Airport Confusion Overnight Layover

We are arriving from Canada in the domestic terminal. We go through US customs in Canada. We have an overnight layover then we depart from the international terminal for Grand Cayman the next morning. I am so confused on what hotel to book. Should I book the Marriot Gateway off the domestic skyway and then what is the best way to get to the international terminal the next morning? A cab?

For your overnight layover at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Airport (ATL), it’s understandable to feel confused with the terminals and connections. Here’s a detailed guide to help you plan your stay and morning transfer.

Since you’re arriving from Canada through a domestic flight and clearing U.S. customs in Canada, you will land at ATL’s domestic terminal (Concourse T, A, B, C, or D depending on your airline). For your overnight stay, booking a hotel connected to the domestic terminal is convenient and will minimize stress, especially with luggage and an early morning departure.

  • Marriott Gateway at ATL – This is a solid choice as it is connected to the domestic terminal via the ATL SkyTrain. You can reach it easily after your arrival and won’t need to leave the airport property. Being on the domestic side is practical for your arrival, luggage, and access to airport amenities.

The next morning, you’ll need to get to the international terminal (Maynard H. Jackson Jr. International Terminal, Concourse F) for your flight to Grand Cayman. Here are your options:

  • SkyTrain: The ATL SkyTrain connects the domestic terminal and Concourse F (international terminal). It is free and runs frequently 24/7. From the Marriott, you can walk to the SkyTrain station, ride it to the international terminal, and reach Concourse F quickly and efficiently.
  • Airport Shuttle: Some hotels offer shuttle service to the international terminal, though it may be slower than the SkyTrain. Check with the Marriott if they provide direct shuttle access to Concourse F.
  • Taxi or Ride-Share (Uber/Lyft): While possible, using a cab or ride-share for travel within the airport area is unnecessary. The SkyTrain is faster and avoids traffic or extra cost.

Tips for a smooth overnight layover:

  • Book the Marriott Gateway or another hotel connected to the domestic terminal for convenience.
  • Verify your international flight check-in and security timing; plan to leave the hotel about 90–120 minutes before your flight to allow for airport security and boarding.
  • Use the SkyTrain in the morning—it is the simplest and fastest way to get from the domestic to the international terminal with luggage.

Following this plan, you can enjoy a stress-free overnight stay and a smooth transfer to your international departure the next morning.
