Trip Report: 5 nights in Acadia in July 2025

We just returned from a wonderful 5-night stay in Bar Harbor to visit Acadia NP. I thought I’d type up a quick trip report in case it helps other travelers. I’ll post each day as a separate reply below. Some info about us: it was my husband and me on the trip, and we stayed in the cottage at Holbrook House. Highly recommend this lodging for couples who would like to stay in Bar Harbor but a little removed from the busy downtown area.

We drove from IL and also stopped at Cuyahoga NP, Niagara Falls, and Indiana Dunes NP but I will focus just on the Maine portion for this report.

It sounds like you had a fantastic trip to Acadia NP and Bar Harbor! A 5-night stay is a great amount of time to explore both the park and the surrounding area without feeling too rushed. Staying at Holbrook House, just outside the bustling downtown, is ideal for couples who want a balance of convenience and quiet. The cottage offers privacy while still keeping you within a short drive or walk to restaurants, shops, and the waterfront.

For anyone planning a similar trip, here are some highlights and suggestions based on your report:

  • Acadia National Park Scenic Drives: Park Loop Road is essential. It provides access to iconic spots like Sand Beach, Thunder Hole, and Otter Cliffs. Early mornings or late afternoons are best for fewer crowds and better lighting for photos.
  • Hiking Options: Even for moderate walkers, there are plenty of easy-to-moderate trails such as Jordan Pond Path, Ocean Path from Sand Beach to Otter Cliffs, and the carriage roads around Eagle Lake. They offer beautiful coastal and forest scenery without steep climbs.
  • Bar Harbor Dining: Take advantage of the local seafood—lobster rolls, fried clams, and fresh oysters. Many popular spots do not take reservations, so plan for possible waits, especially in July.

Other useful tips:

  • Parking: Summer can be busy, so consider arriving early at popular trailheads or using shuttle buses if available to avoid long waits.
  • Sunrise/Sunset: Cadillac Mountain is the first place to see the sunrise in the U.S. If you’re not into very early mornings, sunset views from the park loop or nearby cliffs are stunning.
  • Nearby Towns: Consider a short drive to smaller towns or villages nearby for a quieter experience—places like Southwest Harbor or Northeast Harbor have charm without the downtown crowds.
  • Weather: July is generally pleasant, but mornings and evenings can be cool near the water. Layering is recommended.

Overall, your approach of balancing time in Bar Harbor with easy access to Acadia’s highlights seems perfect for a 5-night trip. Staying slightly outside downtown, enjoying scenic drives, moderate hikes, and local cuisine provides a well-rounded Maine experience without feeling rushed.
