Restaurant reservations needed in October?

We'll be travelling with another couple to Bar Harbor October 16-23. Hotel reservation is done (staying at the Ivy Manor Inn), but I'm wondering about the need for restaurant reservations. One of our group is a very committed vegetarian, so we can't count on every place working for us. Would you recommend making reservations, especially for dinner?

Visiting Bar Harbor in mid-October is a wonderful time as the fall foliage is often at its peak and the summer crowds have started to taper off. However, it is still a popular tourist season, and many restaurants remain busy through Columbus Day weekend and beyond.

Restaurant Reservations:

  • For dinner, it is generally a good idea to make reservations, especially if you want to dine at popular spots or restaurants that are known for their vegetarian-friendly options. While some casual eateries may accept walk-ins, having a reservation ensures you won’t have to wait during peak dining hours (typically 5:30–8:00 PM).
  • For lunch, reservations are usually less critical unless you are targeting a very popular café or a restaurant with limited seating.
  • Vegetarian considerations make planning ahead even more important. Many seafood-focused establishments may have limited vegetarian options, so calling ahead allows you to confirm the menu can accommodate your group.

Popular Vegetarian-Friendly and Notable Restaurants in Bar Harbor:

  • Thrive Juice Bar & Kitchen – Offers a variety of plant-based and vegetarian dishes for breakfast or lunch.
  • Havana – Upscale dining with vegetarian options; reservations recommended.
  • Galyn’s – Classic Bar Harbor dining with several vegetarian choices; reservations suggested for dinner.
  • McKay’s Public House – Casual American fare with some vegetarian options; may be easier to get in without a reservation.
  • Jordan Pond House – Famous for lunch and popovers, offers vegetarian-friendly menu items; reservations or early arrival recommended during busy times.

In summary, while mid-October may be less hectic than peak summer, making dinner reservations is advisable, especially if you want to secure a table at popular spots and accommodate dietary preferences. For lunch, it’s less critical but still helpful for planning, particularly at well-known or scenic locations.
