Car Hire- Is international driving license required?
Hi,
I'll be travelling to California, Nevada and touching Arizona. I'll be travelling from the UK I've read I won't need an international license for the car hire but just wanted confirmation if there is anything more I need to do?
Thank you
For UK residents traveling to the US and renting a car, you generally do not need an International Driving Permit (IDP) as long as your UK driver's license is in English and has a photo. Here's what you need to know:
- UK License Validity: Your standard UK driving license is typically valid for renting a car in California, Nevada, and Arizona without any additional documentation, provided it is in English and includes a photo.
- International Driving Permit (IDP): While not strictly required for UK travelers, an IDP can be useful in some situations (e.g., if your license is in a non-Latin alphabet or if you encounter any bureaucratic hiccups). It can be useful if you plan to rent a car in rural areas or smaller towns, but for most major car rental agencies in big cities, it isn’t necessary.
- Age Requirement: Most rental agencies in the US have a minimum age requirement of 21 to rent a car. Some may have additional fees for drivers under 25, so check with your rental company in advance.
- Insurance: It's always a good idea to ensure you're covered, either through your car rental company or through travel insurance. Most car rental agencies will offer insurance options at the time of booking.
Additional Tips:
- Credit Card and Deposit: Make sure to bring a valid credit card for the rental deposit, as many car rental companies require it.
- Drive Responsibly: Be sure to familiarize yourself with US road rules, such as speed limits, seat belt laws, and the legal drinking age, which is 21.
- Rental Policies: It’s always a good idea to read the rental company’s policies, especially regarding fuel, mileage, and insurance coverage.
So, no, an International Driving Permit isn't a necessity unless you feel more comfortable having one. Just ensure your UK driving license is valid, and you should be good to go! Have a great trip!
