Coronado/maritime museum?

We are trying to make a plan for tomorrow (4/27) and we were wanting a beach where we can look for shells, kids can play in the sand/wade in the water. However, we also would like the maritime museum. Would Coronado beach be a good choice or another one near the maritime museum? I know parking can be ugly on the weekends but we’re ok getting there early. Just not sure how early we should aim for? Also, we maybe could give up maritime if you think Torrey pines would be better… we are staying in La Jolla. Just trying to find something beachy/pretty/naturey and if we can match it with maritime that would be great but if there’s another suggestion that would be ok too. We did La Jolla area today. Thank you!

For a combination of beach fun for kids and a visit to the Maritime Museum in San Diego, Coronado Beach is an excellent choice. It’s wide, sandy, and very kid-friendly, with gentle waves perfect for wading and playing. It’s also very scenic, with the iconic Hotel del Coronado in the background.

Beach and maritime combination:

  • Arrive early, around 8–8:30 AM, especially on a weekend, to secure parking near the beach. Coronado has metered street parking and some paid lots close to the shoreline.
  • After a few hours of beach time, you can drive to the Maritime Museum of San Diego in the Embarcadero area of downtown. The drive from Coronado Beach takes roughly 15–20 minutes via the Coronado Bridge.
  • The Maritime Museum is home to historic ships including the Star of India, submarine USS Dolphin, and several smaller vessels. Plan about 1.5–2 hours for a good visit, which is manageable for kids if you space it out with some beach time first.

Alternative beach options closer to the Maritime Museum:

  • Seaport Village area or Embarcadero Marina Parks: Small sandy areas where kids can play, but these are less natural and more limited than Coronado Beach.
  • Mission Beach or Pacific Beach: Closer to La Jolla than Coronado but slightly further from the Maritime Museum. Offers boardwalks, wide sand, and lots of kid-friendly amenities, though parking can be competitive.
  • Torrey Pines State Beach: Beautiful and natural with cliffs and tide pools, great for exploring, but waves can be stronger and it’s farther from the Maritime Museum, making a combined visit more rushed.

Overall, if your priority is a relaxing, classic beach experience and you want to include the Maritime Museum, Coronado Beach in the morning followed by a midday museum visit works well. If you prefer more natural scenery and hiking with tide pools, Torrey Pines is great, but it’s less convenient for combining with the museum in one day.
