Route 2 or 302?

Hello All! I've looked through the forums for this answer, but the answers I've seen are 15 or more years old. If there's a more recent post I apologize for missing it. This year I'm cutting across Vermont & NH on my way to Acadia. It's been 8 years since I've driven that way. I took 302 back then, but I really do not remember much. Leaving NH (Franconia) I'll be roughly near both US 2 and 302 and unsure which route to take across Maine. Google is telling me they are both about 4.5-5 hours from Trenton, despite 302 being a bit longer in distance, its slightly faster in time. Is that accurate?

I would really like some advice on which route is an easier drive: Are they both mostly just 2 lanes? I'm assuming Route 2 goes through more towns, and therefore the speed limit changes more often? Route 2 I'd assume have have less traffic?

Not really looking to stop anywhere, just want a stress free 5 hours. 😁 Appreciate any general advice & thoughts on the routes very much. Thanks!

When deciding between US Route 2 and Route 302 for your trip from Franconia, NH to Acadia, both routes are great options, but each has its pros and cons depending on your preferences for the drive. Here’s a breakdown to help you make an informed choice:

Route 2 (US 2)

Route 2 is a scenic route that stretches across Maine and passes through smaller towns, offering a more relaxed drive with less commercial traffic. It’s more of a "back road" experience and can be more peaceful compared to 302, but it comes with some downsides:

  • Traffic & Speed Limits: As you guessed, US 2 goes through more towns, so you’ll encounter more speed limit changes, especially as you pass through rural areas or small towns. However, this also means the pace is slower at times, and you may have to deal with stop signs or lights, especially near towns.
  • Road Quality: The road is mostly two lanes, and while it’s generally in good condition, you might encounter some slower sections where the road isn't as wide or fast-moving. The drive is very scenic, though, so you’ll be able to enjoy the Maine countryside.
  • Less Traffic: US 2 tends to have less overall traffic compared to 302, especially as you get further into Maine. This means less congestion, which could lead to a more relaxing and stress-free drive.

Route 302

Route 302 is a bit longer in distance, but it’s a more direct route that passes through larger towns and is a well-traveled highway. Here’s a breakdown of the 302 route:

  • Faster Travel: While it may be slightly longer in distance, Route 302 can be faster due to fewer towns along the route and more continuous driving. It is a major highway and generally has better flow compared to US 2, so you’re less likely to experience significant slowdowns, especially outside of urban areas.
  • Scenic Views: While it’s not as remote or rural as US 2, Route 302 still offers some scenic views, particularly as it passes along lakes, rivers, and mountains. You’ll get a good balance of nature and convenience.
  • More Traffic: Route 302 tends to have more traffic, particularly around busy areas or near larger towns like Bridgton or Naples. Expect more frequent traffic lights, speed limit changes, and occasional congestion, especially during peak hours.

Final Thoughts

If you’re looking for a more scenic, quiet, and less stressful drive with fewer towns and a more "off-the-beaten-path" experience, US Route 2 is a great choice. However, if you prefer a slightly faster, smoother drive with more highway stretches and are okay with a bit more traffic, Route 302 will be more convenient.

As for the time and distance, while Google says both routes are around 4.5-5 hours, actual travel time can depend on traffic conditions, stops, and your driving speed. US 2 will likely feel slower due to the smaller towns and winding roads, while 302 can feel more efficient due to the larger road infrastructure.

Recommendation

  • If you prefer a quieter, more scenic experience and are okay with a bit of slowness, go with US 2.
  • If you’re looking for a faster, more straightforward drive and don’t mind a bit more traffic, Route 302 will be your best bet.

Both routes are beautiful and enjoyable, so either way, you’ll have a pleasant drive through Maine on your way to Acadia!
