architectural bookstores
Hi
I will be coming to chicago and staying in the threater district next week.
When I am in Chicago I would like to go to some bookstores or newstands to learn more about the many architectural things that the city is known for
As I won't be in Chicago for more than 1 day.
Can anyone recommend the best sourvior, bookstores or newstands that relates to what makes up the city for what it is known for.
Any help you could give me would be great.

Chicago is a dream for architecture enthusiasts, and there are several bookstores and shops where you can find books, prints, and souvenirs celebrating the city’s architectural heritage. Since you’ll be in the Theater District and only have a day, it’s best to focus on spots that are walkable or a short transit ride away.
Here are some top recommendations:
- Chicago Architecture Center Bookstore: Located near the Chicago Riverwalk, this bookstore is part of the Chicago Architecture Center (CAC). You’ll find a huge selection of books on Chicago’s buildings, urban planning, architects, and city history, as well as maps, prints, and architectural souvenirs. It’s ideal for picking up unique gifts or mementos.
- CityLit Books: A short distance from the Loop, this independent bookstore often carries titles on local architecture, design, and urban studies. Staff can usually point you to rare or out-of-print architecture books.
- Unabridged Bookstore (Lakeview or Lincoln Square locations): While not downtown, if you happen to have a cab or ride, they have strong architecture and design sections.
- Water Tower Place Bookstores: If you prefer a larger retail setting, some chains like Barnes & Noble here carry an extensive selection of architecture and city history books, often including guides to Chicago architecture tours.
Additional tips:
- Pick up architectural walking tour maps at the CAC; they often include recommended reading lists and highlight must-see buildings.
- Check for limited-edition prints or posters of Chicago skyscrapers and historic buildings—perfect souvenirs.
- If you have time, the CAC itself is worth visiting for exhibitions and guided tours focusing on architecture, all just steps from your Theater District location.
With just one day, focusing on the Chicago Architecture Center Bookstore and grabbing a walking tour map or print will give you a rich architectural experience and a great souvenir of the city’s famous skyline and design legacy.
