Where to stay in San Francisco

Hey,

I'm visiting San Francisco in a few weeks staying in Union Square at Hotel Zetta San Francisco.

I've heard about the homeless issue around the area. Should I keep the booking or look at another area?

Thank you

Staying in Union Square is still a convenient choice for first-time visitors to San Francisco. It’s centrally located with easy access to public transportation, shopping, restaurants, theaters, and cable cars. Hotel Zetta is modern, well-reviewed, and close to many attractions, so from a logistical standpoint, it’s a solid base.

Regarding the homeless issue, it’s true that Union Square and surrounding areas, including Market Street and parts of Tenderloin, have visible homeless populations. Most visitors don’t experience serious safety problems, but you may notice tents or people asking for money, and some streets can feel a little gritty, especially after dark.

Tips to feel safe and comfortable while staying in Union Square:

  • Stick to well-trafficked streets and avoid wandering into side streets after dark.
  • Keep belongings secure and be aware of pickpockets in crowded areas, as you would in any big city.
  • Use rideshare or public transit instead of walking alone late at night if you’re concerned.
  • Hotel staff can provide tips on the safest routes to nearby attractions.

If the visible homelessness would affect your comfort or experience, you could consider neighborhoods slightly farther from Union Square that are still central, such as:

  • Fisherman’s Wharf – more touristy, cleaner streets, close to the waterfront, but pricier and busier.
  • Embarcadero / Ferry Building area – scenic, safe, good dining, and easy access to public transit.
  • Nob Hill / Russian Hill – upscale and quiet, still within walking distance or a short cable car ride to Union Square.

Overall, if convenience and being in the heart of the city are important, keeping your Union Square booking is reasonable. Just plan to be mindful of your surroundings and travel with the usual city awareness.
