Yunnan Railway Museum

云南铁路博物馆

Located at 913 Beijing Road, Kunming, the Yunnan Railway Museum, housed in the former waiting room of Kunming North Railway Station, opened in 2004. The museum showcases the history of Kunming's railways, particularly its meter-gauge railway artifacts. Among them is a French Michelin diesel-powered train, designated a national first-class cultural relic. This high-end business train, with rubber tires, entered service in 1914 and was used exclusively by senior Chinese and French officials.
The Yunnan Railway Museum, covering a total area of 3,176 square meters, houses and displays over 9,500 historical documents and photographs related to the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway. Among the exhibits are the "Michelin locomotive" and other locomotive parts, including passenger and freight cars that once operated on the railway. Using striking color contrasts and visual techniques of sound, light, and electricity, the museum showcases the railway's century-long history. As the only museum in my country dedicated to the history of local railway development, the Yunnan Railway Museum stands as a testament to the history of old China and an indelible chapter in Yunnan's modern history.
The Yunnan Railway Museum is now a national and Yunnan provincial railway patriotism education base.
The Yunnan Railway Museum, which embodies the century-long vicissitudes of the Yunnan section of the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway, opened on December 28, 2004.
The meter-gauge railway from Kunming to Hekou of the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway, built by French colonialists, began construction in 1903 and officially started operation in 1910. It has accumulated rich historical and cultural resources due to its arduous and magnificent construction and its operational history that spans time.

Located at 913 Beijing Road, Kunming, the Yunnan Railway Museum, renovated from the former waiting room of Kunming North Railway Station, opened in 2004. It showcases the history of Kunming's railways. Due to its unique historical and cultural value, it has been designated a National Youth Education Base, a National Railway and Yunnan Provincial Patriotism Education Base, and a Yunnan Provincial Science Education Base. Tickets are 10 yuan per person.

The main reason for coming here is to take the kids out for a walk. The two little boys love trains the most and are very involved.

The museum is located in Kunming North Railway Station, but its transportation function has been largely lost due to the subway being under renovation and the lack of the bustling atmosphere of a train station. Luggage storage is free.

Standing on the corridor bridge of the third-floor exhibition hall, you can overlook the various trains and carriages on the first floor.

There are many trains in the Railway Museum. It is a paradise for children to visit. However, children should be reminded to speak quietly during the visit. It is very meaningful to learn about some important events in the history of Yunnan Railway. You can take the subway or bus in the city to the North Railway Station. The ticket is 10 yuan. However, you can no longer enter after 4 pm. It is closed on Mondays.

The Michelin locomotive in the Yunnan Railway Museum is really interesting and a completely different experience.

And the gatekeeper is very friendly and will introduce you to various knowledge

The point is that he seems to have forgotten to collect my ticket money.

By Tuuuuuu |

Children will be more interested in it. It is recommended. It is in the city and can be reached by subway.

By Tianke |

It's OK, but you can't take the train when you go there. It's not easy to build a railway in Yunnan, and there are many tunnels.

By Raspberry |

The yellow house is what the train station used to look like.

The history of the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway tells us that a country will not be oppressed only when it is prosperous and strong.

The first floor lobby displays various types of trains from different eras.

My son looked at every display board very carefully.

By Orange Deer |

The Yunnan Railway Museum is a place worth visiting. It condenses the century-long history of Yunnan Railway. The ticket price is 10 yuan.

By Visitors from the South |

Some beekeepers have mentioned before that the train is no longer available. Today, even the original tracks have been paved with cement. Train enthusiasts who want to take pictures of the tracks should be aware that you can still walk into the original tracks within 300 meters of the museum. Just walk to the right after leaving the museum entrance. You will see a small path on the right. Walk 300 meters along the path and you will see

The former Kunming North Railway Station, also the starting point of the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway, houses a beautiful railway museum steeped in history. For ten yuan, you can enter and learn about the history of the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway. Besides historical presentations, the museum also offers insights into the status of Yunnan railways and some of the main lines in Southwest China. There's even a display of locomotives—a must-see for train enthusiasts.

The Yunnan Railway Museum is located at No. 913 Beijing Road, Kunming City. It was built using the waiting room of Kunming North Railway Station. It opened in 2004 and mainly displays the development history of Kunming Railway, especially the meter-gauge railway relics.

The museum boasts a floor area of 7,963 square meters and an exhibition area of 5,155 square meters. It houses or displays over 10,000 cultural relics and documents, including eight first-class, 10 second-class, and 123 third-class artifacts. It embodies the century-long history of Yunnan Railway. By Mu Yi Yadan |

There are many first-class cultural relics locomotives made in Germany, Britain, etc. It is worth a visit.

By Your Haiyue |

The ticket costs ten yuan, and there are various locomotives on display. The display is pretty good, but it seems that it is often closed.

By The more you walk, the freer you become |

The Yunnan-Vietnam Railway is steeped in history, and the privately-owned Gebishi Railway is even lesser-known. You can get a close-up look at it here. The exhibits are also fascinating, and the Michelin-starred train Soong Mei-ling once rode is incredibly adorable. You can also ride the meter-gauge train here, but it's not well-developed, so the ride and scenery aren't great.

A paradise for railway lovers, you can go and check it out!

By Lemongrass สุวคนธ2 |

My child loves the railway and had a great time yesterday. The only regret is that I didn’t know about this museum before and didn’t get to ride the millet railway. The child said it was a pity that he didn’t get to walk on the railway.

By Water cup |

I went to the Railway Museum and wanted to take a train, but was told it was out of service due to subway construction. When I asked when it would resume, I was told it would probably take three or four years.

By Hurricane Spell |

Well worth a visit. Lots of information about trains. You can also ride on a meter gauge train.

By Xuan Miao is a grain of corn |

The Yunnan Railway Museum, founded in April 1990, formerly housed the Yunnan Narrow Gauge Railway History Exhibition Hall in the waiting room of Kaiyuan Railway Station. I decided to visit after seeing numerous recommendations. The collection is quite good, offering a glimpse into the history of trains and a wealth of train-related exhibits.

❤Address: No. 913, Beijing Road, Kunming, next to Kunming North Railway Station. Free admission.

Attention, the only passenger on the train.

The train you are on is bound for a magical destination.

There are laughter and joy, and there are flowers everywhere.

There are the most ordinary miracles,

Can make love always consistent,

That's where my heart is.

By Cello |

It mainly explains the history of the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway and is well worth a visit! Admission is free. You can take the meter-gauge train nearby for a one-way ticket of 1 or 2 yuan (depending on the distance). However, Kunming's meter-gauge trains are primarily used for commuting rather than tourism, so the trains are generally less sanitary.

By What the hell is a name? |

North Railway Station, a place with rich local characteristics, is worth a visit

By Qianxi chestnut |

Get off at the North Railway Station on the subway. Tickets are 10 yuan, half price with student ID. This is the starting point of the original Yunnan-Vietnam Railway. Two trains depart from here every day. The museum showcases the history and style of Yunnan Railway and houses many locomotives, including the "Spring City" from the 1999 World Expo.

By Asian fish |

The museum is worth a visit. You can see the care put into its layout. It is a good place to learn about the history of Yunnan Railway. Friends who like humanities should not miss it.

!!! The basic information of China-TravelNote is wrong, please refer to my first picture!!!

No entry allowed after 4 o'clock

There is a cafe next to the museum. It has the same atmosphere as the museum, with a sense of history and a very romantic atmosphere. The price is normal, and a glass of water costs 18+. It is a good place to take a break after walking around.

Disadvantages: the ticket seller is the same as the state-owned enterprise, very lazy

!

PS

1. There is no postcard as souvenir, very disappointed

2 There are no water or food stalls inside. There is only a place decorated as a Harmony dining car at the end of the tour. It is probably not open when there are few people.

3. The elevator was not open when I went there, so people with mobility issues should be aware of this.

It is worth a visit. It tells the story of the century-old Yunnan-Vietnam Railway and the scenery along the way, showing the development process of Yunnan Railway. The key is that you can also take the "little train" that is still in operation.

By Little Wild Horse |

Although there is an entrance fee (10 yuan is really not expensive), friends who are interested in Yunnan railway culture cannot miss this attraction! The documentary they produced, "The Little Train Across the Century", is very touching! ! ! !

By Turnips |

This is the only meter-gauge railway still in operation in the country.

By Passersby also return home |

The location is remote, with few people and quiet. I walked around quietly and felt it was pretty good. Is there no entrance fee or is it half price for students at 5 yuan? I forgot, but it's not expensive anyway.

By Crispy Fish with Mustard Sauce |

I love this place very much. I like to look at old items and listen to the stories of the older generation about their time. There are many introductions to the former Kunming Railway Station, and you can also experience the meter-gauge train... I spent the whole afternoon playing there without realizing it.

By Kaokaosheshe |

I've taken my kids there three times, all for the train ride and once inside the museum. It's well worth seeing and very meaningful. But my son absolutely loves the train ride. A round-trip ticket costs 2 yuan for adults, and you board a little after 10:00 AM and return to the boarding point at 12:30 PM. Lots of grandparents with their kids riding the train and playing. It's a great place to spend some time.

Kunming is my second hometown because I like Kunming snacks very much.

By Little Sun |

The museum will not open until October, so it is not open to the public. The train station is on the left side of the museum, so you can still take it. Waiting for it to open at 10 o'clock

By Fish that can't swim |

Closed for maintenance from May 23, 2016, reopening time unknown

I wanted to visit the Railway Museum right after arriving in Kunming, but it was closed for renovations when I got there, so I made a wasted trip. I recommend asking around before going.

It's good. If you like trains, you can go and see it. I don't feel anything. It's a pity that you can't take the meter gauge train.

By Also thirteen |

It's quite good. Friends with good photos can find a good angle to take pictures, but you can't go up, so you can only see the outside of the train. Those who are interested in this area can go and see it, there are many detailed introductions.

By Look at this handsome guy |

You can take the kids around; an hour is plenty. Tickets are 10 yuan, and seniors and children are free. You can also take the train, which costs 1 yuan round trip and runs from 10:00 to 12:00. Kids love it, and on weekends, many elderly people take the train with their kids.

Yunnan is one of the first provinces in China to have railways. As a witness to a series of major events in modern China, trains have important significance in this land. As one of the few railway museums in China, it provides visitors with a detailed introduction to the past, present and future of Yunnan Railway trains, and also has very important physical objects for us to get close to. Of course, the most important thing is that there is still a railway in operation, allowing visitors to experience a different train style.

By Mystery of the Blue Bird |

One of Yunnan's 18 strange things is that trains run internationally, not domestically. This refers to the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway, a meter-gauge railway built by French colonists from Haiphong, Vietnam, to Kunming. Until recently, national trains ran to Hanoi, but now, except for a section serving commuters in Kunming, the rest of the domestic section is closed. After experiencing the meter-gauge railway from Hekou to Lao Cai in Vietnam, visiting this museum was a unique experience. Now, the standard-gauge Kunhe Railway runs from Kunming to Hekou...

By Posada |

There's a fantastic train exhibition inside, featuring authentic trains from modern times to the present day. Train enthusiasts should definitely consider this. However, you're not allowed inside the trains. There's also a display of valuable historical materials, including paper, molds, and videos. The adorable train models are especially worth a visit.

By k2kang |

If you are a train enthusiast, you must go here! It records the history of trains and tracks in Yunnan, starting from the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway. There are several sets of locomotives from different periods. This is a place worth visiting.

By I don't know what I'm talking about |

It boasts China's earliest locomotive and the only Michelin locomotive in existence. You can also experience riding on China's earliest railway, the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway.

By I am a tree |

Train fans are worth a visit, the Southwest Railway is a must-see museum, although there are a few things.

By piggyzhu |

Here you can learn about the history of railways and trains. There are relatively few people and the ticket price seems to be 10 yuan. It is worth a visit.

By steak and red wine |

A must-see for all train enthusiasts interested in meter gauge railway, the history of Yunnan-Vietnam Railway, and more.

By Forest Traveler |

It's actually quite small and can be seen in 10 minutes. The entrance fee is 10 yuan, but there is a fixed closing time every day, so you have to arrive before 4 pm.

By Occasionally habit |

A paradise for railway enthusiasts, it's also a must-see for even casual railway enthusiasts. Whether it's the imposing white Michelin locomotive, the red postal train, the green Yunnan-Vietnam passenger train, or the yellow wooden carriages, history passes before your eyes, a visual and tangible impact. Then, ride the Dongfanghong through the bustling city, witnessing the people and encountering vibrant flowers.

By Che Qing |

There were few people at the Railway Museum during the off-season, and the security guard was very kind to help us take photos.

By Black and White_Scholar |

The ticket price is 10 yuan. It is a very interesting museum with many things from old trains and old stations, as well as a section of abandoned tracks. Unfortunately, the transportation is far away.

By Wind dances in the distance |

This place is very interesting. You can see many locomotives and carriages that are hard to see nowadays. Speaking of which, the carriages in the past felt more artistic.

By Campbell |

The Yunnan Railway Museum is one of the few railway museums in China. I remember there is also a railway museum in Beijing, but it is larger than the one in Yunnan. The Yunnan Railway Museum is not large, but it gives people a bright feeling. There are trains with tires that cannot be seen outside, as well as trains that are mainly made of wood, and detailed introductions to various track trains. The tickets are not expensive, but you can learn a lot of knowledge. Thumbs up!

By the climb |

The ticket price is 10 yuan per person, and it displays various train models that originally ran in Yunnan, which is very interesting.

By release |

The basic history of the train is displayed, and I like the green train the most

By Xin. |

From Kunming North Station, only a small section of the former Yunnan-Vietnam Railway remains operational. The small train on the tracks is the museum's treasure and a must-see for train enthusiasts.

By yjiayou |

The southwest region has a complex topography, and the railways are built in a unique way. This is why the Yunnan Railway Museum was established. The exhibits there are very interesting.

By Ben taking photos |

A very artistic place, but be careful, it is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays

By The sky is so big, the earth is so big |

You can learn about the history of the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway and see old locomotives, which is worth a visit. You can also take a meter-gauge train through the city - one yuan per hour to Shizui.

By OoKelly |

Arrived at Yunnan Railway Museum early in the morning, looked at the timetable (the timetable will be updated), and waited to enter the station.

We got on the shabby green train. The windows could be opened and the seats were made of old-fashioned leather. Many people took the train with their children. It took about two hours from the starting station to the terminal. We watched the scenery and people along the way. When the train passed a certain city intersection, the guardrail was lowered and people were pushing bicycles.

Or riding an electric bike, looking up at the train passing by, and we, looking out the window of the car, feel very childhood, very childhood. This is the meter gauge I want,

A retro nostalgic feeling.

By blacat |

This museum is built next to a train station and displays a lot of historical information about the construction of Yunnan Railway. It should be relatively complete. Here you can especially learn about some of the historical conditions of the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway.

There are various types of rails from different periods, images and materials of the tools used to build railways in the past, and most importantly, there are some trains from different periods that can be seen here. It is really an eye-opener and a must-see for train fans!

By Pan Nono Point |

The Railway Museum was mentioned in a girl’s travelogue, so we added it to our itinerary, but... the pictures don’t match the real thing. Why can’t we take pictures of it that look fresh and natural?

By Kitten walks around |

The Yunnan Railway Museum ticket price is 10 RMB for adults, and 50% off for students. I didn't have my student ID with me when I went there, so I told the ticket seller I forgot to bring my ID, and she tore off a student ticket for me anyway.

By Teacher Liu |

After the visit, I gained a lot and gained a comprehensive understanding of the history of Yunnan railway development.

By Walking and shooting |

This exhibition hall embodies the history of China's railways and is closely linked to the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway. As China's first railway to be nominated for World Heritage, the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway has a heavy history that needs no further explanation. The fact that it is one of the few meter-gauge railways still in operation in China makes it worth visiting the exhibition hall to learn more about it.

By Walking on the clouds |

Although I am a local, I have heard of this place for a long time, but I have never been there. Last year, I took the time to take my children there. It felt great. There is the history of the development of Yunnan Railway, and there are many locomotives that I have never seen. The museum was also rebuilt in the French architectural style of the time. It is very good.

By mumbling |

The French Michelin passenger diesel multiple unit that once ran on the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway is the "treasure of the museum" in the narrow-gauge locomotive and rolling stock museum of the Yunnan Railway Museum.

By Snow Willow in Smoke |

Last time I saw a girl’s trip to the Railway Museum and I was very interested. When I arrived in Kunming very early, I went to see the only remaining meter-gauge railway in the country and to see the former glory of the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway.

By JW1202 |

It is suitable for all ages and shows the construction process of Yunnan Railway. There are many herringbone bridges to find inside and outside.

By Asha Asha Asha Sha |

Although the ticket is ten yuan, I think it is worth it. There is a museum in the train station, a train station in the museum (Kunming North Station), and many antique trains.

By Nic |

We were not disappointed after our visit. The museum is really well done and the collection is very comprehensive. Not only does it have detailed introductions to the history of cultural relics, but it also has an exhibition of various models of old trains. When we went there, there were also many parents with children there to visit.

By ijerry |

Please note that the museum is open for a limited time and the meter-gauge train only runs twice a day. Please pay attention to the departure time.
