Alcatraz Island

Alcatraz, a 22-acre rocky island, was once the federal government's imprisonment for criminals of serious crimes. Among those imprisoned here were Chicago's "Godfather" Capone, the murderous yet gifted "Birdman" Stroud, and the cold-blooded "Machine Gun" Kelly. Prisoners could only gaze upon the vibrant San Francisco from behind bars, enduring another form of brutal mental torture. Today, the island has been meticulously preserved to its original prison ambiance, boasting a bird park, museum, and bookstore. Stores on the island sell memoirs of completed prisoners, who describe their experiences as "unforgettable and painful." Despite its gloomy history, the island is also a wildlife sanctuary, home to numerous bird species and offering a haven for relaxation and reflection.

Surrounded by water and inaccessible, Alcatraz Island is a tiny island that has hosted countless thrilling stories. Numerous Hollywood prison escape films have drawn inspiration from the island, and numerous novels have woven mysterious and terrifying tales about it. A reality TV show even visited the island to uncover the truth behind the three inmates' escape.

This place is secluded, mysterious, and filled with repression and anger. It's more like a high-security prison than an island. Most of the prisoners here are the most terrifying and vicious serial killers, such as Capone, the most notorious mafia godfather in Chicago during the 1920s and 1930s.

Getting tickets to Alcatraz Island can be quite challenging. Tickets often sell out early, and during peak season, tickets can be purchased months in advance. This time, I was lucky enough to snag a ticket for the 12:30 pm Christmas Eve departure, departing at noon. Unfortunately, the weather wasn't kind; it was windy, rainy, and torrential.

Many prisoners were terrified when they heard that they were going to be taken to Devil's Island. Although these prisoners were all very vicious and serious criminals, it was difficult for anyone to accept being imprisoned for life on a dark island.

Alcatraz Island lies just across the sea from downtown San Francisco. On one side lies a dark prison, on the other, a bustling city. Every New Year's Eve, the sounds of people's laughter and the explosion of fireworks carry into the prison. This is a form of mental torture even more severe than the physical.

By fincen |

It was once a place where prisoners were held, but later it became a tourist attraction because someone escaped from here.

Alcatraz Island is a bustling destination every day. If you're planning a visit, be sure to purchase your tickets for the day ahead on the official website. Same-day tickets are difficult to find. The tour takes about two hours, and it was something I'd really wanted to include on my itinerary. However, my parents thought buying a ticket to see the prison was boring, so I had to give up. There's a generation gap, so I'll have to go on my own next time. This time, I just walked along the beach and watched the seagulls from afar.

This is a prison on an island that once held serious criminals such as serial killers. It is now a famous tourist attraction and requires a boat ticket to visit the island in advance.

You can take a look at the buildings on the island. Alcatraz was a prison for serious criminals in the 1920s and 1930s, but now it is a complete tourist attraction.

By Look around |

You can overlook Alcatraz Island from the pier, so there is no need to go to the island.

It's said that the prison was built here to create a sense of loss and a yearning for freedom for the inmates as they gazed across the harbor at night at the bustling San Francisco. Later, it was opened as a tourist attraction. It has been the subject of numerous Hollywood films, including X-Men, Bad Kids, and The Game. There's also the sci-fi thriller TV series "Alcatraz," set against the backdrop of the closure of Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary. It also appears in a World of Warcraft instance and in "Call of Duty: Black Ops II."

It would be best to take a boat to Alcatraz at night to experience it.

The prison, which was once isolated from the world, was eventually turned into a tourist attraction due to the high cost. Visitors can take a boat to the island to visit.

Located in San Francisco Bay, California, less than two miles from Fisherman's Wharf, Alcatraz Island, nicknamed "Pelican Island," is named after the numerous pelicans that have inhabited the island since ancient times. It's actually a massive 22-acre reef, hence its local nickname, "The Rock."

The island, covering an area of 0.0763 square kilometers, is surrounded by steep cliffs and deep water, making it difficult to access the outside world. Therefore, it was chosen by the US government as a prison site. It once housed a federal prison and held many high-ranking criminals. The name "Alcatraz" comes from a former prisoner, Philip Grosser, who was convicted of refusing military service during World War I. He compiled his experiences behind bars into a book titled "Uncle Sam's Devil's Island," which exposed the horrors and darkness of the prison to the public and earned the island its recognizable name.

The prison on Alcatraz Island was abolished in 1963. It now stands alongside the Golden Gate Bridge as a famous tourist attraction in San Francisco Bay and has been the subject of numerous films. The most famous of these is "The Rock," directed by Michael Bay in 1996 and starring Nicolas Cage, Sean Connery, Ed Harris, and many other stars. Filming took place primarily on Alcatraz Island. The film is widely regarded as one of the pinnacle action films of the 1990s, significantly boosting Alcatraz's global profile. The film's English title is a reference to the island's common English name, "The Rock."

It is still a very famous island, especially after the movie it became popular. There are ferries that can take you to the island and back, so it is still a tourist attraction worth visiting.

For me, this is the most worthwhile place to visit in the Bay Area. If you have the opportunity to come to San Francisco, don't miss it.

It is now under the management of Kinmen National Park.

The whole scenic area feels very mature and runs in an orderly manner. Waves of guests come to the island without feeling crowded. The tour guide is very professional. There is a Chinese version, so I suggest you choose the Chinese-English translation, which is very good.

Follow the guide and it will tell you how to move forward, including some special routes. You will have an immersive feeling and the experience is great.

The entire tour takes about an hour, but most people will stay in there for 2 to 3 hours to savor the prison.

This was once the inspiration for The Shawshank Redemption because the prison break here is very famous.

X-Men 3 was also filmed here.

The whole island has beautiful scenery. From the island, you can overlook Golden Gate Park and the Golden Gate Bridge, and the bustling scene of San Francisco is in sight.

If you have limited mobility, there are sightseeing buses that can take you to the starting point of the tour, but you will need to walk to the actual tour area by yourself, but it is also accessible with a wheelchair.

Reservations are made here, and you can make reservations in advance on major websites including the official website. If it is the peak season, popular tickets will be sold out very quickly, so it is recommended to make reservations in advance. In the off-season, you can also buy tickets on site. If you make a reservation, a PDF will be sent to your email, which you can print out directly to get the ticket. If you don’t have a printer or don’t have time to print, you can take your passport and bank card directly to the ticket office to print it for free.

Don’t forget to take the free audio guide, there’s a Chinese version…

Friendly reminder: It's incredibly cold on Alcatraz Island in late September! Very cold! Everyone should dress warmly, and preferably with a scarf.

My sister booked the tickets for Devil's Island online in advance. If you want to go, remember to buy tickets at least 12 days in advance. The daytime fee is $30.

Pier 33's daytime ferry departs approximately every 30 minutes for Alcatraz between 8:45 AM and 3:20 PM, and departs approximately every 30 minutes for Pier 33 between 9:55 AM and 6:30 PM. Headphones can be added to your ferry ticket and presented upon arrival. The headphones include a recorded guide to the island's attractions.

There's a map of Devil's Island and the return schedule at the entrance. Take a picture of it beforehand and check it on your return trip. Also, be aware that the only flush toilets and drinking fountains are located near the dock. Once you enter the former prison complex, not only are there no water to drink, but you'll also have to experience the treatment prisoners received back then, including smelly portable toilets. Unfortunately, the wait for the portable toilets can be quite long, so be prepared.

The movie "Alcatraz" 10 years ago left a deep impression on me. It felt like revisiting an old place. There was an English-speaking guide, but you could also tour on your own. You could get a Chinese audio guide for free. The cell block was the most attractive. The guide also detailed the stories of famous prisoners. There were three people who successfully escaped from Alcatraz in history, which is also impressive. Being so close to the city, it must have been very difficult for the prisoners, and it must have been a bit unsafe for the residents.

By Niu'er's father |

Because there were many pelicans on the island in the past, the island is famous for many movies about prison escapes/prisons, the most famous of which should be the old movie "The Rock" starring Nicolas Cage.

Ticket price: US$35.5 (including round-trip ferry tickets and all other fees)

Check Alcatraz's official website for opening hours before deciding on your itinerary. Alcatraz isn't open daily, especially during the off-season, when it might only be open one day a week or even not at all. Originally a great place to observe seabirds, especially pelicans, it was converted to a military base during the Civil War. After the war, the base's mission ended, and the military prison was converted to a civilian facility (federal prison) specifically for serious criminals. A former inmate wrote a book, "Uncle Sam's Alcatraz," describing his time in prison, which made Alcatraz famous. The cold, turbulent waves and ferocious sharks surrounding the island make escape nearly impossible. However, from the prison bars, one can gaze upon the beautiful and vibrant city of San Francisco, and at night, from within their cages, one can hear the sounds of pleasure from yachts. The once-prominent convicts, reflecting on their past and present, clearly suffer mental torment.

We arrived at the designated pier at noon and took a boat to Alcatraz. After entering the prison (this seems a bit off), the staff asked everyone their native language and gave them a guide, one in Chinese. It was easy to follow the guide, not much else to say. My original plan was to tour the entire island and watch the sunset before leaving, but unfortunately, the weather wasn't cooperating. Although it didn't rain, the sun never came out.

By Xie Lidong Leo |

After landing on the island, a tour guide will explain some precautions to tourists with a loudspeaker, followed by a self-guided tour of the entire island. Inside the prison, there are electronic tour guide headphones in different languages. Tourists visit different places according to the voice prompts in the headphones, and listen to the stories of different prisoners as if they were there.

Alcatraz, formerly a federal prison, later became famous as the filming location for the movie "The Rock." As we circled the island, we could clearly see the prison where the prisoners were held, the basketball court used for exercise, and the sentry post where the soldiers kept watch.

This island is actually not far from the main urban area. The prisoners can see the bright lights and nightlife on the other side of the sea, hear the laughter and joy during festivals, and yearn for the free world outside the island, but they are trapped on this small island, isolated from the world.

Seeing so many 100% positive reviews, I went there with high expectations. Personally, I found it quite average. If you're not interested in the historical background, I recommend skipping it. You can find a boat to Alcatraz at Pier 39! Unfortunately, tickets have to be booked far in advance. We underestimated the charm of Alcatraz and could only take the CityPass to see the Golden Gate Bridge while glimpsing Alcatraz, which was full of tourists.

This is the legendary island that was used to imprison serious criminals in history. Legend has it that there are reefs around the island and many sharks, so it is almost impossible for the prisoners to escape. However, they can see the bustling San Francisco across the island through the small windows of the prison every day, which makes the prisoners feel even more miserable.

Of course, the prison on this small island has stopped being used now, and it has become a tourist attraction for tourists. There are special cruise ships that can go from San Francisco to the island, and going to the island is nothing more than visiting the prison.

By Little Strong Cat |

This attraction is so fun! It was truly eye-opening! It's the inspiration for many Hollywood prison escape films and is definitely worth a visit. I bought tickets on-site, which isn't too hard to find in the winter. The afternoon before, I wandered from Pier 39 to Pier 33 to ask. The ticket agent showed us the schedule, and we could choose from about six or seven time slots for the next day. Adult tickets cost $37.25, and credit cards were accepted. There were very few Chinese tourists on the island. My husband and I were probably the only two Chinese people there that day. The rest were mostly Europeans and tourists from other states. This island truly feels like a tangible part of American culture!

This island, the filming location for the famous Nicolas Cage film "The Rock," was once a prison for serious criminals. It's said that most of the prisoners there never returned. It wasn't until a convict who survived wrote a biography based on his own life there, revealing the crimes committed there, that the island became famous. Visitors who want to visit Alcatraz need to make reservations online in advance, though China-TravelNote can do that. I believe it costs $30 per person.

Alcatraz Island. Many companies recommend a day trip to Alcatraz, but due to my tight schedule, I didn't have time. Otherwise, I definitely would have visited the federal prison! I've never been to prison before! Alcatraz Island was once a federal prison. Surrounded by cold water, turbulent currents, and ferocious aquatic life, the federal government often used it to detain serious criminals. Alcatraz means "pelican" in Spanish, as the island has been home to numerous pelicans throughout history. By the way, it's more of a reef than an island; it's clearly a 22-acre reef!

The name #Devil's Island# comes from a former prisoner who published a book called #Uncle Sam's Devil's Island#. Everyone knows Uncle Sam means America. The book describes the horror, gloom, and darkness of the island prison at the time. From then on, Pelican Island was officially labeled as Devil's Island.

From up close, it's truly captivating! Dilapidated, isolated, deserted, sea, dark night... What horror movies do these keywords remind you of? Chainsaw Massacre or The Human Centipede? Mermaid in the Sewer or The Human Skin Hostel?

By Zhang Rui |

I bought a cup and a key and could spend 2 hours wandering around the former prison.

On the way to the island by boat, you can see the Golden Gate Bridge and the San Francisco-Oakland Bridge in the distance.

Compared to other prisons, Alcatraz's most distinctive feature is its view of downtown San Francisco. The prisoners watched the vibrant world on the other side of the river, feeling helpless and hopeless.

Having said that, the scenic area as a whole has no highlights. If you don’t plan to stay in San Francisco for a long time, don’t go.

By Follow the wind |

From Fisherman's Wharf, you can see Alcatraz Island. If the weather is good, the view should be even more beautiful.

Alcatraz used to be a prison. How does one say that?

"Break the rules and you go to prison, break the prison rules and you go to Alcatraz."

"If you commit a crime, you go to jail. If you don't behave in jail, you go to Alcatraz."

So the prisoners here are the bad guys among the prisoners. Follow the instructions and go to the place where the prisoners take a bath and queue up to get the guide.

The wind on the island was quite strong. There was a Chinese tour guide, and we followed the voice prompts to explore the interior of the prison. This kind of experience should be rare, but I found it a bit boring.

San Francisco is beautiful when viewed from the island.

We leisurely made our way to the Alcatraz ticket office at Fisherman's Wharf, where they told us that all day and night tickets were sold out. Just as the ticket agent was telling us there were only two tickets left for the earliest boat the next day, they swiped their swipe and sold them out... The ticket office's purchasing system is the same as online, so people can buy tickets in advance without having to go to the office. She then told us there was another option: to line up early the next morning, and they'd give some tickets away to Eraly Bird. We took this approach and successfully boarded the boat to Alcatraz the next day.

I woke up at 6:30 and was already in line at the Alcatraz ticket office at 7:00! They started selling tickets at 8:00, I can't remember exactly. Anyway, by the time I got there, there were already a lot of people in front of me. But not everyone was there to buy tickets; some had purchased online and were picking them up on site.

Here, the window symbolizes the outside world, and being in a cell with a window is already a top-level treatment.

On Alcatraz Island, there are different "Easter Eggs" at different times of the day. We encountered a prison warden yelling at the prisoners to wake up... He slammed his baton against the iron bars, roaring in a deep voice, and the unsuspecting tourists were frightened to death... Would you be too immersed in the drama...

We went directly to Lombardy Street when we returned to Fisherman’s Wharf from Alcatraz Island. If you don’t drive, you can take the bus to go up and down the hills, which is very interesting.

Alcatraz Island

What is more worth mentioning than its appearance is its history

Although it is a small island in San Francisco Bay

However, the island is surrounded by cliffs on all sides.

Surrounded by icy water and sharks

Selected by the government as the site of a federal prison

Here

Many well-known American serious criminals have been imprisoned

It seems that Mr. Qian Xuesen was also imprisoned here.

Knowing its existence is not because of its history

It's because Alcatraz Island is the filming location of the movie "The Rock"

Take a short break at Pier 33 and queue up to board the ship to Alcatraz at the designated time of 3:50 PM with your online ticket printout.

Alcatraz Island is a small island in the San Francisco Bay area. It's actually a massive 22-acre reef, hence its local nickname, "The Rock." Surrounded by deep water and steep cliffs, Alcatraz was chosen by the US government as a prison site. It once served as the Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary, housing many prominent criminals.

I insisted on visiting Alcatraz Island because of the classic action film "The Rock," starring Nicolas Cage and other veterans. I've watched it over 10 times and remember every scene vividly. This trip to the island was all about experiencing those iconic moments firsthand.

The 15-minute boat ride from Pier 33 to Alcatraz gave me the opportunity to admire the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, which is even longer than the Golden Gate Bridge.

After arriving on the island, an old man used a loudspeaker to welcome everyone and introduce Alcatraz. However, with our low English proficiency, we didn’t understand much.

Outside the tourist information center, there are guide maps in various languages, each costing US$1. You can use them by inserting coins. We started our island tour with the Chinese guide map.

When you enter the main prison bathroom high up on the island, there is a free audio guide machine available for use. Just tell the staff which language you need.

The real Alcatraz Island is still far from the one in the movie "The Rock". Maybe many scenes in the movie were not set on the island.

At Pier 39, we caught the last boat of the day's Bay Cruise. The one-hour journey would pass by Alcatraz Island, and since we calculated the time was perfect for watching the sunset from the boat, we bought our tickets and boarded! It proved to be a wise decision. Watching the water transform from blue to gray to yellow to red, the setting sun slanting down on the water was breathtakingly beautiful from every angle, from the calm waves to the vibrant colors of the forests. Even though the wind blew a bit, it still felt worthwhile.

"Alcatraz" means "pelican" in Spanish, deriving from the island's original habitat, where pelicans gathered in large numbers. The commonly used Chinese translation, "Devil's Island," comes from the book "Uncle Sam's Devil's Island." Located in San Francisco Bay, California, the island covers an area of 0.0763 square kilometers. Surrounded by cliffs and deep water, it is difficult to access the outside world. Originally a lighthouse and a military fortress, the island was later chosen by the US government as a prison site. It once housed the Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary, which held many notable criminals, including Al Capone, George Celino Barnes, and Robert Stroud. While Alcatraz boasts that no inmate has ever successfully escaped, three individuals did. However, due to the difficulty navigating the waters, which are often rife with undercurrents and sharks, it is unknown whether they survived. None of the windows on Alcatraz Prison faced San Francisco. During Thanksgiving and Christmas, the city's joyful laughter bounced off the rocks and filtered through the prison windows, a torment many inmates found unbearable. Many films, such as "The Rock," were filmed or based on this location. The prison was closed in 1963 and now stands alongside the Golden Gate Bridge as a famous tourist attraction in San Francisco Bay.

Across from Fisherman's Wharf is a small island called Alcatriiaz Island. It used to be a prison, but since I didn't have time to visit, I took a few photos of the model to share with you.

Alcatraz Island in San Francisco is a prison in the United States. It is said to be called "Alcatraz Island" because during its time as a prison, a total of 16 people escaped, but only three succeeded. After the escape, these three people were on the island and never encountered a passing ship. They may have frozen to death. (Explained by the tour guide)

In fact, I want to give this six stars. It is really good and worth watching to understand the history.

A small island in San Francisco Bay, covering 0.0763 square kilometers, surrounded by steep cliffs and deep water, it was difficult to access the outside world. Consequently, it was chosen by the US government as a prison site. It once housed Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary, which held many serious federal prisoners. It was abolished in 1963 and is now a famous tourist attraction in San Francisco Bay, along with the Golden Gate Bridge. The prison served as a filming location for the famous Nicolas Cage film "The Rock."

Alcatraz Island is located in San Francisco Bay, California, USA. Standing near the Golden Gate Bridge, you can see Alcatraz in the middle of the ocean. Aboard the Blue and Gold boat, you can get a close-up view of the island, surrounded by steep cliffs and deep water. You'll also see boats that take you ashore to explore the island's interior. It's said to have held many high-ranking criminals. It's now a recreational attraction and a National Landmark.

Just looking at it from a distance, I think it's just a small island, nothing special. Maybe there will be surprises when you get on the island.

I went there just for the Nicolas Cage movie.

Looking out across the Golden Gate Strait, beyond the Golden Gate Bridge lies a small island: Alcatraz Island. Its unique geographical location led the US government to construct a prison, once housing many high-ranking criminals. Although the prison was closed in 1963, its legendary story has long fascinated many. Later, with the release of the film "The Rock," Alcatraz became even more famous. However, since we're not Nicolas Cage or Sean Connery, nor do we possess the skills of James Bond, we won't venture into the murky waters of Alcatraz.

Three kilometers from Fisherman's Wharf lies a small island that once served as a federal prison. From 1934 to 1963, it housed human traffickers, bank robbers, and escapees. Many famous criminals, including Al Capone, George Celino Barnes, and Robert Stroud, were imprisoned there. Although Alcatraz Prison claims no one has ever successfully escaped, three individuals did manage to do so. Because they had to navigate the waters, which were rife with undercurrents and sharks, it's unknown whether they survived. None of the windows on Alcatraz Prison face San Francisco. During Thanksgiving and Christmas, the sounds of cheering from the city bounce off the rocks and penetrate the prison windows, a torment that many inmates find unbearable. Numerous films, such as "The Rock," have been filmed or based on this location.

Tips: 1. Book your ticket at least two weeks in advance. When you enter the prison, you will receive an audio guide device with Chinese service.

2. After printing the order, go to the Pre-paid window at Pier 33 to pick up the ticket. Pick up the ticket 1 hour before departure on the day. If you do not exchange the ticket, the printed order will be scanned by the staff when you board the ship.

3. You must bring a valid photo ID and credit card of the payer

4. Board the boat 30 minutes in advance. If you do not board the boat 10 minutes before departure, your seat will be transferred to someone else.

There is no parking at Pier 33. There is one near Fisherman's Wharf, but it is hard to find and has a 2-hour limit. This is not enough time to visit Alcatraz Island. If you drive there, please allow at least 45 minutes.

6. There is a steep uphill road from the pier to the prison, and it usually takes 2-3 hours on the island.

7. There is no food on the island except water, and picnics are only allowed at the ferry terminal

8. The weather on the island changes quickly and it is often windy

9. Refunds on the official website must be requested 72 hours in advance

Highly recommended!!! I bought tickets to Alcatraz on the official website in advance for $31 per person, and walked around Alcatraz with Chinese headphones and instructions. It was like being there.

If you want to see the beauty of the island, you need to make a reservation one month in advance.

It is the filming location for many films. It is famous but has no obvious characteristics.

Maybe I should take a boat to visit it. From a distance, I could only see it standing there quietly, complemented by the surrounding boats.

Tickets for the boat to Alcatraz Island need to be booked in advance, especially during holidays. Otherwise, you will not have the chance to visit the island.
