Luaus
Hi,
I've looked at many reviews of luaus and still can't decide. We want an authentic experience without lots of silly jokes, etc. We care most about excellent dancing and music. We don't care that much about the food, but if the luau spends lots of time on bringing guests up and audience participation, it is not for us. We really want high quality.
So far on our list:
Toa luau
Polynesian Cultural Center -- but have read a lot of negative reviews
We've seen Nutridge recommended but it seems like it doesn't have live music.
We will be staying in Waikiki but can rent a car for a few days.
Open to other suggestions/recommendations.
Thanks!
It sounds like you're looking for a more traditional, authentic luau experience with an emphasis on quality performances rather than audience participation or humor. I understand your preferences and will do my best to offer some suggestions based on what you're seeking.
Based on your criteria, here are some luaus that I think might align better with your desires for an authentic, high-quality experience:
- Toa Luau: Toa Luau in Ko Olina is often highly recommended for its authenticity, traditional Polynesian performances, and beautiful setting. They offer a more intimate experience, focusing on traditional hula dancing and Polynesian music rather than gimmicky audience participation. The food is also highly regarded, but the focus is definitely on the cultural aspects of the performance. It’s a great option if you’re looking for something more traditional.
- Germaine's Luau: Located on a beachfront, this luau is known for its stunning sunset views and emphasis on traditional Polynesian music and hula. It’s a more relaxed environment with a focus on the cultural performance, not a lot of audience participation, and the food is presented in a more traditional style. The intimate setting and emphasis on quality performances make this a good option for what you're seeking.
- Paradise Cove Luau: While it can get a bit touristy at times, Paradise Cove still offers a very high-quality experience in terms of the performances and music. It's set on a beautiful beach and offers a more authentic feel than the heavily commercialized luaus. They have excellent hula dancing and Polynesian music, with a focus on the cultural story of the islands, which might appeal to you. The audience participation is optional, and you can skip that part if you'd prefer just to enjoy the show.
- Royal Hawaiian Luau (Aha Aina): This is a more upscale luau at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel in Waikiki, known for its elegant setting and refined presentation. It focuses on storytelling through music and dance rather than audience interaction. The food is also of a high standard, but the performance and cultural experience are the main focus. This would be a great option if you're looking for a more polished and intimate experience with a strong emphasis on the dance and music.
- Polynesian Cultural Center (PCC): While you mentioned reading some negative reviews, the Polynesian Cultural Center is still one of the most famous and well-regarded luaus in Hawaii. It's a bit larger and can have a more staged feel, but if you're okay with the size and the structure of the event, the cultural performances and authenticity are top-notch. The evening show, "Ha: Breath of Life," is highly praised for its dancing and live music, and it’s definitely more of a theatrical performance than a “tourist trap” event. They do offer a traditional luau with an emphasis on cultural heritage, so it could be worth considering, despite some mixed reviews.
As for Nutridge Luau, you're right that it doesn't offer live music, which may not meet your expectations for a high-quality luau. If live music and hula are a priority, I’d recommend skipping this one for now.
Since you'll be in Waikiki, I think a great option might be the Royal Hawaiian Luau if you don’t mind staying local, or perhaps considering Toa Luau for a more traditional experience if you're willing to drive to Ko Olina. Both offer exceptional performances without the gimmicks of audience participation.
Hope this helps narrow down your options, and I’m sure whichever luau you choose, you'll have an unforgettable experience with the culture, music, and dance of Hawaii!
