Hello
Seems we may be in port for one day on Showa (please excuse spelling) Day - public holiday. Will shops and tourist attractions all be closed?
Jules
In Japan, shops and tourist attractions almost never close on national holidays.
The only places definitely closed will be government offices, banks and post offices. You can get cash out at 7-Eleven convenience stores and quite a few others with international ATM service sticker. If the public holiday falls on a Monday, which is often a weekly closing day, most sights will be open on Monday and close on Tuesday instead.

In fact, if you are in Tokyo that day, you might be interested to know that Showa Memorial Park in Tachikawa City and Shinjuku Gyoen are both open free of charge.
