Weather / clothes questions

Hello,

Starting to pack for our week next week.

How cold the night is?

Do I need a warm fleece or a jeans jacket will be enough?

Visiting Volcano on the Big Island can be quite different from the coastal areas in Hawaii because of the elevation. The village of Volcano sits at around 4,000 feet above sea level, which means temperatures are cooler, especially at night and early morning.

Daytime temperatures are usually mild, often in the mid-70s°F (24°C), but it can feel cooler if it’s cloudy or raining. At night, temperatures commonly drop into the mid-50s°F (around 13°C), and sometimes can dip into the low 50s°F (11-12°C) depending on weather conditions.

Regarding clothing:

  • A lightweight jacket may be sufficient during the day if you’re used to mild weather, but evenings and early mornings can feel chilly.
  • A warm fleece or a layered jacket is recommended for night-time or if you plan to spend extended time outdoors, such as at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park viewpoints or hiking short trails.
  • Comfortable walking shoes are advisable since some areas in the park can be uneven or muddy, especially if it rains.
  • Don’t forget a rain layer or a waterproof jacket; Volcano tends to get occasional showers.

In summary, a jeans jacket might be okay for daytime, but for nighttime outings or early morning visits to the park, a fleece or warmer layer will make your visit much more comfortable.
