U-M transit

When I was a grad student, there was a parking lot in the NE by Plymouth road where I would park and take a bus in to campus. Is it still there?

Good question — yes, there *is* (or at least recently was) a “park-and-ride” lot on Plymouth Road that a grad student could use and then ride a bus in to University of Michigan (U-M) campus.

Here’s what I found (and what to check / confirm):

  • Plymouth Road Park & Ride Lot (3700 Plymouth Rd) — Historically this was the lot you parked in, near the interchange with US-23, and it served as a commuter lot for people riding into campus.
  • The lot had about 260 parking spots.
  • It was part of a “Park & Ride” program — meaning you park there, then take a bus (or shuttle) from the lot to campus instead of trying to park on campus.

That said — there is conflicting information that suggests the Plymouth Road lot may now be closed or have limited use: some publicly available parking-lot directories note it as “permanently closed.”

Because of that ambiguity, I’d recommend you do the following before relying on that lot:

  • Check the official U-M or local transit website (TheRide / U-M Parking & Transportation / LTP) for current status of the Plymouth Road Park & Ride — whether it accepts commuter parking currently.
  • Have a backup plan: there are other park-and-ride / commuter-lot options around Ann Arbor that feed buses to campus (e.g., the Green Road Park & Ride Lot).
  • If you return at night or outside regular bus-service hours, check U-M’s evening transit policies or alternative ride-home programs — U-M offers after-hours transit support depending on your lot and schedule.

Bottom line: Yes — the Plymouth Road park-and-ride you used as a grad student did exist (and likely still exists somewhere), but I can’t guarantee it’s still operating in the same way now. It’s worth calling or checking U-M / TheRide’s latest lot-status info before you plan on using it. If it’s closed, the Green Road lot or other commuter lots are good alternatives.
