Coming to HK for the first time in late Nov, flying in on Thurs morning and out on Sunday evening. Friday is reserved for Disneyland --- this will likely be our first and only chance to visit a Disney theme park ever, and with the Christmas decor being up that week, this is a must-do for me and my partner (we are in early 30s). So that leaves us half of Thurs, the whole of Sat, and a few hours on Sun morning to experience the city.
Is this time-frame too short to squeeze in a visit to Big Buddha?
Pros: Site looks interesting and the cable car scenery is hands-down fantastic.
Cons: Sat will likely be crowded, and some reviews mention 2-hour queues at the cable car.
Would our time be better spent taking in the sights, vibes, and food in the city instead? Just curious to hear what the experts have to say.
It would be worth it if that is the main reason you are going.
One option is to take a bus (or even a blue taxi) up to the Big Buddha and then get the cable car back down - there tend to be few lines that way, particularly if you make an early start. Depending on your arrival time on Thursday you might be able to fit it in then - there are baggage storage lockers at the bottom of the cable car in Tung Chung.
+1 to that. Thursday morning is the time to go to the Buddha for you.
If you arrive just as the cable car starts service, use their storage facility for your luggage and if the line is short go for it.
If you're arriving before cable car opening hours you may also use the lockers in the basement of the next-door Citygate Mall for luggage storage, or even the storage at the cable car station in Ngong Ping. Going down early means you may very well have the cabin to yourselves, so no problem bringing your luggage on the cable car
Then from Tung Chung you may take the MTR, a bus or a taxi to get to your hotel. For specific suggestions let us know which hotel you stay.
