recommendation for last 24h in Japan

Hi Everyone-

Forgive me if this is a duplicate. I thought I posted this a couple of days ago but am not seeing it. My husband and I are traveling to Japan the first two weeks in March, spending a few days in Osaka before starting a multi-day trek on the Kumano Kodo and ending up in Ise. At that point we will have about 24 hours before we need to be need to arrive at NRT for our long flight home. Our question centers around where to spend those last 24 hours: Nagoya (never been there), Tokyo (have been there for several days in the past), Narita (the town), or some other spot between Ise and NRT. For context, we are in our 50's so nightlife is not a priority, enjoy exploring off the beaten path, prefer shopping at local stores far more than chains or "luxury" shops, but would also appreciate a comfortable nights stay given long travel days afterward. Would greatly appreciate any suggestions!

What time do you have to be at NRT on the day you leave? Nagoya is possible if you fly out in the afternoon. You can pamper yourself in a nice hotel such as the Marriott Associa. Highly recommend a room with the Club Lounge access.

Staying in Narita town is a good option if you haven't seen Naritasan Temple. It’s impressive. The Sando, street leading to the temple is fun, too.

Thanks so much for the input. Our flight leaves at 5:30pm, so we will have from early afternoon Friday til early afternoon Saturday free.

If I'm flying from NRT I always stay in Narita city before. It is actually one of my favorite places in Japan.

Either Tokyo or Narita would be good choices. If you can't think of anything specific you'd want to do in Tokyo, just stay overnight in Narita and visit Naritasan Temple.

Many thanks for the responses. Seems that Narita city is the best option. We have not researched much yet, but we would welcome any suggestions for local restaurants, shops, etc. in addition to the Temple.

There are restaurants along the avenue to Shinshoji Temple. There is a ramen restaurant that the crew staff frequent but I haven't tried it yet. Grilled eels with rice is one of the local speciality there.

There are many restaurants around the train stations and along the street to the temple as Global mentioned. Also, the Aeon mall food court has many choices along with standalone places. The park above the temple is a great place for a stroll.

Thanks to you all for taking the time to share your ideas. We have booked our stay in Narita city and look forward to the visit!

If you like unagi, try Kawatoyo as you stroll along the main strip. We could not wake up early enough to claim unagi restaurant ticket in Nagoya and this was an excellent alternative. We sat upstairs by the window and it was yummy and relaxing. We ordered the normal size, but looking back I would get the double order.

This sounds wonderful! We definitely hope to try unagi (we never have) and this looks to be a perfect spot. Thank you!
