Location for lodging in Camden

We are looking for lodging in Camden for 2 nights at the end of September. I’m trying to get a feel for the area and am hoping for insight from the TA folks.

When looking at the map it appears that many of the popular and recommended B&Bs and inns are located on Hwy 1.

Are there sidewalks in the area to walk towards the “town and harbor?”

I am not familiar with how noisy/busy Hwy 1 is in Camden.

I don’t know if it’s necessary to be able to walk to town.

Recommendations please.

Camden is a charming coastal town in Maine, known for its scenic harbor, historic architecture, and walkable downtown. Many of the inns and B&Bs are located along or near Route 1, which runs through town. While Route 1 is a main road, it’s generally not overly congested, especially at the end of September when summer tourism has slowed. Some areas along Route 1 do have sidewalks, but in a few stretches you may need to walk on the road shoulder, so it’s important to check the specific property location if walkability is important to you.

If your priority is walking easily to Camden town and harbor, staying closer to the center of town—particularly near the intersections with Mechanic Street, Washington Street, or Main Street—offers the most convenience. From here, you can reach the harbor, shops, and restaurants in just a few minutes on foot without dealing with busier parts of Route 1.

Here are some lodging suggestions based on location, ease of walking to town, and quality:

  • Camden Harbour Inn: Slightly off Route 1 but within easy walking distance to town and the harbor. Offers views of the harbor and comfortable rooms. Sidewalks and quiet streets make walking pleasant.
  • The Inns at Harbor Ridge: Located a short drive or 10–15 minute walk from downtown. Quieter area, some waterfront views, and spacious accommodations. Great for a more peaceful stay while still accessible to the harbor.
  • Lord Camden Inn: Central location close to the harbor and shops. Walking to town is very easy. Small, boutique-style inn with charming rooms and friendly service.
  • Camden Riverhouse: Located near the harbor, allows walking to shops, restaurants, and waterfront. Quiet side streets make it easy to explore without crossing busy roads.

If you are okay with driving short distances, some inns and B&Bs slightly further along Route 1 or on nearby side streets can offer larger rooms, more privacy, and sometimes waterfront views. Even if not within immediate walking distance, driving in Camden is easy and parking is generally accessible.

  • Sidewalks exist in parts of Route 1, but check the exact location of the inn for safe walking access.
  • If walking into town is a priority, aim for inns located within half a mile of the harbor or central Main Street.
  • For a quieter experience, consider lodging a little off Route 1 but still within a short drive or walk to the center.

In summary, Camden offers a variety of lodging options. Staying slightly off Route 1 near the harbor or in the central downtown area provides both easy walking access to town and a quieter environment. Consider your priorities—proximity to town versus quiet and views—to select the best fit.
