Dafo Temple Prayer Wheel

大佛寺转经筒

The cylinder is made of pure copper plated with gold. The four great bodhisattvas, Manjusri, Samantabhadra, Guanyin and Ksitigarbha, are carved in relief on the top of the cylinder wall. The eight treasures of Buddhism are carved on the bottom. There are about 1.24 million sutras, mantras and mantras without words and various Buddhist treasures weighing about 16 tons in the cylinder. To rotate such a huge cylinder, four strong men need to exert their strength at the same time. Each clockwise rotation is equivalent to silently chanting the Buddha's name 1.24 million times. After three full rotations, disasters can be eliminated and blessings can be prayed for, and good luck and good fortune can be achieved.

Prayer wheel in Dafo Temple: The auspicious victory prayer wheel is 21 meters high and weighs 6 tons. It is made of pure copper and has the seven treasures of Buddhism carved on the exterior. It requires at least four people to push it together to turn it. It is the largest and heaviest gold-plated pure copper prayer wheel in the world and has been included in the Guinness Book of Records. It contains 12.4 billion Tibetan characters of the six-character mantra "Om, Ma, Ni, Mi, Mi, Hum". The outside of the tower is cast with brass with the four great bodhisattvas of Guanyin, Manjusri, Samantabhadra, and Ksitigarbha, eight wonderful sound dakini, snow-capped mountains, rivers, forests, villages and other images. The top is a canopy representing victory and development. The upper part is engraved with an excerpt from "Shambhala Praise" written by the Sixth Panchen Lama. The lower part is a statue of unity and harmony of various ethnic groups and the traditional auspicious eight treasures of Tibetans. The top of the cylinder is a round "umbrella cover" that is significantly larger than the diameter of the cylinder body. The wheel seat is a huge ball bearing, and the outer periphery of the bearing is a large ring made of stainless steel pipe with a diameter of about ten centimeters. There is a cloth strip on the ring, which is used by multiple people to pull the prayer wheel! Each clockwise rotation is equivalent to chanting the Buddha's name 1.24 million times, which has infinite merits, and it needs to be rotated according to the number of 3/6/9 circles.

This gold tube is indeed the largest one I have ever seen. It requires a lot of people to turn it, which shows that unity is strength!

By Cinderella |

It has a nice name called "Auspicious Victory Banner". But in Tibetan areas, you cannot walk counterclockwise around the temple, so we have to walk clockwise around the Big Buddha Temple before we can get down to the prayer wheel.

When we came to this huge prayer wheel, we had to turn it once. But there were too few of us and we couldn't turn it at all. Later, a few young men came and we turned it with difficulty.

By Shi Churenqing |

Walk to the largest prayer wheel in Guishan Park, which is also the highest point that tourists can reach in the park. Now you can overlook the ancient city from here. The quaint Tibetan wooden houses are spread out one after another in front of you.

The prayer wheel is so big that one or two people can't turn it. My husband and I waited for a while, and a few more tourists came, and then we worked together to turn the prayer wheel. While turning it, I made a wish in my heart, and I believe that other people were praying silently like me.

By Glacier |

It is said to be the largest prayer wheel in the world. It was turned three times. It would be impossible without more than a dozen people. It is also a commanding point from which you can have a bird's eye view of the entire Shangri-La County.

The world's largest prayer wheel. It is said that people who turn it three times will gain peace and happiness. Almost everyone who comes here will turn it, and of course I am one of them, because it is said that one person cannot turn it.

There is the world's largest prayer wheel in Guishan Park, which requires the joint efforts of several people to turn it. Looking at this five-story high prayer wheel, I was not only amazed at people's lofty beliefs, but also followed others to turn it three times, praying for the safety and health of my family in my heart.

Walking along the stone road into the ancient city, you can see the world's largest prayer wheel.

This is a good location to overlook the panoramic view of the ancient city. The surrounding incense adds to the charm of the ancient city.

By Great quality |

The prayer wheel is a sacred existence here and can be seen from far away. People come together to turn it very early every day. It is impossible for one person to turn it alone. I heard that most people turn it three times. It is not known whether it is the cycle of reincarnation or not.

By A Guang |

From time to time, devout believers would push the prayer wheel with great effort. It is said that those who turn it three times can pray for blessings and good luck. I also followed the believers and turned it three times with sincere prayers. Secondly, you can overlook the entire ancient city from here, which is very spectacular.

The huge prayer wheel emits a golden and sacred light in the dark night. The body of the prayer wheel is made of pure copper plated with gold. The upper end of the wall is engraved with reliefs of Manjusri, Samantabhadra, Guanyin, and Ksitigarbha, and the lower end is engraved with the Eight Treasures of Buddhism. It is very exquisite. It is said that there are 1.24 million sutras, mantras, and mantras without words and various Buddhist treasures hidden in the wheel. Every clockwise rotation is equivalent to silently chanting the Buddha's name 1.24 million times. After three rotations, you can pray for good luck and good fortune. Seeing that there were already several people spinning the prayer wheel, I hurried to join them. At the beginning, the inertia of the prayer wheel made me spin so fast that I had to run to push it, which caused a lot of laughter. I turned more than ten times in a row, panting. Finally, there were fewer people, so I really tried my best.

By Good night |

Duzongke Ancient City has the world's largest prayer wheel, which is a highlight of the ancient city. As it is more than 20 meters high, it is a bit difficult to take panoramic photos nearby. My parents and I turned the prayer wheel to pray for our family. The prayer wheel weighs more than 60 tons. There was a short period of time when only the three of us turned it, which was very strenuous. Later, as more people came, it became relatively easy.

But one day, he suddenly video chatted with me because he went to a scenic spot and wanted to show it to me. I felt very warm in my heart, and I am always moved by such small things.

The prayer wheel is located in the square of the ancient city. You can see it at a glance. You need to climb a flight of stairs. After going up, you are out of breath. The Buddhist temple above is not big, but there are many people praying by the prayer wheel. The prayer wheel needs to be turned clockwise for an odd number to be considered a prayer, and counterclockwise for an even number is a curse. Don't turn it wrong. Tibetans have great respect for Buddhist temples. They have their own beliefs and principles. They are very pious and beautiful.

The world's largest prayer wheel towers over the Big Buddha Temple in Guishan Park near the ancient city of Shangri-La. I turned it three times, which was quite strenuous. There are Tibetan mastiffs and doves of peace in the center of the square. The Dukezong Ancient City is still under restoration. The fire that year caused great damage to the ancient city. Only one-third of its original appearance remains, and the rest are restored.

When I arrived at Shangri-La, the prayer wheels on the mountain caught my eye. I had the impression that the temple was average in size, a typical Tibetan Mahayana Buddhist temple. The statues and sculptures were somewhat different in form from those in the mainland, and there were also murals. I turned the large prayer wheel clockwise for a week and prayed... and then I came back.

By Wind Coke |

This seems to be called the Shangri-La Prayer Wheel, which is said to be the largest prayer wheel in the world. I went there on January 4, 2018. It was snowing in Shangri-La at that time and the ground was quite slippery. There were 7 or 8 of us turning it together, praying for ourselves or our families. We were told to turn it at least 3 times with a pious heart.
