Thank you for the update regarding the landslide on Hana Highway. As you mentioned, a landslide occurred at mile marker 22 near Puaa Ka’a State Park, blocking one lane. The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) is responding to the situation, but it’s always best to stay updated when planning any drives along this scenic but sometimes unpredictable route.
Here are a few key points to consider when traveling on Hana Highway during this situation:
- Check for Road Closures or Delays: Before you head out, make sure to check for the latest updates from HDOT or local authorities. They may have more specific information on the road conditions, estimated reopening times, or detours.
- Drive Cautiously: Even if the road is open, landslides and debris can be unpredictable, so always drive with caution, especially near areas with steep inclines and curves.
- Allow Extra Time: The one-lane blockage might cause delays, so plan your trip with extra time in case there is a wait. The Hana Highway is beautiful, but slow-moving, so factor in additional time for stops and sightseeing as well.
- Alternative Routes: If you are concerned about further delays, you might consider checking for alternative routes or postponing your trip if the situation worsens.
- Police & HDOT Updates: For real-time updates, check with the local police or HDOT’s website. You can also tune into local news or traffic reports for any further advisories.
As always, Hana Highway offers stunning views, but it’s important to prioritize safety, especially in challenging weather conditions or after landslides. Stay safe and enjoy your trip to Hana!
