Tips

I understand that the salaries of staff in India and Goa is a whole lot less than western countries so I was wondering how much you would tip.....is it 10% to 15% of the bill ? Did you tip the staff separately or just add it to the payment you make for the bill?

Please don't compare salaries in India with western countries, it's all relative to the local economy.

We will tip 10% or round up the bill.

Please don't introduce the completely stupid " USA tipping culture" into other countries like India.

I have to admit that I usually don't tip randomly because I expect the hotel/ restaurant etc owner to pay their staff a reasonable salary.

For an exceptionally friendly and good service at a restaurant I tip the staff separately from the bill.

Hi,

We would like to inform you that tipping in India is entirely at your discretion. You may choose to give a tip based on the quality of service received and according to your budget.

Thank you for your understanding.

Some times tip, but not often, if service was really good then yes

Some tourist restaurants are adding service charge on now , so watch for that

Never tip a taxi, they are overcharging you as it is

I remember waitressing at the local golf club (UK) in my teens and how we primarily judged people’s behaviour towards the staff and secondly whether they left a tip. It’s deeply ingrained in my psyche to always leave something UNLESS the service has been poor. Some places put a 5% service charge on the bill alongside the GST so you may wish to check that before deciding what to leave. My feeling is that 100 rupees will mean more to the recipient than it does to me.

some bills will have a service charge added but not many. If no charge, we will round it up to 10% or above. If the service is bad, no tip.

We often just round the bill up to leave a tip of up to 10% if we get good service . For a bill of say Rs9200 leave them a Rs10000 note.

We tip our room boy early on to ensure good cleaning etc, and maybe again if he is doing a good job. Some restaurant bills may include a service charge, but if they don't, we work on 10 % or rounding up, as yorkie says.

We don't tip if we pop in a shack whilst walking on the beach and just have a beer. We do tip the waiters when we go out for an evening meal as long as there are no service charges added to the bill .We always ask if the waiters share the tips as quite often more than one serves. . One place where we never tip is Chocolatte as the charge UK prices plus they add service charge and gratuities to the bill. But tipping is not compulsory .
