Best Surfing Beach

I have friends that have family who are from California and want to go to a good beach for surfing. Can anyone recommend a good beach area for them to stay at that they can surf?

Kauai is a fantastic place for surfing, with some of the most beautiful and iconic surf spots in Hawaii. The island offers a variety of beaches suitable for all levels of surfers, from beginners to experts. Here are some of the best beaches for surfing on Kauai, and where your friends can stay near them:

  • Hanalei Bay
Hanalei Bay is one of the most famous surf spots on Kauai and offers an incredible backdrop of lush mountains and beautiful scenery. The bay features a long stretch of beach with gentle waves on the inside, making it perfect for beginners, while the outer reef provides bigger waves for more advanced surfers. This beach is located on the North Shore, and nearby accommodations include vacation rentals, boutique hotels, and resorts in Hanalei town. It's a popular spot for both surfing and relaxing, with plenty of surf schools available for beginners.
  • Poipu Beach
Poipu Beach, located on the South Shore of Kauai, is another excellent spot for surfing, especially for beginners and intermediates. The waves here are generally more consistent and mellow, making it a great spot for those looking to learn or improve their skills. The area around Poipu has several beachfront resorts, including the popular Grand Hyatt Kauai and Koa Kea Hotel & Resort, offering convenient access to the beach and surf breaks.
  • Kealia Beach
Kealia Beach, located on the East Shore, is a long sandy beach known for its strong and consistent waves. It's a great spot for intermediate to advanced surfers, and it's less crowded compared to other spots on the island. There is a good beach park here, and while accommodations are a little further from the beach, you can find options in nearby Kapa'a, which is a charming town with shops, restaurants, and some vacation rental options.
  • Shipwrecks Beach
Shipwrecks Beach, located in the Poipu area on the South Shore, is famous for its powerful waves and is a popular surf spot for more experienced surfers. This beach is known for its strong shorebreak, so it's not the best spot for beginners, but it's a fantastic choice for advanced surfers looking for a challenge. You’ll find several resorts and luxury accommodations nearby, making it an ideal spot for those wanting to surf and enjoy high-end amenities.
  • Secrets Beach
Secrets Beach is a more secluded spot on the North Shore of Kauai, known for its waves that cater to experienced surfers. The beach is hidden behind lush foliage and requires a bit of a hike to reach, but it's worth it for those who want a quieter, less crowded surf experience. While there are no hotels directly on the beach, there are many vacation rentals and accommodations in Princeville, which is just a short drive away.

Other Considerations:
When planning a surfing trip to Kauai, it’s important to keep in mind that the island's North Shore can have large, powerful waves in the winter months, so your friends might want to visit during the summer when the waves on the North Shore tend to be smaller and more beginner-friendly. For a more relaxed surfing experience, the South Shore and East Shore offer more consistent and mellow waves year-round.

Each of these surf spots is surrounded by beautiful beaches and accommodations, so your friends can choose based on their skill level, preferred beach atmosphere, and nearby amenities. Whether they’re looking for a lively resort or a more secluded surf spot, Kauai has something for everyone!
