Self-catering apartment/villa in or near Amed

We would appreciate suggestions on accommodation where we can cater for ourselves. It does not need to be elaborate, just a basic kitchen and fridge.

Also the location of supermarkets or smaller shops for seafood, bread, vegetables and fruit.

I should have said one bedroom.

Hi,

budget/time of year/facilities.

Pool etc.

Why have you chosen Amed exactly (interests/location etc).

I dive and Mrs P likes to snorkel. We are in Amed every year. Easy access snorkeling/diving is important to us.

The main area of Amed with most shops etc is Jemeluk (where we stay every year).

There are self-catering places but much depends on your budget. If you want self-catering you will have to accept thatyour options may be limited with “1 bedroom”.

Don't know much in the way of smaller properties with kitchens.

This place ( in no way a personal recommendation) is small place with outdoor kitchen/dining. 2 bedrooms either side of the kitchen area.

It is next to the Chill Bar on the beach.

This larger place is down near the Rimba cafe but set back from the beach.

I would try Airbnb and just set your own criteria budgetwise and see what you can get for your budget then maybe come back with properties you are interested in.

Unless you have very specific dietary requirements it seems crazy to want to self cater in Amed. For the following reasons

A. So many restaurants and warungs with menus as long as your arm catering to all tastes.

B. Difficulty sourcing ingredients unless you have transport.

C. Many accommodation options have in-room fridges, so you can have drinks or snacks.

Sorry, I haven’t really answered your question as I haven’t stayed anywhere with catering facilities.

Enjoy your holiday!

Thank you for your reply.

Budget - none really, we are willing to pay more for what we want.

Time of year - target is July 2025.

Facilities - a washing machine is preferred.

Pool - not required

Reason - freedive and snorkel.

Willing to pay for more than one bedroom - we do this often in order to get self-catering.

Will check those places and keep researching and have a look at Jemeluk as you have suggested elsewhere that it is a good freedive and snorkel bay.

As you are there often do you know where a car could be hired? Not at Denpasar, just locally to be handed back before leaving for the airport.

Thanks jan.

We know there are many warungs but it does not always suit us. At times we go out but like the flexibility. We much prefer apartment style accommodation to hotels and this is an extension of that.

Shopping is often the difficulty as you suggest, and as we have not been in that area we are asking for guidance. Maybe it is not a good option.

Hi,

Freediving is popular in Jemeluk.

https://apneista.com/ is near the main Pantai Jemeluk. They used to do yoga in the Freedive centre itself but this is now part of the http://www.blueearthvillage.com on the hill above Pantai Jemeluk.

I was diving with a french girl in 2022 whose boyfriend was doing his Freedive Instructors course at Apneista.

Nov 2024 was diving with an Australian girl who was also a free diver whose husband, a very keen freediver, was freeddiving in Jemeluk bay.

It is also possible to get “freediving” trips to Tulamben to freedive on the USAT Liberty.

I agree with post 6, there are also a lot of freedivers around Tulamben and the Apnea school there as well. Our friend trained with the Tulamben shop, and won three gold medals at the CMAS World championships in Greece in November. On top, each was a new world record!

I doubt that you'd be able to hire a "legal" car around Amed/Tulamben. Although you could probably get a private rental, do be aware that your travel insurance would not cover if not hired from a proper car rental agency.

As for food supplies. Most locals shop at the morning markets, these often start around 3-4 am, so do be prepared to go very early.

We spend 58 nights at a time in Bali (mainly Tulamben) and are elderly. Sometimes we don't want to go to the hotel (or other) restaurants for dinner, so we have in place a few places that will deliver. For lunch we self cater with cheese, bikkies, cold meats (meat & bikkies brought from Australia) and fruit that we are generally given, or ask staff to buy for us when they go to the markets. Our hotel room does not have a kitchen.

Thanks cb.

The freediving part will be sorted out easily. Like you we have a light lunch and this is one reason for the apartment style accommodation. I think it may be hard to find good bread.

We will go to the markets for sure, its part of the reason for being there and not in a hotel with other foreigners.

it just finding the self-catering part but we will get there.

Seahorse, you might find decent bread at Rimba Cafe, but not 100% sure if they make it to sell, I've only had their cakes.

There is a french bakery at the “Culik” end Jemeluk near the Hotel Uyah. Mostly cakes but they do baguettes.
