NRT to Hakone

Planning an upcoming trip arriving in NRT at 7:30. Confused on the best option to get to Hakone Ten Yu.

Is there an ideal path to get to Hakone? Do I buy tickets before hand? Traveling with teens. Is it best to leave our luggage to be delivered to our Tokyo hotel so that we pick up the next day when we return the next day?

7:30 am or 7:30 pm?

Access to your accommodation in Hakone = https://www.ten-yu.com/en/access.html

Send most of your luggage from the airport to your hotel in Tokyo. You can specify the delivery date.

Take the Narita Express to Shinagawa and switch to the Shinkansen to Odawara, then Hakone Rail to Gora and take a taxi or Tonyu’s shuttle. Don't transfer from Narita Express to Shinkansen at Tokyo Station. It's a long transfer. It is much easier at Shinagawa.

Note that with ideal connections, you are looking at four trains and a travel time of at least three hours.

Dave's question is very relevant. If you are leaving the airport at 7:30 p.m. the trip is around 3 1/2 hours.

However, if your plane is landing at 7:30 p.m., you probably will not be getting your first train until 8:30 p.m. and you can get as far as Hakone-Yumoto by 11:13 p.m., and then taxi. The last train from Hakone-Yumoto to Gora departs 10:43 p.m.

7:30am

Thx for the tips, are tickets pre purchased individually or do they need to be purchased in advance. And with 4 would it be cheaper to get a private car after all the transfers and luggage delivery?

Make an overnight pack and send the rest to your Tokyo hotel.

The steerwheel and the side on the road will be different. You can sleep on trains but the driver cannot. Deifintely please take trains for your own safety.

Not sure if "private car" meant a rental car or a car with a driver? Either option won't be cheap though. If you want to rent your own car, expressway fees and possibly the one-way drop-off fee will be significant.

A taxi will cost more than 60,000 yen from NRT to Hakone, so a private transport will cost more. My guess is above $500 USD.

You’ll purchase Shinkansen tickets at the airport train station. Staff will be there for assistance.

Thx for the responses yes was looking to compare the costs of taking the trains etc for 4 vs hiring a car service for door to door pick up and drop off.

The challenge is with all the options figuring out the costs for luggage storage transportation etc. + trains etc. versus the ease and convenience of just jumping in a van and being dropped off in Hakone
