Where to stay

We hope to rent a house or condo on the island in an area where we can walk or bike to a beach, shopping and restaurants. Is that a possibility or will we need to drive everywhere?

Tybee Island is a compact, walkable destination, so it’s definitely possible to find a rental within walking or biking distance to beaches, shops, and restaurants. Most visitors who want to minimize driving focus on staying in the central part of the island near Tybee’s main commercial areas and the beach.

Best Areas to Stay:

  • South Beach/Beach Street Area: This area is right along the main beach and within walking distance of many restaurants, shops, and local attractions. You’ll be able to enjoy early morning walks on the beach and easy access to dining and casual shopping.
  • Mid-Island – Butler Avenue / Tybrisa Street: Slightly more residential, but still close enough to walk or bike to the beach and the main commercial district. Offers a quieter vibe while keeping convenience.
  • North Beach/Back River Area: A bit further from the main commercial district, but some rentals provide scenic views and still allow biking access to the beach and restaurants.

Walking and biking are very common on Tybee Island, and many rentals provide beach cruiser bikes or have bike rental shops nearby. However, if you plan to explore beyond the central areas, like Fort Pulaski National Monument or more distant dining spots, having a car can be convenient.

In summary, for a mix of convenience and minimal driving, focus on rentals near the central south or mid-island neighborhoods. You can easily walk or bike to most beaches, restaurants, and shops, making it a very pedestrian-friendly vacation spot.
