Hi,
My wife and I would like to go on a 4 or 5 day guided cycle to include accomodation bikes etc in Maine in September. We are looking at Backroads company but the reviews are a bit mixed.
Does anyone have any experience of their cycling trips please or any other recommendations,
Thank you in advance and kind regards,
John
Hi John,
It's great that you're looking into a cycling trip in Maine, especially in September! The fall season in Maine is stunning, with the vibrant foliage and cooler weather making it an ideal time for outdoor activities like cycling. Here are some thoughts on your question regarding guided cycling tours, including Backroads and other options to consider:
Backroads:
Backroads is a well-known company that offers guided cycling tours, including several in Maine. They are generally known for high-quality, well-organized trips, but as you've noticed, the reviews can be mixed. Some people rave about the ease of travel, support vehicles, and fantastic meals, while others mention that the cost may not always match the experience. If you decide to go with them, it’s worth checking the specific details of the Maine trip, as some routes or accommodations may be better than others. Some common highlights on their Maine tours include coastal routes, quaint small towns, and beautiful lighthouses.
For example, their “Coastal Maine” tour typically includes biking along the rugged coastline, through charming fishing villages, and even includes a boat trip to one of the small islands. They also provide excellent support staff, well-maintained bikes, and luggage transport, which can be a great way to relax and enjoy the experience without worrying about logistics.
Alternatives to Backroads:
If you want to explore other options, here are a few other guided cycling companies that are highly regarded:
VBT is another popular company that offers guided cycling tours, including in Maine. Their "Biking Coastal Maine" tour offers a similar route to Backroads, exploring Maine’s beautiful coastline, with a focus on quiet roads and natural beauty. VBT also provides high-quality bikes, experienced guides, and a laid-back pace. Many customers report a great balance of activity and relaxation, and their tours are usually a bit more budget-friendly than Backroads.
Summer Feet offers more customized, local experiences in Maine. They specialize in small group tours, which can be ideal if you prefer a more intimate experience. Their "Maine’s Coastal and Islands Tour" is a great option for people looking to explore the beauty of Maine's coast and islands while getting personalized attention. This company has a solid reputation for excellent guides and support, and they also offer self-guided tours if you prefer more independence.
Active Adventures is another solid choice, known for providing a great combination of cycling, hiking, and cultural experiences. Their "Maine Bike Tour" often includes beautiful coastal routes, as well as inland rides that showcase Maine’s forests, lakes, and charming villages. While they focus more on active adventures, their cycling tours are highly rated for a balanced mix of physical activity and sightseeing. They also provide excellent support throughout the journey.
Things to Keep in Mind:
Final Thoughts:
Each of the companies mentioned has its own strengths, but in general, for a first-time cycling trip in Maine, it might be worth trying a smaller, more intimate experience with a company like Summer Feet Cycling. If you're willing to spend a bit more for a well-established, larger tour, then Backroads or VBT are both great choices. Consider what type of experience you want — whether it's a more leisurely pace or a more active, challenging tour — and check reviews of the specific Maine tour to get a better sense of whether it aligns with your preferences.
Good luck with your planning, and I hope you both have an amazing time in Maine! The state is absolutely beautiful for cycling, and September will be the perfect time to visit.
