Dukezong Ancient Town is the best-preserved and largest Tibetan settlement complex in China, and is also the hub of the Ancient Tea-Horse Road. In the construction of the ancient city, most of the building materials were locally sourced. Craftsmen discovered that a kind of white clay produced locally could be used as paint for the exterior walls of houses, so the exterior walls of the houses in the ancient city were all painted white, and this style has been used to this day. On a moonlit night, the silver moonlight makes the white ancient city look particularly charming, so the locals called the ancient city "Dukzong". "Dukzong" means white stone city in Tibetan, implying the moonlight city.

PS: The most interesting things to see in the ancient city are the buildings/Guishan Park/Moonlight Square; photography is not allowed inside the Big Buddha Temple in Guishan Park; the huge prayer wheel in Guishan Park requires many people to turn, and it also has to turn three times clockwise; there are not many tourists in the ancient city, I don't know if it is because winter is the off-season.'

Like Lijiang Ancient Town, Dukezong Ancient Town also has a large square in the center, and people are happily dancing the Guozhuang dance one after another in the center of the old town. I also tried to dance one or two songs, but found that as long as the tune changed, the steps were completely different. The steps I just memorized in the previous song were completely useless in the next song. In the end, I decided to just be a spectator. Dukezong Ancient Town in winter is different from the ancient town that is crowded in summer. I don’t know if it’s because the temperature is too low or it’s not the peak tourist season, the old streets in the ancient town are very lonely in winter. It was so cold that I even lost interest in taking pictures

Dukezong Ancient Town is much quieter than it was four years ago. Even during the National Day holiday, the inns in the ancient town were full, and it was good enough if there were people staying there. Later, I asked the owner of the inn and found out the reason. "Kun, Dali, Shangri-La" has always been the order of many people's first trip to Yunnan (we did the same back then), and Shangri-La is usually the last stop. However, in the past two years, travel agencies in Lijiang have begun to vigorously promote the local "Shangri-La Two-Day Tour" project, which directly took over the flow of people in Lijiang. For convenience and to visit the Tiger Leaping Gorge scenic spot on the way, tourists directly signed up for this two-day tour group. This group mainly takes tourists to Songzanlin Temple, Pudacuo, Dukezong Ancient Town and other scenic spots in Shangri-La. The stay time is very short, and accommodation will also be arranged in the city's express hotel, so there are almost no tour groups in the ancient town during the day, and there are very few people.

Anyway, it is the best for us tourists. Such a quiet Dukezong made me fall in love with Shangri-La. If you want to find a quiet place to spend your vacation in China, Dali is no longer the best option, but Shangri-La.

The ancient city is not big. From north to south, it is almost a straight line from North Gate - Sifang Street - Guishan Park - Moonlight Square - South Gate Parking Lot. You can walk around and visit various boutiques and specialty shops that are almost the same all over the country. Occasionally, you can see the life scenes of the indigenous people at the forks in the road. In the middle are Guishan Park and Moonlight Square. There is a super large prayer wheel in Guishan Park that can be pushed manually by more than ten people. It is also very fun.

The ancient city has been restored and rebuilt. When we went there, we could still see unfinished buildings on some streets. Locals said that although a lot of money has been invested, following the principle of "repairing the old as it is", and houses are built according to Tibetan civil structures and artificially aged, this is no longer the ancient city where they grew up for generations. It always makes me sad to hear that.

Every night, local residents form a circle in the square to dance the Guozhuang dance, which attracts many tourists. Although it is still drizzling, it cannot stop everyone's enthusiasm. More and more people join in, and the circle is getting bigger and bigger. There are also many international friends who follow the people next to them and learn clumsily and seriously. I also followed to join in the fun, but my hands and feet are a bit clumsy.

Located in the southeast corner of Shangri-La County, Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Dukezong Ancient City was built by the Tubo Dynasty in the Tang Dynasty. "Dukezong" is a Tibetan word meaning "moonlight city" and "castle built on stone". The ancient city was built on the mountain, and the road surface was paved with stone slabs according to the terrain, with natural ups and downs. To this day, you can even see the marks of horse hooves on the stone road, which is a token left by the horse caravans long ago.



The architectural layout of the ancient city is like an eight-petal lotus, with Moonlight Square in the center. Surrounding it are quaint Tibetan wooden houses, where local people live peacefully. To the west of the square is Big Turtle Mountain, also known as Turtle Mountain Park. On the top of Turtle Mountain is the world's largest prayer wheel that is listed in the Guinness World Records. It takes three people to turn it together. On the northwest side of Turtle Mountain Park, Sifang Street, the Tibetan Guozhuang dance every night always attracts a large number of tourists to participate. The courtyard on the north side of Moonlight Square is the "Diqing Prefecture Red Army Long March Museum". The entrance to the museum is the Central Town Hall built in the Qing Dynasty, also known as the Sutra Hall. The architectural style integrates Han, Tibetan and Naxi styles, and is quite ornamental. To the south of the Long March Museum is the Diqing Prefecture Museum. The museum displays Neolithic relics and Tibetan medicine. You may want to come and see them.



Most of the houses in the ancient city have been converted into inns, restaurants and shops. The shops sell local Tibetan knives, yak meat, Tibetan jewelry, etc. The restaurants mainly serve Sichuan and Tibetan cuisine. Don't miss the yak beef hot pot, butter tea, tsampa, etc. Most of the inns are mainly Tibetan-style, and the price is slightly higher than that of the New City Hotel, but they have a strong local flavor and are crowded with people every day.



The Dukezong fire on January 11, 2014, turned a large area of ​​Tibetan houses into ruins, which is a pity. However, wandering around, you can still recognize the glory of the ancient city.

The ancient city has a strong Tibetan style and is well worth a visit, especially the Guishan Park in the ancient city, which has the world's largest prayer wheel. You must go and see it. Most of them were newly built after the fire. They are all travel photos, and the locations are the same. If the hotel you stay in is not really good, a one-night stopover will be enough.

Although the food in Tibetan areas is not good, there are both Chinese and Western food in the city. After all, the name of Shangri-La here will attract many foreigners. Of course not, because Dukezong is very small and you can't run far even if you want to.

In the Tang Dynasty, northwestern Yunnan (including Diqing area) belonged to the Tubo Dynasty. In 676-679, Tubo established the Shenchuan Governor's Office in Weixi Qizong, built an official camp in today's Dagui Mountain, and built a city with stones. The city was named "Dukezong", which is the famous "Iron Bridge East City" in history.

Management can be improved, parking is difficult, and the alleys are crowded.

There is a Tibetan Buddhist temple and a large prayer wheel in Guishan Park in Dukezong Ancient Town. Both are free to visit.

The driver of the car rental chatted with us while driving and said that he actually felt that Dukezong Ancient Town was similar to Songzanlin Temple. He wanted to suggest that we just not go there when we went to Songzanlin Temple. The temples in Dukezong Ancient Town were the same, and Dukezong Ancient Town was free. But I think that Songzanlin Temple has a very unique appearance and is still worth visiting.

The temple in Dukezong Ancient Town is relatively small, and it takes at least five or six people to turn the prayer wheel. I heard that according to custom, it should be turned at least three times.

Arriving at the ancient city, I can only use two words to describe it: "cold" and "empty". It was even colder than Yubeng. There was no one on the streets of the ancient city. The Monkey King was walking on the street with his baby banana and baby crocodile on his back. It felt desolate.

Many of the buildings we see now were rebuilt later, but the rebuilt ancient city still retains its original appearance. The owner of the inn said that the number of tourists here dropped sharply after the fire, and it does feel desolate walking on the streets, but this is its unique flavor. There is no need to look or think, time has really slowed down, and we are the only ones left in the whole world.

After visiting so many ancient cities, my favorite is Dukezong Ancient City, probably because it has not been over-commercialized. However, a fire a few years ago burned down the ancient city, and now what we see is the rebuilt ancient city, which is a pity.

In the off-season, the night in Dukezong Ancient Town is very sparsely populated, the pace is very slow, quiet but not lonely, which deeply touched me and my heart.

Although it is not that prosperous, there are few people and it is very comfortable.

I strolled through the quietest alleys of the ancient city and felt extremely comfortable.

The ancient city is not big and can be visited in one or two hours on foot. The commercial streets are mainly distributed in the north of the ancient city, and the inns are mainly distributed in the south and east. There is a Guishan Park in the center of the city. There is a big Buddhist temple on Guishan Mountain. The world's largest prayer wheel stands majestically in the temple.

The buildings in the ancient city are basically made of wood, and the wooden carvings on the doorheads are very delicate. Under the light, the sense of history and culture is overflowing.

The ancient city is just like Lijiang, with clean ground and well-arranged houses.

Of course, when you are in the ancient city, you can’t miss food. I recommend you to find a yak beef hotpot restaurant in the ancient city. Yak beef hotpot is really delicious.

Walking around Dukezong Ancient Town, there is no commercialization like other ancient towns. At least what is sold here are traditional cultural works, such as thangka and Tibetan embroidery. I have an admiration for artworks, especially those made by hand. The lazy animals that can be seen everywhere in the ancient town will make people lazy. If you were in Guanzhong, you would be laughed at if you had grass growing on the eaves of your house, but the customs here are different.

The ancient city rebuilt after the fire still looks vaguely like what I remember. Compared with Lijiang Old Town, it is much quieter here, different from the fresh style of Lijiang, but the unique Tibetan architecture has its own flavor!

What impressed me most was the big prayer wheel.

It was a rest stop on the ancient trade route and gradually developed into a small town.

There are very few people in Dukezong Ancient Town, and it feels sparsely populated. There are also relatively few shops, all of which sell Tibetan accessories, silverware, knives, and warm clothes. The people eating are all eating Niu Niu Hotpot. There are almost no people on the street. We didn't see the lively crowd until we walked to the square. We avoided the busy gate and chose a more remote location. We walked for a while, slowed down for a while, and stopped to catch our breath. My discomfort was not particularly obvious. I saw the local residents who loved dancing dancing, so I ran into the circle and danced with them for a while. It was quite interesting.

When visiting Dukezong Ancient Town at night, the White Pagoda under the lights looks different from that in the daytime, especially in the dead of night, it looks even more sacred.

From Dali to Shangri-La, it seems that we can never leave the ancient city. Each ancient city has a similar commercial atmosphere, but it has different characteristics, different architectural styles, and different environments. In Shangri-La, Dukezong Ancient City is quiet. Walking in the quiet streets, looking at the prayer wheels not far away, listening to the songs floating from the bar, there is no audience. Only when you look up can you find the guitar singer singing solo under the dark blue light by the window. Every traveler will yearn for a quiet place to return to, which is the scenery that you never get tired of seeing after traveling to so many places.

There are two places I like best in the ancient city. One is the post station, where you can write letters to your friends far away. There is a place where you can sit down and write slowly, and there is a layer of glass between the street and me. That night, my friend and I stayed until the store was about to close, and at that time there were still foreign tourists writing seriously in the store.

There is another place, a small shop. The passage is only wide enough for one person to walk through. There are two owners in the shop, one is a traveler who has traveled all over the world, and the other is a painter. When you are tired or want to talk, you can do it here. People who have walked a lot and heard a lot of stories always have more insight and clarity than ordinary people. Sometimes, telling those stories in your heart to strangers is a good choice.

There are really rare treasures gathered here, including various cordyceps, saffron, tea, jewelry, jade and so on. I heard that the goods are genuine and the prices are guaranteed, and people who need them can really find good stuff.

There is no place with local characteristics. The prayer wheel in Guishan Park is quite attractive.

Dukezong Ancient Town is quite deserted, maybe it’s a bit late

Dukezong Ancient City is also called Moonlight City. The night view is great. From a distance, there are many people in the square, but you will still feel deserted in the city. I like to look down so that you can see the panoramic view better. There are sun and moon, moonlight, and auspicious Shangri-La... Turn the golden cylinder, turn 3 times, auspicious... The shops here are full of Tibetan elements. If you believe in Buddhism or like Tibetan culture, this must be your paradise. The streets here are retro, even if you can occasionally see traces of renovation... But we can't stop it from being hurt. The interior of the ancient city is very large, and there are many small roads, but you won't get lost, believe me. I think on the street, you can't imagine the injuries it has suffered. There are not many people on the street, it's very quiet, and there are many shops on the surrounding roads that have not yet opened. But buying postcards here and writing them to friends you like is also a beautiful thing.

The moonlit city of Dukezong at night attracts a large number of tourists. If you have never been here before, you will not know how charming it is! Although most of the vendors in the ancient city sell specialties, there are also bar guys and roadside musicians singing folk songs from time to time. I really want to sit in a bar, cafe or bar and listen to the soothing tunes.

There is also a huge prayer wheel here. In order to save time, I did not touch it up close. I could only watch it from a distance and marvel at it.
