Sunset Hike

We are going to be getting into Yosemite West around 5:00 p.m. on June 16th. We are wondering what the best sunset hike would be... going up to glacier point or driving into the valley to Artist Point or a different view point? Thanks for the help!

Arriving in Yosemite West around 5:00 p.m. gives you a nice window for a sunset hike or viewpoint, but your options will be limited by daylight and distance. Sunset in mid-June in Yosemite is typically around 8:20–8:30 p.m., so you have a few hours to enjoy a scenic spot without rushing.

Considerations:

  • Yosemite West is about 20–30 minutes from Glacier Point and roughly 20–30 minutes from the valley floor, depending on traffic.
  • At this time of day, shorter hikes or viewpoints accessible by car are ideal to maximize sunset enjoyment without strenuous effort after a long travel day.

Best Options for Sunset:

  • Glacier Point: This is one of the most iconic sunset viewpoints in Yosemite. It offers panoramic views of Yosemite Valley, Half Dome, Vernal and Nevada Falls, and the High Sierra. The road from Yosemite West will take about 30 minutes, and you can either hike part of the Four-Mile Trail down (takes 2–3 hours, so not ideal) or simply enjoy the view from the Glacier Point overlook. Arriving around 6:30–7:00 p.m. gives you plenty of time to watch the light change.
  • Artist Point: Located in the valley near Sentinel Bridge, this is a shorter drive from Yosemite West and allows for a quick walk to the viewpoint. It’s particularly famous for reflections of Half Dome in the Merced River, and it can be excellent for photography, especially at sunset. The hike is minimal, making it ideal if you’re tired from travel.
  • Tunnel View: A classic and easily accessible viewpoint from the valley floor. This viewpoint gives a sweeping perspective of El Capitan, Bridalveil Fall, and Half Dome. It’s very close to the road, making it easy to reach and perfect for a short stop at sunset.

Recommendation:

If you want a dramatic, sweeping sunset without a strenuous hike, Glacier Point is the top choice. You’ll have a 180-degree view of the valley and surrounding peaks, and it’s a memorable way to start your Yosemite visit. If you prefer something easier and closer with less driving, Tunnel View or Artist Point in the valley are excellent alternatives, offering beautiful light on Half Dome and El Capitan.

Tip: Bring a light jacket, water, and perhaps a small snack. Even in June, evenings at Glacier Point can be chilly, and you’ll want to enjoy the sunset comfortably.
