Looking at Siesta or Longboat with two teen boys ages 14 & 16. They like freedom to go places on their own. Is one location better than the other? Where should we look to stay (what area) to walk to places? We did Anna Maria last SB and liked it but looking to try something different this year. Looking for end of March/beg of April. Couldn’t find many rentals, maybe they are booked? Is a resort an option? TIA!
Both Siesta Key and Longboat Key are great options for a family vacation, but they offer slightly different vibes, so it really depends on the experience you're looking for with your teens.
Siesta Key is a more vibrant, bustling spot with a lot of activities for teens, such as shopping, dining, and outdoor adventures. The area around Siesta Key Village has a variety of restaurants, cafes, and shops, and you can easily walk around the village. There are also options for water sports like kayaking, paddleboarding, and even renting bikes to explore the island. If your teens want a bit more independence, Siesta Key's atmosphere makes it easier for them to walk around and find things to do. Siesta Beach is famous for its beautiful white sand and is often a popular spot for tourists.
Longboat Key, on the other hand, tends to be quieter and more residential, with fewer crowds. If you're looking for a more relaxing and less commercialized environment, Longboat Key is a great choice. It's perfect for families that prefer a slower pace and a more private experience. While there are a few restaurants and shops, it's not as walkable or active as Siesta Key. However, Longboat does have some beautiful beaches and is home to several resorts and high-end vacation rentals. If your teens are into quieter beach days and relaxation, Longboat Key could be ideal, but if they want more options for independence and activities, Siesta Key might be the better fit.
In terms of rentals, both areas have a variety of options, but availability can definitely be tight, especially for the end of March and early April, as it's a popular spring break time. Many places book up early for this period, so it’s a good idea to check on multiple platforms, including VRBO, Airbnb, and local property managers. If you’re struggling to find rentals, you might want to consider booking as early as possible for next year, or even look for last-minute deals, though availability might still be limited.
Regardless of which island you choose, both locations offer beautiful beaches and easy access to water activities. If your teens are looking for a more active, walkable area with lots to do, Siesta Key might be a better choice. If they prefer a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere, Longboat Key could be the perfect spot.
Lastly, if you're unable to find availability through VRBO, consider broadening your search to other rental platforms or contact local property managers for help with finding last-minute deals. Enjoy your trip!
