Beijing to Lhasa return

Hi, me and my daughter are going to china to do a Great Wall trek and want to go to Lhasa as a bolt on after the trek. Can anyone recommend a reliable company we can book with. As I understand you need to travel into Tibet with a guide? I think I we would need the company to arrange the visas also. I’d be grateful for any advice or help you can give. Thank you

Traveling from Beijing to Lhasa requires special planning because all travelers to Tibet need a Tibet Travel Permit, and independent travel is not allowed. You must book through a licensed tour operator who can provide the permit and guide services.

Here’s how you can approach it:

  • Choose a reliable tour operator: There are many reputable agencies in Beijing that specialize in Tibet travel. Examples include Lhasa Travel, Tibet Vista, and Explore Tibet. These companies can arrange flights, train tickets, hotel accommodations, permits, and guided tours.
  • Permit requirements: You will need a Tibet Travel Permit, which is mandatory for all non-Chinese citizens. The tour operator will handle this for you. Typically, you will need to provide scanned copies of your passport and Chinese visa.
  • Guide requirement: Travel within Tibet is only allowed with a registered guide. The operator will assign a guide who will accompany you during your stay in Lhasa and other Tibetan regions.
  • Visa arrangements: While you need a Chinese visa for Beijing, the Tibet Travel Permit is separate and arranged by the tour company. Some operators also help coordinate any other required permits, such as for certain restricted areas outside Lhasa.

Additional tips:

  • Book as early as possible, as permits can take a few weeks to process, especially during peak season (April–October).
  • Decide whether you want to fly or take the train from Beijing to Lhasa. The train is scenic but takes about 40 hours, while the flight is much faster (around 4 hours).
  • Be prepared for high altitude in Lhasa (3,650 meters / 11,975 feet). Allow time for acclimatization, especially for your daughter.
  • Confirm all itinerary details with the tour operator, including hotel, transport, and guide services, to ensure a smooth trip.

In summary, booking a reliable Beijing-based Tibet tour operator is the most secure and hassle-free way to visit Lhasa, as they will take care of permits, guides, and logistics.
