Taxis are easy enough to find on the street; they wait for trade in many Thamel streets, will ask if you want a ride as they drive past and there are many outside places like Boudhanath. As barcaranger said, negotiate and agree on the price first. They are not expensive for most travellers even at the first-offer price but negotiation will reduce this, although not to the price a local would pay or, probably, the pathao rate. If you do prefer the same taxi and driver for the day, arranging this directly with a driver (perhaps the day before) is possible and cheaper than using an agent.

Pathao is cheaper than hailing from the street because the ‘foreigner premium’ isn’t added. Pathao was easy to use in tourist areas e.g. Thamel because the drivers speak English because they may phone to check the pick up location, but I had difficulty in a non-touristy place (Banepa) so my guide took over, after recovering from laughing at my attempts to speak Nepali. When there, pathao could be used to check the cost of a route and inform negotiations. That said, I would not worry about the cost too much, but if the budget is limited then buses are an option. Walking is possible to: I don't see the need for a taxi between Thamel, even north T, and DS (c30 minutes walk) and T to Swayambunath (an hour, say). Google maps and maps.me work well enough (mostly).

With two days at a leisurely pace, there would probably be time to see more than Thamel, KTM DS, Boudhanath and Pashupatinath.

Pashupatinath is an interesting place to see, not just for the cremations (can be a fascinatingly different cultural practice to observe at a respectful distance and not necessarily ghoulish) but the disappointment can be not seeing inside the main temple because it’s closed to non-Hindus. Aarati, the evening, is quite a spectacle. P is a relatively short walk from Boudhanath - 30 minutes or so to the Guhyeshwari temple entrance. If P is not for you there is another Shiva temple complex at Gokarneswor (it has cremation ghats but they are not often used), which is a quick taxi ride or about an hour or so walk from Boudhanath. Kopan monastery is also walkable from B.

Combining DS with Swayambunath is probably a little more efficient for travel time and distance than DS and Boudhanath (and B is worth more time in my opinion).

On a complete tangent. Someone might have been John C suggested walking everywhere and I did that a few weeks ago so Thamel …Boudha one day Thamel Pushnapatinath , Thamel …..Pathan etc and with the exception of Pushnapatinath they were all easy walks and I saw so many things and talked to so many people I’d never have done by taxi. Obviously look out for the great big holes you get but if you are fit it’s well worth considering. Whoever suggested it and I’m pretty sure it was John thanks for the suggestion. If you have some time it’s a great suggestion despite the air quality

You can either hire a taxi for full day, or can get the taxi just whenever you needed it. The transaction between any of two heritage site would costs you maximum of $5 - $7, so the entire day taxi costs ends up around 25 - 30 USD, and entrance fees are to be paid. If you have two days then just hire the taxi when you want and take enough time where you enjoy the most. And yes, don't miss out the Pashupatinath its amazing place to be there and learn about life and deaths. Have a safe travel !

Thanks all!
