Is sewage smell still a thing at Honua Kai?

Hi everyone, found some great deals for a one bedroom suite at Honua Kai for our holidays this August. I’ve been reading reviews and the ones that complain about sewage smells were from a few years ago. I don’t see any recent complaints about this issue. Could someone please confirm if this is no longer an issue? We usually stay at Wailea Ekahi, but thought our 11 year old will probably enjoy the pools at HK more. Thanks so much for any insight you might have.

Honua Kai Resort in Lahaina has had reports in the past of occasional sewage smells, particularly in certain lower-level units or near the pool areas. However, based on more recent guest feedback, these issues appear to have largely been addressed. Most guests in the last couple of years report no noticeable sewage odor, and many praise the resort for its well-maintained pools, grounds, and modern suites.

Here are a few considerations to keep in mind when booking at Honua Kai:

  • Higher floor units tend to have better airflow and are less likely to experience any faint odors, compared to ground-level units.
  • Booking directly with the resort or reputable VRBO/Airbnb owners may give you the option to request specific buildings or floors, which can help avoid past problem areas.
  • The resort has multiple pools and water features, so even if a minor odor were to appear near a particular area, you usually have plenty of alternative spaces to enjoy.

For families with children, especially around 11 years old, Honua Kai’s pools and kid-friendly amenities make it a popular choice. Comparing it to Wailea Ekahi, Honua Kai offers a livelier atmosphere with lots of pool activities, while Wailea is quieter and more resort-focused.

  • If your priority is pools and an engaging experience for your child, Honua Kai is likely the better choice.
  • If you prefer a quieter, more serene beach vacation without the busy pool environment, Wailea Ekahi may still appeal more.

Overall, current reviews suggest that the sewage smell issue is not a common problem anymore. Choosing a higher floor or building away from the lower levels should further minimize any risk.
