There were originally four city gates in the east, west, south and north, with towers on them. If Xiaguan, the capital of the autonomous prefecture, gives people the impression of prosperity and noise, then Dali Ancient City is simple and quiet.
We entered the ancient city from the south gate, but we didn't find any traces of the ancient city. There were shops everywhere, and the goods sold were very similar. The commercial atmosphere was too strong, which was not the ancient city I wanted to see. Some residential buildings were quite distinctive.
There is a main street running through the north and south of Dali City, with shops selling marble products, tie-dye, straw weaving and other specialty products, as well as Bai ethnic minority restaurants. Clear streams flow through the city, and quaint and elegant Bai ethnic minority traditional houses can be seen everywhere. No matter rich or poor, the residents here have the habit of growing flowers and grass in their courtyards. There is a saying in Dali Ancient City that "every house has running water and every household has flowers".
The South Gate of Dali Ancient City is called Shuanghe Tower or Cheng'en Tower. The South Gate is the first of the four gates of the ancient city. It was built in the 15th year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty (1382). It is the oldest and most majestic building in the ancient city and the symbol and landmark of Dali Ancient City. The four sides of the ancient city wall are about 1,500 meters long, 6 meters high and 12 meters thick.
The word "Dali" on the city gate was written by Guo Moruo when he visited Dali in 1961. "Dali" is the name of the country, which means "governing Dali will make the country prosperous and revitalize the nation."
The first time I came to Dali was when I was a student. Compared with the bustling Lijiang Ancient Town, Dali Ancient Town is like a clear stream, with wide stone streets, lazy afternoons, and a slow-paced lifestyle... I have always maintained that longing for Dali.
After seven or eight years, I came back and it seemed a little unfamiliar. Restaurants and shops were crowded, cars and scooters filled the streets, and markets and art spaces were full of them. Maybe it was because of the holidays, the ancient city was crowded with people, especially after nightfall, the noise and brightly lit shop signs made people feel a little bit discouraged.
The ancient city of Dali eventually conformed to the trend of commercialization. Life in the ancient city is no different from that in the city. There are long queues at the milk tea bars, and small shops are doing a booming business. Merchants make money here, and tourists have fun here. The leisurely, lazy, happy and priceless times of the past are gradually becoming less and less.
It’s not that commercialization is bad. After all, we are just short-term passers-by, not the long-term owners of Dali. For the locals, the improved living standards and accelerated economic development are indeed beneficial. The collision of new and old cultures may produce new sparks. But for passers-by, we may need more time to adapt.
If you are longing for the carefree and slow life in Dali and yearn for this utopia, it is recommended that you avoid holidays and come during the off-season. Take a walk along the Erhai Lake, walk through the mottled years of the ancient city, and look at the deep starry sky of Dali, so that your trip will be worthwhile.
It is a place you must visit when you come to Dali. It is the most majestic ancient city in Yunnan. There is Erhai Lake in the east and Cangshan Mountain in the west. The ancient city of Dali Kingdom disappeared in the war. The current Dali Ancient City was built during the Hongwu period of the Ming Dynasty and still retains a certain historical heritage. But now it has been built into a commercial district. The shops are changing like water, and they are basically for tourists to consume. The food is generally average. It is suitable for strolling on the street, spending an afternoon in a coffee shop or a bar, squatting in Wuhua Building until the lights come on, or renting a bicycle and riding on Huanhai West Road

Dali Ancient City is also known as Yeyu City and Purple City. Its history can be traced back to the Tianbao period of the Tang Dynasty, when the Nanzhao King Geluofeng built Yangzhumie City as its new capital. The ancient city was first built in the 15th year of the Hongwu period of the Ming Dynasty (1382), covering an area of 3 square kilometers. It is located under the Cangshan Mountain and on the shore of Erhai Lake. The city is 2,000 meters above sea level.
transportation:
1. Take bus No. 8 from Dali Railway Station. The last stop is near the 75th Army Hospital (North Gate). The fare is 3 yuan per person. It passes the East Gate and the journey takes 50-60 minutes.
2. Train Station - Dali Ancient Town special line, the journey takes about 35 minutes, the ticket price is 5 yuan, and it arrives at Nanmen Bus Station.
3. If you arrive in Dali by plane, you can first take the airport bus to Cangshan Hotel, then take bus No. 8 to the nearest "City Hospital" station.
Whether you take the special bus or bus No. 8 depends on where you are staying. The two buses stop at different locations in the ancient city, otherwise you will have to go a long way.

I wanted to find some peace and quiet, to visit some ancient sites, but the place was too commercialized, with too many people and cars, street vendors, bars, and horns. I fled! I fled! I fled!
Although Dali Ancient Town is already very commercialized and most of the things you buy are the same as those in ordinary tourist attractions, we were just wandering around aimlessly because there were not many people in the ancient town. Under the blue sky and white clouds, with the green trees and the melodious music floating from the shops, such time was so beautiful.
.
I especially recommend the street where Rushi Coffee is located. It is far away from the main road of the ancient city, has few people and is very quiet. I really like it.

This city, where you can go up the Cangshan Mountain and down the Erhai Lake, and where so many people never get tired of staying, still has mediocre people. Many beautiful fantasies may be created by outsiders.
Perhaps it was because I had this perception and overly high expectations from the beginning, that when I saw the ancient city crowded with tourists during the off-season, I immediately lost interest in the ancient city.
If you are a pure tourist, I actually think it is boring to play. If you have friends in Dali, it is simply a happy new world. I really like riding a small electric donkey in the warm Dali Ancient Town to bask in the sun and play with cats and dogs.
Dali Ancient City was built in the 15th year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty (1382) and is one of the first batch of historical and cultural cities in China. The streets in the ancient city are relatively wide, and motor vehicles can pass through. It is relatively safe for pedestrians to walk to the shops. When going to the opposite shop, pay attention to the passing vehicles.
When traveling to Dali, Dali Ancient Town is a must-visit place. Whether you live in Dali Ancient Town or pass by this place, Dali Ancient Town will leave an impression on you. What impressed me was that Dali Ancient Town was full of houses and inns, and the prices were very cheap. It is also very convenient to go to Erhai Lake here. There are tourist bus routes, you can also rent a car to ride around Erhai Lake, or you can sign up for a one-day tour to travel around Erhai Lake. The ancient city will be more lively at night and quieter during the day. There are also many popular small attractions in the ancient city that are worth visiting.
To the east is the green Cangshan Mountain, and to the west is the azure Erhai Lake. Dali is peacefully embraced by the Cangshan Mountain and the Erhai Lake.
The ancient city of Dali is majestic on the outside and beautiful on the inside. The city walls are thick, there are gate towers on each side of the city, and corner towers are built on the four corners. There are many alleys in the city, which are horizontal and vertical, and look simple and generous. The uniform Bai architecture, with green tiles and white walls, is particularly unique. The Cangshan Snow Spring flows through every household through the streets and alleys, and the clear water is still flowing, adding vitality to the whole street!
The ancient city of Dali was the capital of the Nanzhao Kingdom. Now it has been developed into a commercial area with a strong commercial nature. There are many small shops. The hotel I stayed in was very close to it, so I could spend two or three hours to visit it.

It has been the political, economic and cultural center of Yunnan for more than 500 years during the Tang and Song Dynasties. Many historical relics left over from that era are still shining today. As time goes by, the once modern and prosperous ancient city of Dali seems to have been reborn driven by the tourism industry. From south to north, a main street runs through the city, and deep streets and alleys crisscross from west to east. The city is full of tiled roofs and cobblestone walls, showing the simplicity, uniqueness and elegance of the ancient city. It is worthwhile to walk into Dali Ancient City and enjoy the slow life!
Dali Ancient Town has become a commercialized ancient town. The first thing we saw when we entered the ancient town was that we were forced to buy and sell by the old ladies on the roadside. When we were taking pictures near Honglongjing, an old lady wearing Bai ethnic costumes on the roadside tried to sell us the Buddhist beads that were said to have been blessed. After we declined, the old lady forced the Buddhist beads to hang on my husband's camera. We were refused to return the Buddhist beads. The old lady kept chasing us and saying something like "stay safe when you are away from home", and asked us to give her some money. We had no choice but to give her 10 yuan and leave. We heard the old lady behind us saying: It's so little, others give 200 yuan.
I really don't like this kind of experience and travel environment.
Although commercial streets are the same across the country, Dali Ancient Town still has a special atmosphere, probably because the shop owners are all people who have wandered here from other places to find their ideals. It is great to eat, drink and have fun in the ancient town.
The ancient city of Dali is located in the western part of Yunnan Province. It is also known as Yeyu City and Zicheng. When I was in primary school, I learned from Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils that there was a Prince Duan in Dali, but I didn’t know that there was such a person in history. I was very curious and wanted to see what Prince Duan’s mansion looked like. Walking in the ancient city surrounded by high walls, imagining myself as a character in a martial arts novel, and then tasting the food in the ancient city, it was really very satisfying.
Woohoo! Traveling in Dali is so comfortable. The various tourist facilities are actually very complete. The airport bus to Xizhou Ancient Town and the bus are very easy to use for tourists. The price is good and the scenery is beautiful. I happened to listen to a concert of the Longtouqin, a Bai ethnic minority instrument, and a drama troupe on the mountain. The experience was perfect.
The only thing you need to pay attention to is that if you take the bus and get off at a stop that is not a tourist attraction, you need to shout to the driver in advance (just check the order of the stops in advance and tell him/her if you find that you have reached the previous stop). Otherwise... it won’t stop... which is a bit cold...
(I'd like to quietly recommend this Airbnb host couple, they are super nice! The house is old but it's so beautiful and the Dalmatian at home is so cute qwq)
The scale of Dali Ancient Town is much larger than those ancient towns I have visited before. You can imagine the prosperity of this ancient national capital.
The word "Dali" is engraved in large gold-plated characters outside the north gate. This ancient capital city, where the most kings became monks in real history, has seen many dignitaries who have seen through the mundane world and walked out of here to find inner peace.
The ancient city of Dali is located in the western part of Yunnan Province. It is also known as Yeyu City and Purple City. The history of the ancient city can be traced back to the Tianbao period of the Tang Dynasty, when the Nanzhao King Geluofeng built Yangzhumie City as its new capital. The ancient city was built in the 15th year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty (1382) and covers an area of 3 square kilometers. During the 500-year history of the Tang and Song dynasties, the ancient city of Dali was the political, economic and cultural center of Yunnan. There are 14 key cultural relics protection units at or above the municipal level distributed in the ancient city, carrying the historical culture, religious culture and ethnic culture of Dali, and is the core area of Dali tourism.
As one of the famous ancient cities in China, Dali Ancient City is worth a visit. The buildings in Dali Ancient City are antique and distinctive, many of which are from the Ming and Qing Dynasties and the Republic of China. Therefore, there are many cultural relics and historical sites in the ancient city, and there are many small attractions. The commercial atmosphere in the ancient city is also quite strong, and some of them seem to be wholesaled from Yiwu. At night, Dali is bright and dazzling, which reminds me of ancient poems: The east wind blows thousands of flowers at night, and blows down the stars like rain. The BMW carved carriages are full of fragrance. The sound of the phoenix flute moves, the light of the jade pot turns, and the fish and dragons dance all night.
Dali Ancient Town is very commercialized and not as culturally rich as expected. Dali Ancient Town is the place where I took the least photos. However, Jizhao Temple on Cangshan Mountain and Lover's Cliff on the Erhai Lake loop line are both good. Shuanglang Ancient Town is also heavily commercialized. Yang Liping's Moon Palace on Yuji Island is not visible. The Sun Palace is open to the public, but the consumption level is very high. You have to go down to see the Lover's Cliff to feel the wind of Erhai Lake up close. I like to climb up and down. There are many people taking wedding photos there. Some classic scenery requires waiting in line. It's a pity that I didn't go to Zhoucheng and didn't experience tie-dyeing. The overall feeling is not as good as Lijiang.
I recommend this homestay. It's new here not long ago. The cool colors are so attractive. You can take a lot of photos inside. They also have a store that sells clothing, handicrafts and some Yunnan specialties. They are very beautiful. I like it very much. The store owner is very considerate and the transportation is very convenient.
Most people's knowledge of Dali probably comes from Jin Yong, "Five Golden Flowers", or "My Fair Princess". The three of us gathered and were ready to wander among the mountains and rivers of Dali and slowly experience the romance of Dali. In order not to get up early, we chose the 9:24 bullet train and arrived at noon. We could take the bus in front of Dali Station to go directly to Dali Ancient City.
The whole street is filled with bars and music bars singing folk songs.
I have always had a wish
Go to a bar like this and find a quiet corner
Listen to folk songs quietly all night
The opportunity is right in front of you
Unfortunately, there is not much time to stay
This is also the only regret of this trip to Yunnan.
There are many snacks in the ancient city, such as Yunnan's local roasted milk fan, fried ear cubes, etc. You can try them~
The night view of the ancient city is even more beautiful, with bright lights and singing all around.
I recommend two restaurants: the bar - Yao San San, and the railway bento - braised pork rice
Dali Ancient Town is a completely commercial residential area built later. I went there just to stay for one night, and then went to Erhai Lake for travel photography the next day. Erhai Lake is just a lake, which is packaged very well. In fact, it is too ordinary. I think if the lake in my hometown is packaged like this, it will also be popular.
At that time, the commercial atmosphere in Dali, whether it was the Dali Ancient Town or the Erhai Lake, was far less strong, and the homestays by the Erhai Lake were just starting up. When we visited Dali, we stayed in March Street near the north gate of Dali. It is said that March Street is where the Bai people in Dali hold their March market. We call it "xu" here. In March of every year, everyone would bring their things here to exchange, hence the name March Street.
