Reservations needed for Michigan October road trip?

Hi Wise Advisors,

Perhaps I'm premature with this question, as I'm just beginning to sort through the 17,000+ forum topics for Michigan!, but... We are thinking of a PIBE-- Play It By Ear-- road trip for 2 weeks to Michigan, from our home in NC. We're not City people, and we lean towards scenery-- mountains, shorelines, day hikes in woods--and small towns, talking with local people and supporting local businesses vs. chains as much as possible.

We're not picky about accommodations as long as they are clean, safe, with reasonably comfortable beds.

We prefer trips where we can make it up as we go, vs. planning every night ahead of time. However, where we live, we'd never consider going to our own NC mountains in October without reservations-- leaf looking is big business here!

How necessary is it to reserve accomodations ahead of time in Michigan during first 2 weeks of October?
