Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone

The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, located east of Yellowstone National Park, isn't as spectacular as the Grand Canyon, but it's still a unique sight within the geothermal-themed park. The Grand Canyon boasts two waterfalls: Upper Fall and Lower Fall. The Lower Fall has a greater drop and is the most spectacular. Artist Point is the perfect spot for photographing the Lower Fall.
The 23-mile-long Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is accessible only by one road, so the North and South Rim of the canyon are always crowded with tourists who want to see the Upper and Lower Falls. To make matters worse, the Park Service closed the North Rim Road for reconstruction in 2008. Previously, scenic spots such as Grand View Point, Inspiration Terrace, and Lower Falls that could be seen on the North Rim can only be viewed by walking.

It lives up to its name of Grand View, with a wide view and waterfalls rushing out of the canyon. Combined with the foggy weather, it looks like a fairyland.

The water of the Yellowstone Grand Canyon Falls comes from Yellowstone Lake. Such a calm lake of water passes through the steep canyon to form such a magnificent waterfall.

On the other side of the canyon, layers of trees were covered by fog.

Although they are tall trees, they look like a meadow against the backdrop of the canyon.

Occasionally, I would see a car passing by, but it would be as small as an ant.

The weathered volcanic rocks in the Yellowstone Grand Canyon are also very colorful. Even on such a foggy day, the red, yellow, white and brown colors of the volcanic rocks cannot be concealed.

The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone

The central canyon area of Yellowstone National Park is home to the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, one of the park's most famous attractions. Visitors can admire the magnificent, deep canyon scenery and cascading waterfalls. On clear days, a rainbow can be seen across the canyon. The Yellowstone Canyon is 32 kilometers long, 450-1,200 meters wide, and up to 360 meters deep. The continuous erosion of the river has shaped the rock walls into vibrant colors of yellow, orange, brown, and tan, earning the Native Americans the name "Yellowstone." On the other side of the Yellowstone River are viewpoints: Lookout Point, Grand View, and Inspiration Point. The best vantage point for viewing the Grand Canyon is Lookout Point. Please note that this road is one-way; Canyon Village is located just beyond this point.

The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is a must-see attraction in Yellowstone National Park. However, don't rush straight to Canyon Village, as I did on my first visit. It's just a visitor center and dining area, so you won't see the Grand Canyon or reach any of the viewpoints. The main attractions of the Grand Canyon are the Upper and Lower Falls, as well as the Grand Canyon itself. The best vantage points for viewing the Upper Falls are Upper Falls View, which is almost directly opposite the falls, and Brink of the Upper Falls, which is right at the edge. The best view of the Lower Falls is from Brink of the Lower Falls, which is right next to the Lower Falls and offers the most iconic vantage point for viewing the Grand Canyon. However, the entrance to this viewpoint is on North Rim Dr, a one-way street that leads directly to Canyon Village, where there are many other viewpoints.

From Lookout Point, you can clearly see the Lower Falls. There's another hiking trail in the canyon that leads right to the falls. This is the Lower Lookout Point Trail, which is several levels longer and more difficult than the Brink of the Lower Falls. The guys, all of whom are not very physically fit, shook their heads and couldn't continue.

The first thing we saw was the 92-meter-high Lower Falls. The expansive view from the Artist's Viewpoint gives you the best view of the Grand Canyon's depth and majesty.

By Wenwen |

We entered from the east gate and the first thing we saw was the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone.

As mentioned earlier, Yellowstone National Park originated from a volcanic eruption, with Yellowstone Lake being the largest crater. Over 500,000 years, the Yellowstone River has carved a canyon over 30 kilometers long. The fault lines of the canyon have formed two large waterfalls: the Upper Falls, about 30 meters high, and the Lower Falls, about 90 meters high.

From the east gate, just a few steps up from the parking lot, you can see the full view of the Lower Falls. There's a lookout point here. White explorers first arrived here in 1870. Haines, mentioned at the beginning of this post, was an accompanying painter. His oil painting, which led to the creation of Yellowstone National Park by the U.S. Congress, was painted at this lookout point.

The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is truly magnificent. Today, it's over 30 kilometers long, more than 300 meters deep, and its width varies from 450 to 1,200 meters depending on the area.

By Cape of Good Hope |

The tour guide said that long ago, there were no people here. Two American explorers, Lewis and Clark, came here to explore. They were impressed by the spectacular 93-meter-high canyon waterfall and the beautiful mountains. They marveled that nature could have such a color, all yellow. So they painted the mountains and waterfalls and gave the painting to Congress at the time. Then-President Flatt designated the place as a national park. This was the first national park in the United States and the largest national park in the world at that time.

It's spectacular! Don't miss this attraction, it's different from the Grand Canyon.

By clayman |

The canyon is quite deep and long. Looking down from the top, I was a little scared, because I could fall off the cliff if I wasn't careful.

By A heart free from dust and dirt |

I wanted to go along the Uncle Tom Trail to see the falls up close, but the trail was closed for some reason. So I drove around to the north edge of the canyon, stopped at the viewpoints of the upper and lower falls to take pictures, and even went down to the cliff of the lower falls to feel the overwhelming momentum up close.

Our first stop was the Lower Falls Parking lot at the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. I was thrilled after parking the car. The surrounding scenery was completely different from the previous day. A sea of snow and forest, it was hard to tell if it was Yellowstone. From the parking lot, we followed the trail to Lookout Point. From there, we looked left over to the Grand Canyon. To the right, we saw the Lower Falls of the Yellowstone River. We continued along the mountainside trail. The snow-covered trail was quite slippery, especially on the slopes, so we had to be extremely careful. We hiked all the way to Grand View Point, where the scenery was a whole other story.

The shuttle bus in the park is very convenient. If there are elderly people and children in the team, I suggest starting from the orange area.

By /ylContinuous flow |

It's spectacular and steep. But a simple recommendation like that feels disingenuous. The specific spot is: Artist Point. Initially, I wasn't sure which spot offered the best views of the Grand Canyon, so I drove around and walked around, which was quite time-consuming. Ultimately, I decided this one spot was enough.

By Yu Xiaoyang |

Although the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone is not as spectacular as the Grand Canyon of Colorado, it also has its own unique flavor. Because the Grand Canyon of Colorado does not have waterfalls, but Yellowstone does, haha

By Mikan |

The moment the canyon appeared before my eyes was quite shocking. Many trees on the mountain were down, and I didn't know what had happened. In the distance, I could see the Yellowstone Falls, the only outlet of Yellowstone Lake, with a rushing water.

By Watercolor car and Melaleuca |

From the artist's palette, the Upper Falls are breathtakingly beautiful. Although not as wide as the Grand Canyon, the drop is truly spectacular, and the beauty of the falls cannot be captured in photos.

By Autumn Leaves |

Waterfalls of all sizes, nestled among rugged rocks or surrounded by green jungles, surge forward with unstoppable force; the majestic Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is ablaze with colors and is magnificent and gorgeous.

By Cynthia |

If you want to take in the grandeur of the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, there's only one perfect spot: Artist Point on the South Rim. Not only is it less arduous to hike, but you can also see the famous Lower Falls. However, there are pros and cons: it's a must-see for tour groups, and parking is tight. (We went there off-peak.)

Lookout Points on the North Rim is a great place to view the falls from a distance. It is suitable for taking the elderly and children. It is only a few steps away.

If you want to get a closer look at the falls, there are two options.

The Brink of Lower Falls Trail at the North Rim is relatively easy, but it is said to take dozens of minutes to walk.

Uncle Tom's Trail on the South Rim is only two miles long, but the steel staircase in the second half is very steep, with 300 steps to walk up. However, the effect is also very good.

Driving on the North Rim is one-way and requires going in circles, while driving on the South Rim is two-way.

While not as large as Arizona's Grand Canyon, the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is equally spectacular: its walls are a vibrant mix of yellow, orange, brown, and tan, earning the Indians the name "Yellowstone." The emerald green Yellowstone River rushes through the narrow canyon. Add a bit of sunlight and you'd be in for a truly dazzling spectacle.

By Wang Kai Photography |

The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone was voted the number one attraction among the 90 scenic spots in Yellowstone National Park, and many Yellowstone albums feature photos of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone on their covers.

Yellow rocks are stacked layer upon layer, and the Yellowstone River winds through the canyon.

Watching the river water rushing and roaring from the upper reaches, it suddenly flows down the stone wall, stirring up thousands of waves and making a huge roar.

Unfortunately, this time I only visited the North Rim and the Upper Falls of the Yellowstone Grand Canyon. I didn’t get to go to the classic Artist Point and didn’t experience the shock of the 94-meter drop of the Lower Falls. I’ll leave that opportunity for next time.

By COCOOOOOOOOOi |

It is breathtaking, but its style is very different from the Grand Canyon. The rocks of the Grand Canyon are red and tower-shaped, while the rocks of the Yellowstone Grand Canyon are yellow and have a sulfur smell, probably because there is sulfur in the rocks.

There are two ways to go up and down. You can see it a little bit from the entrance. It's very far away and not very good. It takes a long mountain road to go down the canyon, but the scenery is worth it.

If I had time, I really want to stay here for the whole day, it's so beautiful!!!

The time was just right. The weather was not very cold, but the snow had not melted yet. There was thick snow on both sides of the canyon, and there was a huge rainbow. I have never seen a rainbow so close in my life.

By xi-xi |

The Grand Canyon of Yellowstone has two viewing points: Upper Falls and Lower Falls. For those who've seen the grandeur of the falls, Upper Falls might not seem impressive, but seeing Lower Falls up close is a different story. The photo above was taken at Artist Point. The Uncle Tom's Trail, recommended online, was closed for road repairs when we visited.

Speeding along the mountain roads of Yellowstone National Park, the autumn scenery on the ground and the white clouds dancing in the sky complement each other, which is a beautiful sight! The hot springs by the river roll and spray from time to time.

This is one of the most magnificent and beautiful scenes in Yellowstone National Park. Here, the rushing river splashes and forms two magnificent waterfalls, roaring into the valley floor.

The most captivating aspect of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone isn't its depth or shape, nor its cascading waterfalls. It's the bizarre, dazzling array of weathered volcanic rock. The canyon walls shimmer from top to bottom, dazzling in the sunlight.

TIPS: About visiting the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone

The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is divided into the South Rim and the North Rim. After passing through the tranquil Hayden Valley, the Yellowstone River begins to gather energy, cascading through two waterfalls before entering the canyon: Upper Falls, with a drop of 33 meters, and Lower Falls, with a drop of 94 meters. The Grand Canyon was formed by the Yellowstone River eroding volcanic rocks corroded by geothermal heat. Between 14,000 and 18,000 years ago, the Grand Canyon underwent three successive glacial erosions, gradually forming its typical V-shaped (river-eroded) canyon. The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone only took shape in its current form about 10,000 years ago, making it quite young.

Tours of the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone primarily focus on Canyon Village. South Rim Drive offers Uncle Tom's Trail and Artist Point, while North Rim Drive features viewpoints such as Upper Falls View, Lookout Point, Grand View, and Inspiration Point. At sunrise, sunlight gradually illuminates the falls. Later in the afternoon, sunlight fades from the canyon.

Several points in this area are relatively close to each other. While Uncle Tom's Trail takes longer to hike, the distance from parking to the viewpoint is relatively short. The map indicates a 1.5-2 hour hike to the canyon area, but we actually spent about 1.5 hours visiting Artist Point, Grand View, and Lookout.

By Emily |

The Grand Canyon of Yellowstone is a rift valley with two waterfalls: Upper Fall and Lower Fall. The Lower Fall has a greater drop and is more spectacular. Artist Point is the best vantage point for photographing the Lower Fall. There are hiking trails that allow visitors to trek deeper into the valley. Due to our limited time, we only walked the short, approximately 2km section of the trail along the canyon rim, enjoying the pristine forest along the way.

The canyon is breathtaking and colorful, and well worth seeing. But be careful and don't get too close to the cliffs. I accidentally dropped my sunglasses while taking a photo near a cliff, and I left them in Yellowstone as a souvenir. It was a terrible loss.

In fact, it is just a canyon and a waterfall, which is not very special. The focus of Yellowstone Park should still be the geysers and hot springs.

I booked a hotel in the Yellowstone Park six months in advance. It's not far from the Yellowstone Canyon. The canyon view is just average, but the accommodation was a pleasant surprise. I looked up at breakfast time and saw a bear less than 2 meters away from me. I was so excited. It stayed at my window for 5 minutes. Finally, the forest police came and fired 3 flares🔫, and the big bear slowly walked into the forest. Considering that I was going for a walk in the morning, I wondered if it would become a takeout bucket for the big bear.

By Constantine |

This is one of the few scenery worth seeing in Yellowstone National Park. The concept pursued by the US National Park is nature, so many places look a mess, especially Yellowstone National Park. They don't put out fires, letting them die on their own. When trees burn, they just let them rot in the ground as nutrients, and they don't clean up. So many places look very desolate. This is a natural scenery worth praising in the park. The rising mist is also very likely to cause rainbows, but it is not obvious in this photo.

By Caterpillar & Acne Dragon |

While not as majestic as Colorado, the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone surpasses it in its bizarre, vibrant colors. Standing on the Lookout point, the canyon walls appear as if painted with oil paint, a crisscross of white, yellow, green, and crimson. Unfaded by the rapids or faded by the wind and sun, they shimmer brilliantly in the sunlight.

By Libra |

I was deeply impressed. The two sides of the valley seemed to be cut by a knife. There was also this natural yellow-brown color. Until now, I can't believe it is real. It looks like a painting. In fact, I have seen many canyons, but to be honest, this is the first time I have seen such a canyon. The color structure is too conspicuous.

By Wandering Shrimp |

The canyon is winding and deep, and the waterfall is rushing and surging. It’s a pity that due to heavy snow, the viewing trails are closed, so we can’t walk down to the bottom of the valley to see the spectacular sight of the waterfall plunging three thousand feet.

Yellowstone River Grand Canyon

The river flowing from Yellowstone Lake flows through a roughly 38-kilometer stretch, creating a precipitous canyon commonly known as the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. The Yellowstone River, a mere 97 kilometers long, is known as "the only river in the United States without a dam." Here, the river suddenly surges, creating a powerful spray that creates two magnificent waterfalls that roar into the Grand Canyon.

The Yellowstone River's long and powerful erosion through volcanic rock has shaped the magnificent Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. The Grand Canyon reaches a depth of 60 meters, a width of 200 meters, and a length of approximately 32 kilometers. For visitors to this famous stretch of the river, the most captivating attraction is not the canyon's depth and shape, nor the cascading waterfalls, but the bizarre and dazzling array of weathered volcanic rock. The canyon walls gleam from head to toe, dazzling in the sunlight. White, yellow, green, blue, vermilion, and countless other shades of red shimmer in the water. Millions of tons of rock appear to be painted, as if unscathed by the elements. The colors are vibrant, durable, and impervious to erosion or fading.

By Gaigaichen |

The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is one of the most magnificent and stunning sights in Yellowstone National Park. The 97-kilometer-long Yellowstone River is said to be "the only undammed river in the United States." Here, the river suddenly surges, creating a cascading spray that forms two magnificent waterfalls, roaring down into the Grand Canyon and into the Pacific Ocean. The canyon is very deep, and most people stand on top to gaze down, a narrow valley with swift currents. Honestly, I wasn't impressed; after seeing so many mountains and canyons, they all seem the same.

The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, nestled in the heart of Yellowstone National Park, is one of the park's most famous attractions, offering stunning views of the canyon's depths and cascading waterfalls. The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, located in the central part of Yellowstone National Park near the center of the Figure 8 tourist route, is the park's most spectacular canyon. It's also the only grand canyon open to the public. Facilities are comprehensive, including a visitor center, a gas station, and a large parking lot. There are several parking lots along the way, each offering a different perspective and a unique experience. The entire canyon is truly spectacular. I downloaded a picture from Wikipedia for comparison. Others' photos are truly stunning. This canyon landscape is unlike any other in Yellowstone and is a must-see.

While Yellowstone is known for its geysers, this canyon is truly worth a visit. While far less majestic than the Grand Canyon, it offers a refreshing escape. A small canyon nestled amidst the dense Yellowstone forest, the Yellowstone River flows through it. From the observation deck, you can overlook the entire canyon, perfect for photos and hiking. For further information, the Yellowstone River flows north through this canyon, joining the Madison River west of Yellowstone Park in Montana. From there, it flows into the Missouri River, joining the Mississippi River in Missouri and finally reaching the sea in New Orleans. If measured by length, the Yellowstone River is also a major source of the Mississippi River, and its distance from the official source (west of Yellowstone) is actually quite close (I measured it myself, ugh).

The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is located on the east side of Yellowstone Park. It has two waterfalls, the Upper Fall and the Lower Fall. The Lower Fall has a larger drop and is more spectacular.

Before reaching Overlook Point, there is a road that goes down in an S-shaped curve. Halfway down, you can see the Upper Fall from a distance, but it is quite far away. If you continue walking down, you can reach the top of the Lower Fall. The feeling of watching the waterfall up close is very spectacular.

When we started walking towards Overlook Point, it suddenly started to rain. We thought it would be sunny all day and didn’t bring an umbrella, but because we really wanted to see the panoramic view of the falls, we still walked to the observation deck in the rain.

While admiring the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone and Lower Falls in the rain, we were about to get soaked when we decided to run to the parking lot. Mr. L said he wanted to wait a moment to take a few more photos. Unexpectedly, because of this "wait a moment", we had a pleasant surprise. It was as if God had cast a spell in the sky. In an instant, the heavy rain stopped, and the sun shone through the dark clouds from the direction of the waterfall, forming a beautiful rainbow above the canyon. Everyone looked in the same direction and cheered. At this moment, I felt more than just beauty.

Due to long-term weathering and the nourishment of hot springs, various metallic substances in the ancient rhyolite in Yellowstone Canyon have oxidized, creating a vibrant yellowish coloration that gives Yellowstone National Park its name. Artist's Point and Inspiration Point to the north offer the best views of the canyon's grandeur. It's said there are trails leading down to the canyon floor.

At the right end of the figure-8 curve, you'll find the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone and its Upper and Lower Falls. The canyon's cross-section is dominated by orange and yellow, with dense fir trees dotting the mountaintops. The green waters of the waterfalls, the gushing white foam, and the azure sky create a landscape painting with no skimpy use of color. The Lower Falls is the highest waterfall in Yellowstone National Park, with a drop twice that of Niagara Falls. If you have the time, whether you walk to the falls or descend the mountain path to them, you'll experience a completely different experience than simply viewing them from afar.

We walked and stopped a lot, and spent about 2-3 hours in the Grand Canyon. It is recommended to go in the morning, as taking photos of the canyon in the afternoon may cause backlighting.

The Grand Canyon is divided into two sections, north and south. The southern section is dominated by Artist Point and Uncle Tom's Trail. The trail begins at Artist Point and is quite challenging and long; we walked for about 20 minutes before returning. Artist Point, like Old Faithful, is a must-see for tour groups, and photo opportunities require queuing. The northern section of the Grand Canyon is a one-way street, Scenic Drive, with several viewpoints where you can stop for photos: Lookout Point, Grand View, and Inspiration Point, all of which have small trails.

Yellowstone National Park is the first national park in the United States. Its name comes from the yellow rocks here. The scenery is really ordinary. Perhaps the significance of Yellowstone is more profound. More than a hundred years ago, Americans had the awareness of protecting the environment and establishing national parks.

When it comes to Yellowstone, there are no reviews that are not five-star, and everyone is satisfied with it.

Our first stop at the Grand Canyon was Painter's Palette, where the view of Upper Fall was absolutely breathtaking. While not as large or photogenic as the Grand Canyon, the colors are every bit as magnificent. Photos don't capture this magnificence, likely due to the way the colors are captured in the camera.

I had decided not to go after seeing the pictures posted by my seniors, but luckily I didn't miss it. I definitely have to go.

The Grand Canyon of Yellowstone has two routes, the inner and outer routes. You must walk both routes to see different views. The view from close up is different from the view from afar!

It's easy to walk down, but a bit tiring to walk up. It looks pretty good.

One of the most magnificent views in Yellowstone National Park, it is very shocking. There are many viewing platforms along the way for tourists to stop and enjoy the view.

I got up at six in the morning to watch the sunrise at the Grand Canyon. It was a wonderful experience.

It's spectacular, and the scenery is very different from other places in Yellowstone. I think it's a must-see.

Yellowstone National Park is a magical place! Aside from its top-notch hot springs and wildlife, its multicolored pools can't compare to Jiuzhaigou, its calcified pools can't match Huanglong, its plateau scenery can't compare to the Sichuan-Tibet Highway, its grasslands can't compare to western China, Yellowstone Lake pales in comparison to Qinghai Lake, its snow-capped mountains are a far cry from the Meili Snow Mountain, its waterfalls can't compare to Niagara Falls, its canyons can't compare to Colorado Springs, and even its supervolcano itself has no discernible crater... In short, not a single feature in Yellowstone can be ranked top-tier! But, but, have you ever seen so many attractions packed into one park? Have you ever experienced the feeling of shifting your car from one scene to another? Whenever you start to tire of a particular scene, Yellowstone kindly offers a welcome respite: "Boss, change the disc..." The driving never stops, the scenery never stops!

The road in the middle of the figure-8 shape was built specifically to quickly reach the East District. In the summer, you can take this road to the Canyon District. We happened to be staying in Canyon Village, so after checking in, we quickly headed to admire the Grand Canyon. The road to the Grand Canyon is a one-way street. It was approaching dusk, so we headed out to the grasslands to look for animals.

There are several viewpoints on both sides of the waterfall, with the best view from Artist Point, followed by Grand View. You can also hike Uncle Tom's Trail, a series of straight up and down stairs that offer views of the falls from various angles, though you can't get close to the foot of the falls.
