Wuma Street, formerly known as Wumafang, is the most famous commercial street in downtown Wenzhou. It underwent a thorough renovation in 2006, preserving its original appearance. Legend has it that Wumafang first existed when Wang Xizhi, the "Calligraphy Sage" of the Eastern Jin Dynasty, served as prefect of Yongjia County.

Wuma Street boasts several protected buildings from the Republican era, preserving its overall appearance. As it's a pedestrian street, parking is difficult, so I didn't find many people there. Unless you're visiting to see these protected buildings, shopping and dining can be done elsewhere.

Travel Notes in Wenzhou, Zhejiang

On the second night of our self-driving tour, I wanted to try some snacks at Wuma Street, but I missed the chance. The road was crowded and we didn’t arrive at Wuma Street until quite late due to traffic jam.

The car can be parked in the underground parking lot of Shamao Building. Those who are traveling by car can navigate to this location. You can relax when parking your car and we can also relax when shopping.

This street is very lively. Due to the Spring Festival, some shops are closed, marked by five horses. There are snacks, shopping, specialties, etc. There are also Shamao Street, Jiefang Street, etc. along the street, so you can't finish shopping in a day.

Wuma Street, often seen in textbooks, is considered a landmark. However, as a commercial street, it's actually quite run-down. The adjacent Shamao River Street has more character (food is the essence of being human), and places like the European City and the outlet mall are more appealing to young people. There are still some old buildings there, though, so if you're interested, you might want to visit. Overall, I wouldn't recommend it. While the location is a plus, the price isn't a big deal.

Wenzhou's Wuma Street: A historic commercial street, its cobblestone pavement speaks of a prosperous past. The sculpture of five galloping horses carries profound meaning. Lined with shops and offering a wide variety of snacks, this street blends modernity with ancient charm, and every step you take echoes the echoes of history.

On July 19, 2023, my father and I went to Wenzhou for a tour. Wuma Street is a famous commercial center and pedestrian street in Wenzhou. There are many delicious foods around it. My father and I must check it out.

By Twinkle Red Star |

Wuma Pedestrian Street is nothing new, just a cookie-cutter commercial street.

By Duoer~ |

For locals, it is a place to hang out. For tourists, it is a place to join in the fun. The viewing value has been eroded by commercialism.

By China-TravelNote users |

If you haven't been here, it's still worth a visit. There are shops selling clothes and shoes on both sides of the road, and you can also stroll around Fuqian Street and Jiefang Street on both sides.

By Where do fallen leaves return to? |

When I have free time, I often come here to eat together and go shopping with my girlfriend in the shoe store. In Wenzhou, I feel that leather shoes are cheap and there are discounts every day. I remember there was no time when there was no discount.

By China-TravelNote users |

The street is not long and is quite clean. You can also stroll around the nearby streets and you might find something new.

By Zhou Chaoren |

It's just like the pedestrian streets in many cities, but the Shamao River next to it is quite unique.

By Suxia |

It's like Xiamen's Zhongshan Road Pedestrian Street or Shanghai's Nanjing Road—every city has a street like this, brimming with designer stores. After a short stroll, I came across two or three Red Dragonfly stores. As a loyal Red Dragonfly customer, I naturally wanted to check out this local branch, which even sells clothing.

A must-visit pedestrian street in Wenzhou city, a paradise for shopping and food

By Lin Xiaobin |

Wenzhou's iconic shopping pedestrian street is also the oldest street and the most prosperous central area in Wenzhou, with many century-old shops.

By Still speaking |

Wuma Street is Wenzhou's most famous commercial street and its most iconic avenue, similar to Shanghai's Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street. Legend has it that Wuma Street, originally known as Wumafang, dates back to the Eastern Jin Dynasty. A statue of five horses still stands on the street, perhaps contributing to its name.

It starts from Jiefang Street in the east and connects with Gongyuan Road, and ends at Chan Street in the west and intersects with Fuqian Street.

To try some local snacks, that’s all, I still like to stroll around Wuma Pedestrian Street.

Breakfast glutinous rice and salty soy milk, highly recommended

By xvqiuwan |

Today's Wuma Street is different from the past. The goods are of varying quality, and locals rarely shop there. High-end items go to the mall, while the more modest ones go to Women's Street.

By The typhoon is coming |

It's simply a street of local shoe stores in Wenzhou...

Wuma Street is an iconic street in Wenzhou. There used to be a building with five horses, but it was later demolished. So don't look for the five horses if you're going to Wuma Street. There are many snacks and shops in the alleys next to Wuma Street. It's a great place to hang out with friends, couples, or just to eat.

By Edward |

There is a market in the city center. The fish ball soup is quite delicious and the cooking method is very local.

By small fish |

It's a pedestrian street, you can go shopping and eat snacks, it's not bad~

By helei56789 |

It is not very big, but it is very unique. It is a must-visit place in Wenzhou.

By The Flesh Demon King |

It's a Wenzhou landmark, nestled in the heart of downtown. The street itself isn't particularly distinctive, just a commercial strip. It brings back childhood memories, like fish balls, ice cream, and beaten eggs. There's even a famous restaurant selling steamed buns in the alleyways. Shamaohe Women's Street, right next to Wuma Street, has successfully transformed into a snack street in recent years. It's not particularly interesting, simply a bustling spot that serves as a Wenzhou landmark.

There's nothing fun to do now...

By laibaby |

The commercial street is just like this, very ordinary, but it can be regarded as a landmark of Wenzhou

By Qianyi |

The most prosperous street in Wenzhou is Wuma Street, where you can see so many brands, big and small, that you can’t see them all.

By cherry |

A pedestrian street that already existed in the old Wenzhou period~

By steamed stuffed bun |

Wuma Street is the area with the strongest commercial and cultural atmosphere in Wenzhou's old city. The buildings on both sides basically maintain their original Western style. There are three century-old stores, Wuweihe, Jinsanyi, and Laoxiangshan, as well as a department store and Wenzhou Restaurant.

Most of these old shops were founded during the Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China, and many of them have a history of more than a hundred years.

By Heleyn |

Wuma Street, Wenzhou's most famous commercial street and its most iconic avenue, is similar to Shanghai's Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street. Legend has it that it originated in the Eastern Jin Dynasty. In 1999, it was designated a national "100 Cities, 10,000 Stores, No Fakes" demonstration street.

Wuma Street, a historic street less than 500 meters long, runs roughly east-west. Once home to nearly all of Wenzhou's time-honored businesses, many retain their original style, blending Eastern and Western influences for a unique blend. These include the First Department Store, Jin Sanyi, Lao Xiangshan Pharmacy, and Wenzhou Restaurant. Most of these shops were founded during the Qing Dynasty and the Republican era, with many boasting a history of over a century. At the west end stands Lao Xiangshan, while at the east, Chen Hui Fish Balls. Specialty stores and specialty shops cater to a variety of visitor needs. From colorful clothing stores (such as Semir, Tangshi, and Metersbonwe), to sports brands (Nike flagship store, Adidas, Xtep, and Anta), to a wide selection of gold and silver jewelry (Chow Tai Fook, Chow Sang Sang, and Luk Fook Jewelry), the streets are lined with unique window displays. Find your perfect find here.

The most iconic landmark is undoubtedly the five horses, which are closely tied to the origins of Wuma Street. The Five Galloping Horses sculpture, weighing approximately two tons, has stood here for over a decade. Visitors love to take photos with the sculpture.

If you're tired of shopping, don't worry! The surrounding area is full of popular traditional snack shops offering a taste of old Wenzhou. For example, Chen Hui Fish Balls and Ajiu Noodle House are well-known. Adjacent Jiefang Street also boasts melt-in-your-mouth wontons and the golden, crispy flat-head lantern cake. You can sample a wide variety of Wenzhou's mouth-watering snacks in one fell swoop.

Wuma Street is the area with the strongest commercial and cultural atmosphere in Wenzhou's old city. It integrates shopping, commerce, culture, entertainment and leisure. If you come to Wenzhou, you must not miss the opportunity to visit here.

The most famous pedestrian street in Wenzhou, which was once frequented by Wenzhou people, is now visited by tourists from other places.

Don't go to Wuma Street for shopping. To be honest, no one from Wenzhou walks on this street now.

Wuma Commercial Street has a large flow of people.

There are many snacks and dim sum near Shamao River.

Travelers can enjoy delicious food while shopping!

By Alone with the wind |

I left Wenzhou on a train at around 6 o'clock in the evening. I visited Jiangxin Island early in the morning and then visited Zhu Ziqing's former residence and the Nanxi Opera Museum. Seeing that it was still early, I went to the most famous commercial street in Wenzhou, the pedestrian street.

Five Horses Street, formerly known as Wumafang, is one of the ancient streets in the old city of Wenzhou.

Wuma Street, Wenzhou's most famous commercial street and its traditional commercial center, is lined with shops of all kinds. In 1999, it was named a national "100 Cities, 10,000 Stores, No Fakes" demonstration street. From 2000 to 2001, Wuma Street underwent a renovation, preserving its original blend of Chinese and Western architectural styles. It also houses a number of time-honored businesses, including the No. 1 Department Store, Wuweihe Grocery Store, Jinsanyi Silk and Cloth Store, Laoxiangshan Pharmacy, and Wenzhou Restaurant.

I personally have no interest in shopping. I took a quick look at Wuma Street, took a few photos of the street scenery, and then went to catch the train.

In one day, you can take in the night view of Oujiang River, Jiangxin Island, Zhu Ziqing's former residence, Nanxi Opera Museum, Wuma Street, etc., and get a quick impression of Wenzhou.

The memory of my second trip to Wenzhou is much more profound than the time I traveled with my father.

Who knows if it will come again?

The most famous pedestrian street in Wenzhou. But there is really nothing to see. There are some snacks to eat in Shamao River.

By Dan Xiaofeng |

It's quite similar to Beijing Road in Guangzhou... There are many old shops

By L1988 |

One of the best places to shop in Wenzhou, with a Five Horses sculpture on the street, and Tianyijiao, a place for eating, is just down the street...

By Unknown cat |

There is a lot of customer flow, basically just for fun. The things sold are not particularly high-end brands, but they are very suitable for young people.

By Heykristina |

It's just a little bit messy, similar to cities like Guangzhou.

By China-TravelNote users |

It's just an ordinary commercial street, the things you buy are mixed, it's not an ideal shopping street

By No 2 |

A place for shopping and food, this is the only place worth visiting in the city

Wenzhou's "Wangfujing" is very crowded on weekends. There are large shopping malls and small shops, and you can eat, drink and have fun all-in-one.

By Yi_Yuuu |

It is a landmark building in Wenzhou and a memory from my childhood, but now I don’t go there often.

By Unpredictable, flowers bloom |

Dirty and messy. The environment is really not good. It is crowded during holidays.

By Wang Haohao |

This is Wenzhou's bustling commercial pedestrian street, connecting to Fuqian Street in the west and Jiefang North Road in the east. Running parallel to it are the First Bridge and Shamao River, all perfect for shopping for clothes and accessories. The clothes and shoes sold on Wuma Street are mostly local Wenzhou brands. While prices might be higher elsewhere, they're often discounted year-round. There aren't many big-name stores, and nothing is particularly expensive, making it a great shopping destination for young people, especially students. If you're thirsty or tired, the alleys east of Wuma Street are recommended, offering a variety of snacks and cold drinks from established shops.

Wuma Street in Wenzhou is Wenzhou's most famous commercial street, also a pedestrian mall. It's primarily lined with shops and restaurants like KFC, McDonald's, Pizza Hut, and Golden Prince Steakhouse, as well as boutiques. This area is generally bustling with people. Restaurants like the ones mentioned above are often packed during lunchtime, sometimes with long queues. So, be mindful of your time of day to avoid rush hour shopping. People who visit Wuma Street often shop for clothes, as the numerous stores here often offer significant discounts during special times or on holidays.

Wenzhou is one of the birthplaces of manufacturing! As early as fifteen or sixteen years ago, the products there were cheap and durable. Now that the business has become famous, the price and quality have changed.

I went here with my boyfriend on May Day last year💏

I forgot whether it was May Day or National Day

Wuma Street is a shopping paradise with many nice little shops.

I bought a couple's outfit at a freelance shop. The quality is not very good, but it is my first one after all.

Then I bought a set of very expensive shorts and a top that were not very good quality. The shorts are still one-third too big for my waist.

It was recommended by a local on the way back from Jiangxin Island by taxi.

If you haven't eaten at Tianyijiao and shopped at Wuma Street, you haven't really been to Wenzhou.

Tianyijiao has a lot of stuff, but I don't really like it.

It's not expensive to stay in a hotel near Tianyijiao

Go to Wuma Street for a stroll at night

I went to the milk tea shop and bought two bottles of yogurt drinks 👶

Leaving behind a lingering memory

It would be very hot if I didn't go to Wenzhou Paradise

This is our first time going on a short trip

The ticket was always in his wallet.

When I went to Hangzhou to see him on May Day this year

I was quite moved when I saw this ticket.

I'm going to Xiamen with you soon. I'm looking forward to it.

I hope you can accompany me through all the good times.

❤❤❤😘

Look at this place in Wenzhou in the past 100 years. This is the abbreviation of modern Wenzhou, with foreign houses and foreign goods, but now only a few buildings are left.

This is a busy pedestrian street with many shops, so it takes a while to walk through it all. Wuma Street is one of Wenzhou's ancient streets, and the buildings on both sides are a fusion of Chinese and Western styles. Wuma Street also has a wide variety of snacks, and they're quite delicious.

By The summer wind |

If you go to Wuma Street and see someone handing out business cards to receive gifts, be sure to avoid them. They are scammers.

By Fu Xiangbiao of Tiantai Mountain |

Wenzhou's most popular commercial street, comparable to Shanghai's Nanjing Road, boasts not only delicious snacks but also numerous flagship stores of Wenzhou clothing brands, such as Baoxiniao, Xiameng, Zhuangji, Qiaoton, Metersbonwe, Semir, and Gaobang. These stores often offer discounts and promotions, making it a great place for young people to shop and relax. There's also a cinema for those who need a break.

By April |

It's not too crowded on weekdays. There are also many places to eat around. But it's a bit too crowded on holidays.
