Aloha! It's great to hear that you're planning a return visit to the Big Island. Since you’re already renting a car, you’ll have the flexibility to explore various areas, but having a swimmable beach right at your hotel can certainly enhance your experience. Here are some hotel recommendations for your 5-day stay, keeping in mind the swimmable beach and the overall quality of your stay:

1. Hilton Waikoloa Village

The Hilton Waikoloa Village is a fantastic option and offers a large resort-style experience with something for everyone. The resort is situated along the Kohala Coast and has multiple swimming pools, a beautiful lagoon, and a swimmable beach (Anaeho’omalu Bay). It also has a variety of dining options, a spa, and tons of activities such as dolphin encounters and boat rides on the lagoon. This could be a great choice if you enjoy a more expansive resort with plenty of amenities.

2. Four Seasons Resort Hualalai

If you're looking for a luxurious, five-star experience, the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai is a top contender. The property is known for its stunning beaches, excellent service, and swimmable waters. The beach here, Hualalai Beach, offers great snorkeling, and there are plenty of calm lagoons perfect for a swim. The resort’s pools are also a highlight, offering both relaxation and fun for families or couples. It’s a bit on the pricier side, but it could be worth it if you're looking for a high-end experience.

3. Mauna Kea Beach Hotel

Located in the beautiful Kauna’oa Bay, Mauna Kea Beach Hotel is another great option with direct access to a stunning, swimmable beach. This property has a more classic, less commercial feel compared to large resorts, with a laid-back atmosphere and excellent beach and oceanfront access. The hotel is perfect for those who enjoy a peaceful, natural setting with a top-tier beach experience.

4. Sheraton Kona Resort & Spa at Keauhou Bay

If you’re looking for something in the Kona area, the Sheraton Kona Resort & Spa is a solid option. It’s located at Keauhou Bay, which is a great spot for both sightseeing and relaxation. The resort has an oceanfront location, with plenty of pool space and direct access to the ocean for swimming or snorkeling. It’s less expansive than the Hilton or Four Seasons, but it’s a good mid-range option with a nice beach setting and family-friendly atmosphere.

5. The Westin Hapuna Beach Resort

The Westin Hapuna Beach Resort, located on the Kohala Coast, is another excellent choice for its location right on the beach. Hapuna Beach is one of the most beautiful and swimmable beaches on the island, known for its soft white sand and calm waters. This resort offers a mix of relaxation, great dining options, and a prime location for beach lovers. If you prefer a quieter resort with fewer crowds compared to the bigger resorts, this might be a good pick for you.

6. Fairmont Orchid

Located on the beautiful Kohala Coast, the Fairmont Orchid is another great resort with easy access to the beach. While the beach isn’t as expansive as some of the other options, it’s calm and great for swimming. The hotel offers a peaceful atmosphere, beautiful grounds, excellent dining, and a fantastic spa. It’s a wonderful choice if you’re looking for a more serene and intimate resort experience.

7. Kona Coast Resort

If you’re looking for more of a condo-style experience, Kona Coast Resort is a great option. It’s not directly on a beach, but it offers spacious accommodations with kitchen facilities, making it ideal for longer stays. You can easily drive to nearby beaches, such as Kahaluu Beach, known for its snorkeling and calm waters. Kona Coast Resort is a good option for those who want a more homey experience with access to local activities.

Other Considerations:

  • For a luxurious experience with beach access, consider Four Seasons or Mauna Kea Beach Hotel.
  • If you want a large resort with a variety of amenities, the Hilton Waikoloa Village is a great choice.
  • If you're looking for a quieter stay with a great beach, the Westin Hapuna or Fairmont Orchid are excellent options.
  • For a condo-style stay with kitchen amenities, Kona Coast Resort offers more flexibility.

All of these options are in great locations with easy access to various activities, great beaches, and beautiful surroundings. Given that you're already renting a car, you'll be able to easily explore the island from any of these hotels. Enjoy your trip to the Big Island!
