Best place to stay Rosensteil School/self guided tour UM

Hi, We are traveling as a group of 3 adults to visit the Rosenstiel School first and then a self guided tour of the University of Miami the following day. Where is the best area to look for accommodations? We will probably stay just a night or possibly two next month. We are driving from NW FL so free parking would be awesome, if possible. So far we have looked at hotels and house rentals in Coconut Grove, Coral Gables and Dade City. Are these our best options for proximity? Any other suggestions? Thank you!

Nice plan — visiting the Rosenstiel School (RSMAS) and the main University of Miami (UM) campus on back-to-back days is totally doable from either Coconut Grove or Coral Gables. The Rosenstiel School is on Virginia Key (4600 Rickenbacker Causeway) and the University of Miami’s main campus is in Coral Gables, so your choice comes down to whether you want to prioritize a shorter morning to Rosenstiel (Coconut Grove / Key Biscayne / Brickell area) or being literally next to the UM campus (Coral Gables).

Short summary recommendation: If you want the easiest, most relaxed logistics for both visits, pick Coconut Grove or Coral Gables. Coconut Grove puts you a short drive from the Rickenbacker Causeway and gives a pleasant neighborhood to stay in; Coral Gables places you right by the UM campus so your self-guided tour is a walk or short drive away. Both neighborhoods have hotels that sometimes offer free parking — but truly free parking at downtown/urban Miami hotels is less common than at suburban properties, so check the specific property before booking.

  • Coconut Grove — Pros: close to Rickenbacker Causeway (easy morning run to Rosenstiel), leafy neighborhood with cafes, easy parking options at some hotels, and straightforward drive to Coral Gables for your UM tour the next day. Good middle ground if you want to split the difference.
  • Coral Gables — Pros: right next to the UM main campus (many UM buildings and parking structures are within walking distance), ideal if the priority is the self-guided UM visit. Coral Gables also has boutique hotels and occasional properties that advertise free parking. Note: university parking is generally paid (Pavia Garage and other lots), so bring a card or coins or follow UM visitor parking instructions.
  • Key Biscayne / Brickell — Pros: short drive to the Rosenstiel School and pleasant hotel options (Key Biscayne closer to RSMAS; Brickell is a little farther but convenient if you want more urban amenities). Consider these if you prefer waterfront stays or downtown vibe.

Why Coconut Grove or Coral Gables make the most sense

  • The Rosenstiel School is at 4600 Rickenbacker Causeway (Virginia Key / Miami Seaquarium area), so neighborhoods bordering the Causeway (Coconut Grove, Key Biscayne, Brickell) give the shortest drive.
  • UM’s main Coral Gables campus is compact and centrally located in Coral Gables — staying in Coral Gables reduces travel time and parking hassle for your self-guided tour.
  • UM runs a shuttle between Miller Circle (on the Coral Gables campus) and the Rosenstiel School, so if you prefer not to drive to Virginia Key you can use the school shuttle — this makes staying in Coral Gables especially convenient. (Check current shuttle schedule ahead of time.)

Practical parking & hotel tips

  • Free parking at hotels: Some Coconut Grove and Coral Gables hotels list free parking as an amenity — search filters on booking sites will show that. Call the hotel to confirm “free” means included and not limited to one spot or subject to resort fees.
  • On-campus parking at UM: Visitor parking on the Coral Gables campus is usually in garages/lots (e.g., Pavia Garage) and is paid — if you want to avoid campus parking fees, stay within walking distance in Coral Gables.
  • Rosenstiel parking & access: Rosenstiel has on-site parking for visitors, but Virginia Key is its own island — allowing extra time for inbound traffic and the causeway. If you prefer not to drive, ask about the Rosenstiel shuttle pick-up points (Miller Circle) or park in Coconut Grove and take a short drive/or taxi.

Hotel types & example searches

  • If free parking is a must: focus searches on “hotels with free parking” in Coconut Grove and Coral Gables and call properties directly to confirm availability on your travel dates (examples of hotels that often show free parking in search results include Hampton Inn Miami-Coconut Grove/Coral Gables and some small inns/VRBOs).
  • If you want to be closest to UM for an easy self-guided tour: book in Coral Gables (walking distance to campus).
  • If you want easiest morning access to Rosenstiel: book in Coconut Grove, Key Biscayne, or even Brickell — all are short drives to the Rickenbacker Causeway.

Suggested plan that balances both visits

  • Stay in Coconut Grove (one night): short morning drive to Rosenstiel for your first day appointment; evening in Coconut Grove.
  • Either drive to Coral Gables the next morning (short drive) for your self-guided UM tour or book the same-night switch to a Coral Gables hotel if you prefer no morning driving. The Rosenstiel shuttle also connects Miller Circle (UM) and Rosenstiel if you’d like to avoid driving to Virginia Key.

Final tips

  • Call the Rosenstiel School’s visitor desk (RSMAS) and UM admissions (if you need maps/visitor parking guidance) before you go — addresses and visitor parking instructions are on their websites.
  • Reserve hotels early and confirm parking policies in writing (hotel confirmation email) so there are no surprises when you arrive.
  • If you give me your exact dates and whether free parking is an absolute requirement, I can look up specific hotels that show free parking and are near Coconut Grove or Coral Gables and give a short list you can book from.

Enjoy your trip — both Rosenstiel and the Coral Gables campus are lovely, and with either Coconut Grove or Coral Gables as your base you’ll keep driving time low while getting a pleasant Miami neighborhood experience.
