Train From Bangkok Train Station to Ayutthaya

Since every country is different how they mark trains (some easier, some much more confusing), I'm curious about the trains to Ayutthaya.

I assume most trains will have their final destination shown, but what about stops in between?

Looking quickly I'm seeing maybe these trains would stop at Ayutthaya unless they are special express ones, etc. Even then would those trains stop there?

Thinking these trains to these destinations would work, but just want some help in case there are others or if some of these won't work?

Destination from Bangkok:

Lop Buri

Kaeng Khoi Junction

Ban Phachi Junction

Ban Takhli

Taphan Hin

Phitsanulok

Sila At

Thanks, just want to make it easier on myself than getting to the station and trying to figure it out on my own. Also do they have automated kiosks, or would you have to go to the ticket booth and ask the person there for the ticket?

All trains stop at Ayutthaya.

You say Bangkok train station, but which one?

3rd class trains go from Hua Lamphong and stop at Bang Sue. 2nd class trains go from Krung Thep Aphiwat, which is next to Bang Sue.

You have to buy tickets from the ticket office.

Hi, Thai people are friendly and helpful, and that includes station staff. We always ask for directions to the correct platform and the rough spot for our carriage by asking staff rather than trying to figure it out ourselves.

I would go to Krun Thep Aphiwat about 45mins before scheduled departure and buy a ticket. In our experience, they are rarely more than half full. It is a vast station and it can easily take 10mins to walk to the platform

Ayutthaya is wonderful, including its charming old station whose days are numbered I fear.

Enjoy!

All trains on the northern and north eastern lines will stop at Ayutthaya.

I have not been to the new station but buying train tickets in Thailand for foreigners is very easy there are always people who will help

Easy peasey. If you go to the shiny new Krung Thep Aphiwat station (reachable by MRT subway) they will sell you tickets for the next train. You don't need a round trip or advance purchase. Just buy a ticket for the next train heading north.

If it's the third-class train, it actually starts at the old Hua Lamphong terminus and you'll need to take a short walk outside to the old Bang Sue station, which is adjacent to the Krung Thep Aphiwat. The ticket vendor will explain. They are very helpful.

When you get to Ayutthaya, eager tuk-tuk drivers will be waiting to take you on a route that hits all the highlights.

Upon return to the railway station, you can buy a ticket back.

The route used to be slow and painful, with some annoying grade crossings in the city that required the train to stop while the roadway was cleared. The rails have been upgraded and the ride, even in third class without air conditioning, is enjoyable. Just note that the windows open DOWN and not UP.

#4. "Just note that the windows open DOWN and not UP."

I find that a strange comment. Don't most train windows open downwards?

#5 perhaps not in Savannah

Great info and yes I'll be staying in China Town so it would be the Hua Lamphong station I'm looking at departing and arriving from (Google just shows it as "Bangkok Train Station", but now I realize that it's officially called "Hua Lamphong"). I assume trains from there are also the same as from the Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Station? Yes I normally go to stations in cities I don't know the day before usually to get the layout, but seems I might not have to do that.

Glad things will be easily marked and the ticket people will be helpful (I have had many that try to explain things, but it ends up more confusing).

As for Ayutthaya, I'm a walker and found you can actually walk across the bridge there (I found the staircases on Google Street View), so since I'm a big time walker and love exploring, I won't need the Tuk Tuks at all, and I also like to experiene everything in between the places I want to see.

As for train windows, at least they open. In Romania they refuse to open them and if they are, everyone closes them, even if it is hot as hell outside and stuffy inside. Just a weird cultural thing (that I once knew the reason of, but have forgotten)...

"as "Bangkok Train Station", but now I realize that it's officially called "Hua Lamphong"). I assume trains from there are also the same as from the Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Station?"

Hua Lamphong, used to be the Bangkok station, however they built a new one at Krup Thep Aphiwat, which is where most of the trains now go from. Only the slow third class go from Hua Lamphong.

So, no, you assumed wrong, different trains from Hua Lamphong and from Krup Thep Aphiwat.

As I said before, trains from Hua Lamphong, stop at Bang Sue which is next to Krup Thep Aphiwat station.

Ayutthaya, you should take the ferry across the river, just walk straight on down from the station, it is quite a small lane, that will bring you to the river after about 3 mins walk. There you will see the ferry, 10 baht.

Third class, windows open, they also have a metal shutter, that keeps the sun out but lets some air through, you will need to use that if on the sunny side. Watch your fingers, when dropping it down.

Oh thanks for explaining the train stations then. I'll just take the Blue line then to Krung Thep Aphiwat Central instead and go from there.

I didn't realize the ferry at all to cross. I'll do that then. Is there any other types of water ferry's in town such as crossing near Wat Chaiwatthanaram? The bridge isn't that far oway, but just curious if there are regular water taxis as well there?
