Gateway Arch

We are driving through St. Louis in May with 2 bus loads of kids. Would the Gateway Arch be a safe place to stop, maybe have lunch brought to the park and hang out at the park for a couple of hours so the kids could see the Arch?

The Gateway Arch and the surrounding Gateway Arch National Park are generally safe for daytime visits, including with groups of children. The park is a popular tourist destination, and security is present, especially near the Arch itself, the tram entrance, and visitor areas.

Here are some considerations and tips for your visit with 2 bus loads of kids:

  • Parking: There are paid parking lots and street parking nearby. For a large group, it’s recommended to coordinate parking ahead of time, possibly contacting the park or nearby garages to ensure enough space for buses.
  • Safety: The park is generally safe during the day. Keep in mind standard precautions with large groups of children, such as having chaperones, staying within sight of each other, and briefings about park boundaries.
  • Picnic and lunch: You can bring lunch to the park, but there are no designated picnic tables near the Arch itself. The grassy areas are open for groups to sit, but it’s best to bring blankets or portable seating.
  • Facilities: Restrooms are available in the park and in the Arch’s visitor center. Trash receptacles are provided, so clean-up after a picnic is straightforward.
  • Timing: Visiting in May is ideal for mild weather. Plan 2–3 hours for your stop to allow time to see the Arch, take photos, have lunch, and perhaps explore nearby walking paths.

Additional tips for a smooth visit:

  • Consider splitting the group into smaller subgroups for easier supervision and movement.
  • Arrive early to avoid heavier tourist traffic that may occur around mid-day.
  • Check the Arch visitor center website in advance for any events or closures that might affect your visit.

Overall, with basic planning, the Gateway Arch and surrounding park can be a safe, enjoyable, and educational stop for a large group of kids, including a picnic lunch outdoors.
