3 hours or so, with an 8 year old

I'm attending a conference in Lafayette, but am flying into MSY with my 8 year old.

1) We arrive at 12:30 but will need to get to Lafayette before it gets dark.

What would you suggest seeing in the 3-4 hours we have in New Orleans? (not big foodies)

2) I assume parking is terrible, should I plan to pick up the rental car after our brief exploration of the city?

Thank you so much. On the return trip our flight is around 5:30 so we may be able to revisit an important sight or two.

It sounds like you have a limited amount of time in New Orleans, but there are still some wonderful, family-friendly sights you can explore in 3-4 hours. Since you’re traveling with an 8-year-old and are not big foodies, I’ll suggest activities that are engaging and suitable for both you and your child, while keeping the driving time manageable. Here’s how you can make the most of your short visit:

  • 1) Suggested Things to Do:
    - Audubon Aquarium of the Americas: This is a fantastic place to visit, especially with kids. It’s located along the riverfront, making it easy to access from the airport area. Your child will love the variety of exhibits, including the large saltwater tanks, a massive Gulf of Mexico display, and even a penguin exhibit. It’s a great, interactive experience for families. - Jackson Square and St. Louis Cathedral: If you're interested in some local history and architecture, Jackson Square is an iconic spot. It’s surrounded by historic buildings, including the beautiful St. Louis Cathedral. Kids love to walk around the square, watch street performers, and explore the nearby shops. It’s a quick, free activity that lets you soak in the atmosphere of the French Quarter. - French MarketMississippi Riverfront Walk: A peaceful stroll along the riverfront could be a nice way to relax and take in some fresh air. You can walk along the scenic area near the Audubon Aquarium or check out the Riverwalk Marketplace, which is a family-friendly spot with shops and scenic views of the river. It’s a nice break if you need something low-key and fun for your 8-year-old.
  • 2) Rental Car Advice:
    - Yes, parking can be challenging in the French Quarter, and it can be expensive. If you plan to explore the city first and then head to Lafayette, it would make sense to pick up your rental car after your brief exploration. This way, you can avoid the hassle of parking in the downtown area and enjoy the sights without worrying about finding a parking spot. There are parking garages in the French Quarter, but they can be limited and pricey, so it’s best to plan accordingly.
  • 3) Return Trip Suggestions:
On your return trip, with a flight around 5:30, you may have some extra time to revisit a spot or two. If you really enjoyed the aquarium, or if your child loved the Jackson Square area, those would be great options to revisit. Alternatively, if you didn’t have a chance to visit the National WWII Museum, that could be an educational and interesting stop for both you and your child, and it’s located fairly close to the airport.

In short, the aquarium is a top pick for kids, and exploring Jackson Square offers a nice mix of history, culture, and relaxation. By picking up the rental car after your exploration, you’ll avoid some of the city's traffic and parking challenges. Enjoy your short visit to New Orleans!
