I am travelling Seoul - Shanghai - Manchester with Asiana operating the 1st, and Juneyao the 2nd flight. Seems i need to do a self-transfer by geting my luggage - going through customs - going to airline counter - going through security - going through customs - and I'm back in and can look for my gate. Is this the case? Has anyone gone through this before? I've never done a self-transfer, and I have 4hr 50min between my flights.
edit: I see the two airlines are "sharecode partners" but I dont know if that means I can be checked in for my 2nd flight in Seoul.
You are traveling on: OZ367 / HO1661.
Asiana and Juneyao are really code-sharing partners since they are both in Star Alliance. Also, your itinerary has the same terminal - T2 in Shanghai for your arrival and your departure flight.
In any case, I have checked the details and have received slightly undecided answer where it says "May need to collect & re-check baggage"... In reality, it seems that the final information you will encounter in Seoul airport at the time of check-in and not at all before that.
If your luggage is tagged all the way to Manchester, you do not have to do anything as far as the formalities in Shanghai are concerned and you do not have to fill out any forms. You will just walk from one to the other gate and you will not be a subject of immigration or customs inspection either. In reality, you will spend your entire layover in the airside area of Shanghai airport - T2 terminal.
In case if your luggage is not tagged all the way to Manchester, you will do the following:
1. You will fill out arrival card (you can get one on board the plane or at the airport upon arrival) and you will tick the box - transit on it.
2. You will proceed to automatic fingerprinting machines and you will get a confirmation for that.
3. You will approach 24/240 hour visa free transit desk where you will present the above documents + your flight tickets in order to obtain a temporary entry permit. This is free of any charge. This step is not necessary if you are a passport holder of a country that has visa free entry into China.
4. Cross the immigration and proceed to collect your luggage and to re-check it for your connecting flight.
5. Head to the gate for your next flight.
You have perfectly enough time to accomplish all these details and you should not bother yourself about this subject any more. I know, would be happy if only your luggage is tagged all the way to Manchester, but even if it is not, not a big deal, honestly.
Thanks so much for the details. Just to add that this is what I see when I try to checkin through Asiana's website
⚠️ You are partially checked in
Please check the information below:
You are checked in on your flight: Seoul - Shanghai
The check-in cannot be finalized online for your flight: Shanghai - Manchester. Please check in at the airport counter.
....
You are checked in on 1 flight. Please check in for other flights at the airport counter.
Well, this is a detail that tells us a lot, but again nothing decisively. In other words, you are checked-in for your first flight, but not for the second one. Also, it says that you will have to check-in at the airport counter, but it does not say where, in Seoul or in Shanghai.
Again, you should not worry about it at all. You will approach to the check-in counter in Seoul and you will see whether you will be able to perform your check-in there all the way to Manchester (hopefully) or you will have to perform the formalities upon landing in Shanghai airport.
The most important thing is, you have enough time, you should not feel under pressure and you should be aware that this is something that is done by literally hundreds of passengers in Shanghai on a daily basis. Nothing to worry about.
It would be great if you could write down short report about your experience after you have arrived in Manchester because people like to hear all of these details first hand and from a recent occurrence/experience.
My luggage was to Shanghai, on my flight there I filled the entry paper card for a transit visa. Main issue was that at customs in Shanghai - they wanted to see my visa documents online but I couldn't get an online version as Google is blocked... they accepted my paper version saying they will check with Korea and the UK. Then checked in my 2nd flight and went in ~
Edited: 5:06 pm, September 04, 2025by visa documents I mean I had the right to be in Korea and the right to go to the UK
by visa documents above, I mean showing I had right to be in Korea, and also I have the right to enter the UK
Edited: 5:07 pm, September 04, 2025I'm neither Korean, nor. British so I had a Korean visa and have a UK visa
Ivan G, I am glad you have performed your transfer as I have supposed you will. It is also very logical that you have been asked to present a visa for your entry into UK because you were about to formally enter China in Shanghai. Chinese authorities simply wanted (had to) to be certain that UK will accept you since you are not UK citizen, before they let you enter China.
Never mind, they accepted your documents, probably contacted their colleagues in Korea and UK and everything went as planned.
Ivan, it is important to understand that you were not granted a visa in China, but a temporary entry permit. This is different compared to a visa and is used for transit purposes.
In any case, I am glad your travel went well and thank you for your kind feedback/report. It is such a valuable contribution.
