Mengyuan Wonderland

Mengyuan Wonderland was not originally in our plan, but it was really worth the trip.

The caves were quite impressive. We also did a jungle safari, which was even more interesting. We waded through rivers, ate wild grasses, and drank tree sap (you couldn't buy food or water during the safari, but some plants provided water and others could be eaten). It was a really fun 7-hour safari, with only a few rations to fill our stomachs.

Rock climbing was even more fun. It was my first time, so I challenged myself! I'm a bit timid, and it took us seven hours to climb a mountain. I never thought I'd have such stamina. Haha, I'll definitely bring my son to try it next time.

Mengyuan Wonderland is quite beautiful, especially perfect for a visit in autumn and winter. It's truly cozy during this season, and you'll often see many tourists visiting during the warmer months, making it a perfect place to relax and spend the winter. Summer isn't too hot, though, making it a perfect time for adventure. I think there are two truly worthwhile attractions in Mengyuan Wonderland: the Baojiao Niu Cave and the thousand-year-old King Tree at the end of the rainforest hike (which, by the way, is incredibly large; even our group of six couldn't wrap their arms around it). First, let's talk about the Baojiao Niu Cave. It's not that this cave holds a significant place among cave-related scenic spots; compared to the caves in Guilin and Guizhou, it's certainly not spectacular. However, it's quite unique in Xishuangbanna, which is primarily tropical rainforest. As far as I know, Mengyuan Wonderland is the only other place that combines tropical rainforest with caves.

What captivated me most was the story surrounding the Baojiao Niu Cave. It goes that long ago, the area surrounding Mengyuan was a kingdom of wild cattle. In this kingdom, a powerful bull reigned supreme, claiming thousands of females as mates. To monopolize the herd, the Bull King slaughtered all the other bulls in the herd. Whenever a cow gave birth to a male calf, the Bull King would trample or gore it to death. Later, a cow mated with this Bull King and became pregnant. She suspected the fetus was a male. Unable to bear the thought of the Bull King's cruelty, she took advantage of the herd's foraging for grazing in the mountains and retreated into the dense forest, where she hid alone to await the birth of her calf. Sure enough, a male bull was born, the Baojiao Niu, known as Huaihaoxiang in the Dai language. Later, the Baojiao Niu's mother told the grown-up that her father was the incredibly powerful and cruel Bull King of the kingdom. The Baojiao Niu was filled with both resentment and envy. Later, it hid in the mountains, honing its skills and sharpening its horns. It found an opportunity to return to the buffalo kingdom and defeat its father. After Huaihaoxiang (also known as the Baojiao Niu) killed the old bull king in a cave and replaced him, he became even more brutal than the old one. Not only did he kill males, he also showed no mercy to females. Many elderly and underage cows perished because they could not satisfy his will. This new bull king also frequently entered the village and killed people and livestock. Eventually, the villagers, unable to tolerate this, organized hunters from several nearby villages to hunt down the bull monster. They used various methods to kill it in a cave now known as the Baojiao Niu Cave. The cave still houses scenes of Huaihaoxiang and his father fighting.

The adventure activities were quite interesting, especially since the area is very ecologically preserved and not as commercialized as other scenic spots. Overall, it really showcased the inherent qualities of nature. Oh, and the rainforest food was delicious. We even camped there that night, and the air was truly beautiful. Perhaps we went at a good time, as there were lots of fireflies around the campsite. Overall, it's definitely worth a visit.

The staff is nice, but the scenery is not special and not fun

I've always been fascinated by the pristine wildness of the tropical rainforest, and I had this idea: a trip to Mengyuan, an encounter with the unknown. Upon entering the scenic area, I was struck by the towering trees. The so-called sea of forests is a vast ocean of green, touching, absorbing, enveloping, lingering, and fermenting. For a moment, my body felt like it didn't belong to me. Its origins were this nature, and it still belongs to it. I heard that this was where Zhuge Liang stationed his troops during the Three Kingdoms period. Seeing this beauty, I felt like a fairyland. It truly is the intersection of human and heaven, half fairyland, half mortal. Everything was perfectly arranged. The trip to Mengyuan Wonderland was worthwhile!

I've always been fascinated by pristine rainforests, dreaming of visiting one in my lifetime. I'd originally planned on a tropical destination, but this trip to Mengyuan was no less impressive. It perfectly matched my vision of a rainforest, truly worthy of being called the "Oscar of the Rainforest"! Besides being my first time there, I also had many surprises: experiencing Dai culture for the first time, exploring caves, and worshipping Buddha with devotion... Mengyuan Wonderland lives up to its name! It's a foodie's paradise. Bamboo rice, pineapple rice, hand-pulled chicken, special baba... Perhaps it's because the food is handmade, it's a world away from the fast food we eat in the city. To put it poetically, it exudes natural flavors, the finished dishes still retaining the freshness of green leaves, the heat of wood fire, the sweetness of mountain springs... Okay, that description is a bit poetic, hahahaha. In short, it's delicious! Excellent!

Mengyuan Wonderland is truly a truly surprising place. Initially, I was completely unaware of its existence. It was only when my uncle spoke of it in a conversation, full of praise, that my curiosity piqued. After extensive online research and in-depth research, I was captivated by this fairyland-like place. Upon my actual visit, I was even more astounded. Built by a monk from Laos, this pagoda holds a sacred status in the hearts of locals. Visitors often circumambulate it, burning incense and praying for blessings.

For example, on International Women's Day, Mengyuan Wonderland held a special thanksgiving event, where a senior Theravada Buddhist monk chanted sutras and prayed for visitors and their families. The monks conveyed the Buddhist ideal of kindness, creating a peaceful and beautiful atmosphere. During the annual Dai New Year, also known as the Water Splashing Festival (mid-April on the Gregorian calendar), monks will come to Mengyuan Wonderland to chant sutras and pray for good weather, happiness and well-being in the coming year. In addition, there is an incense altar in the scenic area. Residents who come to pray can burn incense and make wishes around the incense altar, praying for the safety of their families. What is even more surprising is that Mengyuan Wonderland also organizes many special activities, such as: welcoming holy water at Baojiao Niu Cave, bathing the Buddha to send good luck, a national water splashing carnival, eating a family reunion dinner with ethnic characteristics, releasing water lanterns, watching bonfire parties, barbecue camping... In short, there are all kinds of things, as long as you can't think of it, there is nothing Mengyuan Wonderland can't do.

"As vast as the sky, soaring through the wind, ascending to heaven." Perhaps it's because I've read too many xianxia novels that I've always yearned for these fairyland-like places. I recently stumbled upon Mengyuan in Xishuangbanna online. This place, praised by Zhuge Liang as a fairyland, piqued my interest. Part of the Xishuangbanna Tropical Rainforest National Park, Mengyuan boasts unique natural landscapes like rainforests and karst caves, rich ethnic culture including ethnic minority villages, and the vibrant "treasure caves" of Theravada Buddhism. It truly is a perfect blend of the best. Coincidentally, I was traveling with my mother, so we decided to visit this "fairyland" together.

Yunnan is often associated with the Water Splashing Festival, and I happened to catch the Water Splashing Festival in April while in Mengyuan Wonderland.

The Water Splashing Festival, which means New Year in the Dai calendar, is a traditional festival celebrated by the Dai people, where they celebrate the New Year with a unique water-splashing ritual, showering each other with blessings. From April 13th to 16th, we rose early to bathe and pay our respects to the Buddha before embarking on several days of celebrations. During this time, we splashed each other with pure water, praying to wash away the misfortunes of the past year and embark on a new year filled with good wishes. We exchanged blessings with the Dai girls, dressed in their finery, splashing each other with clear water droplets, smiling broadly even though we knew we would be doused in the water.

Mengyuan Wonderland is such a magical place. Its enthusiasm can melt the barriers between people and leave only the most beautiful memories in the heart.

"Mengyuan Wonderland"... When I first heard this name, I wondered what kind of place could be called a "fairyland".

Later, out of curiosity, I went to learn about this place. I learned that it was located in the only tropical rainforest at 21 degrees north latitude. Driven by this inner desire to verify it, I embarked on a journey to find this wonderland.

With the help of a map and asking for directions, I finally arrived here. Here, I experienced the unique charm of Dai culture, the magnificent beauty of a thousand-year-old rainforest, and the magnificent appearance of a constant-temperature cave. Only then did I truly realize that this place, far from the hustle and bustle, is truly a paradise on earth.

Tired of the densely packed tourists and cookie-cutter internet-famous stores in scenic spots, the ancient and quiet Chengzi Dai Village allowed me to experience the unique charm of Dai culture, witness the sacred knife sacrifice ceremony, and experience the grand festival carnival. The authentic Dai delicacies and the dining environment far away from the hustle and bustle, how can one not like it!

The magnificent waterfalls are refreshing, the ancient tea trees are awe-inspiring, and the Dai knife making, Dai brocade weaving, and the slow-wheel pottery making technique, which has been used for over 4,000 years, are eye-opening.

Mengyuan Wonderland is indeed a great place worth visiting. It retains a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere and authentic customs, like a paradise on earth.

I had heard that the jungle sunrise in Mengyuan Wonderland was very magnificent, so my boyfriend and I got up early in the morning hoping to enjoy the famous sunrise.

Heaven pays off. We entered the jungle just as the sun rose in the east. The moment it emerged, its beauty filled us with awe. Amidst the azure blue sky, layers of clouds emerged, first a golden halo, then a dazzling radiance instantly bathed the earth, even the dewdrops on the leaves were clearly visible. Although the dense jungle trees might have dimmed the sunlight slightly, it still couldn't dampen the dazzling brilliance of the sunrise.

It's really beautiful. If you want to watch the sunrise, Mengyuan Wonderland is definitely worth it.

I chose Mengyuan Wonderland over other destinations like Dali and Lijiang because I heard it has a wealth of authentic local cuisine. My decision proved to be a success, and the trip was well worth it. The Dai ethnic revelry, the tempting food, and the colorful water lanterns—I initially came here with the intention of just giving it a try, but I instantly felt I'd landed on the right spot. The locals are truly warm and down-to-earth, offering a warm smile whenever you pass them. It's a truly relaxing place for those working in the city!

South of the colorful clouds lies a place where Yao and Dai villages often hold large gatherings. Here, you can not only enjoy Dai and Yao dances, but even if you're willing to join in, the hospitable Dai or Yao will take your hand and invite you to join them! This place—Mengyuan Wonderland—is as natural, pristine, and beautiful as its name suggests.

It was early morning, before the sun rose, and the fog was thick. The occasional bird song echoed through the forest, something I'd never experienced in the city. A gentle breeze stirred the leaves, creating a rustling accompaniment. I followed the winding path up the mountain. The sun had just risen, but a thin mist still hung around, as if the clouds above were also lingering in a fairyland. The distant mountains grew hazy in the shadows of the clouds, their colors gradually fading as they approached. Before our group trip, when the organizer announced our destination, Xishuangbanna, Yunnan, the WeChat group erupted in excitement: "So far!" "Sob! My wallet's about to be empty again..." Actually, that wasn't the case. When we paid, we each only paid 370 yuan. Upon arrival, my photography enthusiast began documenting the trip! The highlight of this trip was visiting a Dai village. The Dai calendar was completely incomprehensible, but the illustrations were adorable. Finally, let's talk about the food. The stir-fried dishes had a salty and fragrant flavor. I highly recommend the lemongrass grilled fish, one of the signature dishes at Lover's Bridge Restaurant, which specializes in ethnic cuisine. I've always believed that eating fish doesn't make you fat, it can actually increase your IQ, and I think the spice blend was delicious! <・)))><< It was truly delicious! This trip is filled with joy, except for that one accidental fall while exiting the cave...

Some Dai villages are great for photography; we saw people taking artistic photos of folk dances! However, be careful when entering a village: If Dai people are offering sacrifices to the village deity, don't enter. Don't touch the heads of young monks. Always take off your shoes when visiting a temple. Once inside a Dai home, don't peek into the owner's bedroom or step over a tripod in the hall.

All in all, the scenic spot is generally good. I want to come again next time.

Next, I have to talk about the most important thing for foodies: food. Maybe it's because I haven't tried it before... I think everything in Wonderland is delicious! That natural, close-to-nature flavor is hard to replicate anywhere else! The bamboo rice, hand-pulled rice, and lemon chicken are all incredibly delicious! (I had the lemon chicken at an old man's house in the village. The people there are so welcoming, and if you're lucky enough, you can even get to eat at his home. It's a truly amazing experience!) The scenic area's speciality is the Rainforest Dinner, which is truly a feast! It's also worth a try!

Highly recommended, everyone! First, it's fun. Take the Jiutian Waterfall, for example. A massive rock face is carved with wavy lines, cascading down from the cave ceiling to the ground, resembling a flowing waterfall. The waterfall's top is unseen, a true testament to its "cascading down three thousand feet." Further along, you'll see karst formations shaped like horses, flying birds, elephants, and peacocks. These formations are scattered throughout the cave, as if heaven has replicated the earthly scenery below. It's truly breathtaking. Secondly, it's delicious. The famous local bamboo tube fish is prepared this way: clean small fish, mix with garlic, ginger, chili peppers, celery, and other seasonings, and then place them in a bamboo tube. Light a fire, place the bamboo tube in the fire pit, and wait until the tube turns from green to yellow. The combination of the fish's fresh flavor and the bamboo's delicate fragrance is unforgettable. Villagers say they grow all their own vegetables, never using pesticides. The fish is caught in the river, and the wild vegetables are harvested from the mountains—truly natural and pollution-free. There are also animals and plants in the rainforest that you have never seen before. It is really eye-opening!

Mysterious, lush, beautiful, dangerous, vibrant, and deadly—every tropical rainforest can be described with these contradictory phrases. It's because the rainforest is a place that captivates all adventurers. I'm not a true adventurer, but I just enjoy wandering and discovering things I've never personally known. The Amazon rainforest has long been renowned, but due to economic and geographical constraints, I sought opportunities to fulfill my desire within China. Yunnan was my first choice. I'd always known Xishuangbanna had a rich ethnic character, but I'd assumed it belonged to neighboring countries like Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand. I never imagined it actually belonged to Yunnan Province. How foolish!

When I first read other people’s travel guides, the first thing I noticed was Mengyuan Wonderland. Because I didn’t know the word “Meng” (meng), strange things are always attractive. It successfully attracted me, and then I was attracted to it!

After visiting Mengyuan Wonderland, I'm so glad I chose to go. It was so much fun. If it weren't for the classes I had to go back to, I wouldn't have wanted to leave. I highly recommend it! Pick, pick!

Until recently, I only knew Yunnan for its Cangshan Mountain and Erhai Lake, and also for Xishuangbanna. This time, I stumbled upon Mengyuan Wonderland by accident. The fairy-tale-like beauty makes me incredibly grateful for this unexpected encounter. There are so many things in Mengyuan Wonderland that amaze me, whether it's sitting on the ground enjoying a feast, walking barefoot on the moist soil (while incredibly comfortable, I still recommend bringing plenty of mosquito repellent and wearing shoes to avoid being targeted by jungle bugs), or simply sitting quietly by a flowing stream—it all makes my worries fade away. Mengyuan Wonderland is a perfect place to spend time alone. Occasionally changing my lifestyle while traveling has helped me become more comfortable with myself, so I'm recommending this magical place to you too!

The rainforest is the most beautiful (actually, it's a pretty good one, the only downside being the mosquitoes, which I personally find quite annoying). My favorite part is the Panwang Festival, or Danu Festival. Oh, it's a festival of the Yao people, who are known for their singing and dancing, fiery passion, and incredibly strong (muscles honed from acrobatics! So beautiful). Their rituals of worship, blessing, and exorcism often involve a series of extraordinary feats, two of which are breathtaking: climbing a ladder of knives barefoot and walking through a sea of fire. Since I hadn't heard much about the area before, and it was a bit far away, it took a lot of courage to come here. I have been to other places in Yunnan before, but maybe I didn’t like the overly strong commercial atmosphere, so my impression of it was not very good. Then this time I wanted to find a place with few people and beautiful scenery. I read a lot of travel guides and finally locked the location as Mengyuan Wonderland in Xishuangbanna.

As for transportation, the scenic area has a free shuttle bus. You can take the Mengla-bound bus from Xishuangbanna Bus Station to the Mengyuan exit. The shuttle bus will take you to the scenic area, so you don’t have to worry too much about transportation problems. It is quite convenient to go there.

The most noteworthy aspect of the scenic area is the lush tropical rainforest. When the sunlight streams through the forest, everything grows with abandon, and you can feel its vibrant vitality. The jungle trek is truly thrilling, so be sure to bring long sleeves and mosquito repellent. Besides the towering trees, the unnamed plants and insects at my feet also opened my eyes to the myriad of amazing plants.

When I arrived, I happened to catch the Water Splashing Festival. The feeling of revelry is still unforgettable. Everyone gathered together, splashing water, and wandering in the world of water was so refreshing and exciting! I also witnessed many ethnic minority customs, such as welcoming holy water, cockfighting, and releasing water lanterns. There was really a lot of activities here. And it feels like it's not as commercialized as some other scenic spots, so it's perfect for independent travel!

The roads in Mengyuan Wonderland are truly breathtakingly beautiful. Walking along, you're bathed in endless greenery, offering peace of mind even under the scorching sun. The green leaves reflect the sunlight, creating a lush, lush vista. The roadside is covered in moss, a variety of grasses, and shrubs, a completely different landscape from that found along city roadsides and in parks. This growth evokes a sense of primal, unfettered energy. Standing in the rainforest and taking a deep breath seems to allow this energy to permeate every cell of the body, filling one with vitality.

Mengyuan Wonderland is located in the beautiful Xishuangbanna, where it is like spring all year round. Here you can feel the mystery of Theravada Buddhism and experience the charm of Fushou culture. The most important thing is that it is an ecological tourism scenic spot that integrates mountains, water, stones, limestone monsoon rain forests, cave communities, Dai and Yao ethnic customs. Not only is the ecological environment on the ground beautiful, but the underground cave landscape is also very distinctive. In short, I felt its charm during the two days in Mengyuan Wonderland. Compared with other places I have visited, it is the most unique, and I think I will definitely come again.

The temperature inside the cave is constantly around 20 degrees Celsius, making it a true summer retreat. The one-kilometer walk took us nearly an hour.
